Chbistmas will sqon be here, and then tin whistles, fire crickers and horse fiddles will waft their gentle notes on the calm Drecr.es of beaven; and while old people will go about with their fingers buried in their ears, the riing generation will be grinning themselves hoarse with jy. And such is life. Tub Centennial Exposition is to commence Msy 10, and to last until November 10, six months. The main' buildings In process of erection aia five In number, and will occupy a floor space of fifty acres, and the whole space devoted to Centennial purposes amounts to four hundred and fifty acres of the most beautiful portion of Fair-mount Park, The Hum am IIaib. How many persons abuse this delicate and beautiful ornament, by burning it with alcoholic reaihe and plas tering it with grease, which has no affinity for the skin, and is not absorbed.

Cabbisoton Shbkuan. oclS Tns large display advertisement of Howe's Greut European Circus and Menagerie will be found in this paper.

It should be borne in miud that this is the first European establishment of the kind that has ever ventured to Austin, and if we can believe tbe reports that have come la advance of the tents, this will be the finest circus and largest display of wild animals ever exhibited in this city. The exhibition will take place on Christmas day. Galbn and Hippocrates gained Immortal fame as physicians. Their names will live forever, but the remedies which they used are neither discarded nor forgotten. From their time to the present day new remedies nd so-called specillcs have been offered to the public, have been tried and found wanting, but now the untiring efforts of our physicians seem crowned with success in the production of tbe celebrate Home Stomach Bitters.

Whenever they hsve been tried, they have invariably produced a beneficial effect on all diseases of the bowels and liver. Tna advertisement or Mr. Walter Tips, the Avenne hardware and agricultural implement merchant, will be found in this paper. Mr. Tip, keeps a full line of bard-ware, and a stock so large that it is next to impossible to call for any article in the line that he cannot produce.

IIJ also deals in material of all kinds for vehicles, such as hubs, spokes, and as for agricultural lmplemeata, he can suit all who may favor him with call, for he keeps the very best. 'Farmers needing new. plows or anything used on a farm should give Mr. Tips a call. A story is afloat about the residents of a certain portion of tbe city being thrown into a state of great excitement about eleven o'clock on Monday night by the screams of an unknown girl.

The scene occurred at the door of a boarding school establishment, and is not fully understood. Unknown parties brought the girl to the spot in hark, and her frantic efforts to escape going into, the building was what aroused the ueigubors. The' parties in the carriage finally took her away, without explanation, and tbe circumstance is causing considerable talk. Pooi-K 11 cut, of Baltimore, whose reputation as founders and machinist have become national within th past twenty-fire years, appears elsewhere in our columns in an advertisement of their well-known and highly regarded as. Ltffol Turbin Water Wheel, as well as in enumeration of various other lines of their manufacture.

We invite, for this firm, the favorable consideration of those of our readers who may be in need of anything in their line; their machinery, wherever ned, best speaking for itself as regards quality, durability aud capacity for the work designed. Tbe gates are made to close by a chain, aud a weight after one pome through, but the cattle either hook thm open and crowd through or walk over the steps, and once inside they make, fearful havoc on the jonng trees and tender shrubs and fiawers.

Citiiens all over the city are preyed upon in the aame way the hundreds of loose cattle that roam at will. This thing of allowing stock to ran at large in tbe city should ka stopped, and an ordinance, to that effect would meet the general approval ef our cititena. Cvr Tta Out It mat Sate Yocb Lit. Thixgs look lively about the new court house. In addition to the number of people etnp'oyed upon the work, large numbers of citiiens occasionally stop to see the large stones swung into their places in tbe deep foundation. As one looks upon the new court house, just commenced, and the jail, nearly completed, which are to cost about one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, he forced to remember that all this labor and expanse is made necessary by crime, and that nine-tenths of tlutt crime is caused by whisky. Whisky selhcg and whUky drinking ahould be checked up by exorbitant license taxes and severe restrictions and penalties. Ah Old Citizen Gome.

We are called upon this morning to announce tbe death by paralysis of onother of Austin's oldest citizens, Mr. William Bauer. He died at bis residence at 5 o'clock last evening in the seventy-fourth year of his age, after an illness of only a few hours, having been perfectly well and abvut the streets with friends the evening before. Mr. Sauer came to this city iu 1839, and with others of the early pioneers, few of whom are now alive, battled for Austin in her perilous eaily days.

