D-18 THE RECORD arts onrnTAizirr THURSDAY, JULY 11, 1991 Country stars shine in world of jingles carry a recorder with me in the car. To me, a lot of the jingles you hear on radio and TV come across kind of plastic. We try to go for the heart and souL We try to make our songs believable." To achieve this goal Williams needs the right singer. "Take T. Graham Brown," he says.

"His voice sounds like a taco. It's got the rough edge. And for most of the beer commercials, you need men with manly voices. A lot of it is according to the image they project" New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are more established centers for jingle houses. But Williams says Nashville is an advantage for his company.

"First of all, the talent pool here is second to none for musicians and singers and studios." he says. "Another thing is our central location. We get a real cross-section of clients from the whole country. We had fight the country stereotype for years. But it's not that bad anymore.

People are sophisticated enough to know that Nashville is Music City USA. It's not just country." try music is filling that void. It's the music people identify with." Williams started as a member of Nashville's songwriting community, writing the No. 1 hit "Dont You Know How Much I Love You" for Ronnie Milsap and the dance hit "Sexual Power" for the Pointer Sisters. After writing spots for Busch beer, Kraft, McDonald's, Exxon, and others, he started his own company in 1984 with financial backing from Milsap.

Williams later bought Milsap's share of the business. Williams has little time for writing songs anymore, that is, except for the 30- and 60-second variety. But if he had written No. 1 hits for all the top stars, his impact on the American consciousness could not have been much greater. Who's never heard his "Red Lobster For the Seafood Lover in You" jingle or "Reach for Sprite" campaign? "I kind of let my subconscious do all the work," Williams says.

"I've written songs since the mid-Sixties. It's just kind of what I do. A lot of times, I get an idea in the car driving. They all have made tens of thousands of dollars singing for Dan Williams. Williams runs one of the hottest advertising jingle houses in America, claiming two Clio among his awards.

Along with partners Mike Stewart and Tom Smith, he has connected Musk City with Madison Avenue with growing success for the past seven years. From its state-of-the-art Nashville offices, Dan Williams Music churns out 150 radio and television ads a year, working day and night to write, produce, and engineer each spot Jones, Jackson, Tritt, and Pirates of the Mississippi sing for Budweiser, the Gatlini for Amoco; T. 'Tor radio, they can make $30,000 or $40,000 for three hours work in the studio.

When they get into six figures, they usually have to spend a day doing a TV video. "It's also great exposure. In the case of Taco Bell with T. Graham Brown, he told me personally that it helped his career. It brought him out into the forefront Fans were requesting the Taco Bell song at his concerts and they were holding f1 DIRECTORY Fans were requesting the Taco Bell song at T.

The Kentucky Headhunters refused to do a spot for Miller Lite because they thought touting beer would hurt their image. But usually, all Williams has to do to sign an artist is ask. Williams' company does not deal exclusively with country music.

Dobie Gray sang the reggae "Mama's Got the Magic in Clorbx II," which Williams wrote. But because of the growing popularity of country music, Williams is asking more and more country singers to hawk products these days. "Country acts are much more universally acceptable now," Williams says. "I think they are becoming mainstream really. There's a huge void in music right now.

If you listen to Top 40, eight out of 10 songs will be rap. But there's a large segment of the population that doesnt live in urban ones. They're left out in the cold.