He waa a man of genial heart and good impulses, and many are tbey who will miss him fiom the sidewalks be haa so long been accustomed to tread with steady pace, and with his stick and bis dogs and jovial salutations for all. Mat Clrnuam, the colored man made somewhat notorious for having been tried two or three times, and finally acquitted, we believe, of killing the deputy sheriff of Hays county, made things a Utile lively for the police Sunday last. Some one had made a complaint against bim for disturbing the peace, and he was arrested and taken to the mayor's office, where he was put under bond, and ordered to the lockup till bondsmen could be obtained. This aroused Mat's temper, and he swore he could not be searched or taken to the calaboose, and while preparations were going on to take bim by force, he rushed to the rear of the room, jumped out tbe window, and struck a two-forty pace for tbe outskirts of the city, the police following in hot haste. Mat was finally brought back, and with a bullet in his body, but who shot him we art not informed.

He is now in the lockup, and receiving tbe attention of Dr. Stalnaker. A Health-ProaaoUaa; otlaaulant. Physicians, who certainly ought to be the best judges of such matters, declare that wholesome stimulation is not only desirable, but essential in many instances. When the temporary good effect of a sound stimulant is confirmed and rendered permanent, as iu tbe case of Hostettbr's Stomach Bitters, by tbe action of tonic and alterative principles combined with it, it becomes infinitely more efficacious as a renovant of physical energy and a corrective of those conditions of the body which invite disease.

Tbe bitters have received the emphatic sanction of physicians who have observed the effect of that popular stimulative cordial as a remedy for weakness, nervousness, dyspepsia, constipation, inactivity of the liver, malarious fevers and many other disorders. Its basis is sound old rye, the purest liquor known to commerce, and Itself possessing tonic properties of no mean order. Self-evident. If two cans are of the same size and both are full it is self-evident that one contains as much by measure as the other, although one being filled with heavy substances may weigh many ounces more t'tan the other Now, as Dr. Price's Cream Baking Powder is put in cans as large, and hold as much by measure as other kinds, a ad as baking powder is used by measure (teaspoonf uls) and not by weight, if all were of the same strength, one would go as far as the other, but as Dr.

Price's is as effective, by using two teaspoonfuls as most kinds are with three, then it is self-evident that there is one-third saved in using his powder. Houst-wives will find that aside from its excellence and healthfulnesa that two cans of Dr. Price's is equal to three cans the same size of the weighty kinds. A trial will prove this, and also that Dr. Price's True Flavoring Extracts are the most natural and delicate flavors made.

Editors ought not to have fights. It is ugly, and the example is bad, and the prominence of tbe distinguished individuals makes a heap of idle talk, and the profession is injured, and people say crooked queer things about it, and laugh at the folly of those who talk ao wisely every morning and act foolishly enough to get their heads cracked. It is bad, and wicked, and funny to put a head on a gray old rat of an editor, and yet the city engineer, who always totes a "level," and muat have a level head, put ahead on our ancient neighbor of the "organ'' yesterday, and while he was discharging the pleasing duty, a young man almost "leveled" the city's mathematical measurer with a plank. The fight waxed hot between tbe three fierce combatants in the editorial sanctum. Chairs and old newspapers flew around promiscuously as if spirit rapper and Cady Stanton were on a bender as tbe fisticuff ers were not.

Tbty fought it out soberly and quit quietly, and nobody was much hurt, though we are told that the venerable "organist's" left eye was knocked around into the place where the right one used to be, and the pretty ruffled shirt he wore when tryiug to get the printing job from the Rutabagas bis 8unday shirt was mightily torn but that waa four months ago, and it wasn't hard to tear. But all the parties to the little unpleasantness fought nobly, and whole business will be settled this morning before the recorder. Let everybody come up and witness the end of the unhappy business. Tli SJanatf fMnaUiii, The Travis County Democratic Conven tion, called to make local nominations and to elect delegates to tbe State Convention, met in the Representative hall yesterday at o'clock, and proceeded to business. The delegate numbered about on hundred, and they were men of good appearance.

Considerable time, as is usual oa such occasion, waa consumed ia offering resolutions, making motion and in discussion, but after Ui majority rule waa adopted, things moved oil a little more lively, and the nomination were made with little hinderance. H. Tulk. THAT RATIFICATION. A Gran Failure Cold aa Charity. After three weeks of flaming advertisements at the head of the editorial columns of the fossilized "organ," that "A Grard Ratification Meeting" would be held in the city of Austin, in the halls of the Capitol, at 2 o'clock f.

on the fifteenth day of December, to give tbe new Constitution a grand movement, the eventful day and hour came. A long list of speakers, aspirants for different positions, had been announced, and it had been said in these same columos that such a glorious day for Austin had never been contemplated. Herzog's magnificent brass band, at a few minutes to 3 o'clock took position on the open space in front of the Capitol and commenced to discourse sweet music. The speakers assembled in the halls. They were Governor Coke, Col.

Flournoy, Major West, Mayor Wheeler, and the man that blows wind through that same "organ," tbe last named being master of ceremonies. Tbe band played and continued to play until three o'clock, when, tbe audience not yet having reached a dozen persons, the master of cer emonies adjourned it to meet again in front of the Avenue Hotel at 6 :30 p. m. With out laying any stress upon the disappoint ment and chagrin of the speakers we wiU pass ou to the evening hour. Bills were circulated upon the streets stating that the grand ratification would be held at the above named place.

The band was there too, and after four or five grand national airs were played, Mayor Wheeler opened the meeting. The man of the "organ" then stepped forward and read a series of resolutions endorsing the Constitution. We for got to mention that there were at this time some fifty persons present, and we must re mind our readers that our intention is to practice no joke when it is stated that there was a refusal to adopt these resolutions by forty to three votes. Governor Coke was the first speaker, and we desire to create no alarm by stating that he absolutely swal lowed the immense instrument, and it was done with but little apparent damage to his person. Col.

Flournoy followed with even greater dext-rity. We cannot close this notice without mak ing mention of the audience. At its great est number, by actual count, there were not more than one hundred persons on the street, and probably twenty-five on the hotel verandah around the speakers. It was the coldest gathering ever seen, and if com posed of Democrats we are mortified to state that the party has gone over to Africa, for most of those on the streets were negroes. It was sad to witness these two miserable attempts at ratification.

They were chill ing in their influences, though the night was one as balmy and delightful as ever spread itself over this fair city. Texaa Veteran Association. Austin, December 22, 1875. This organization was established three years since. It is composed of the surviving soldiers of 1836, the heroes of San Ja cinto, and of other bloody fields of the Texas Revolution.

It is made up of the grey headed men who were tbe pioneers in the settlement of Texas, and whose brave hearts and sturdy arms inaugurated the prosperous career of the Lone Star State. The association has heretofore held the annual sessions at the city of Houston, which has generously extended its kind invitation to do so. At the last annual meeting it was proposed that the association bold its next anniversary at Austin, but this was ob jected to unless our city extend to them its invitation. Will not our city council at once invite them to hold their next anniversary at Austin, on tbe twenty-first of April, 1876. Our citizens will all heartily endorse this merited hospitality to the noble old guard who are rapidly passing away.

A. VITIZKH. Vice. Austin, December 20, 1875. Editor Democratic Statesman The atten tion of tbe public is called to the following article, which may be placed uuier the head of vice: The Austin Statesman ssys the Germans are a unit against tbe new Constitution.

that sotifarihall Herald. There is not one word of truth in it. The Rutabaga Statesman forms its opinions from a filthy German sheet published in Austin, by a no better than an escaped convict, a chronic liar and vagabond in the estimation of the intelligent and respectable portion of tbe American people. Under the false pretext of Democracy the editor is a vile Radical, wbo has levied blackmail on candidates and fraudulently obtained public work. Austin Gazette, Dee.

19." The silly and reckless editor of the Oa-telle msy be assured that thia "filthy German sheet," aa be styles it in his usual indecent language, the Texat Stoat Bulletin, says the truth in stating that the Germane in this State will vote solid and in toto against this botch of a Constitution. If his ignorance would allow it, be soon could see and learn that all the German papers in this State sre writing and working again. it; and he may learn at the aame time that aa editor whose main stock appear to be that of throwing dirt at other and filling bis paper with filthy columns simply declares his character, and will never command tbe respect and esteem of the better class of our people.
