mmm urn? nikmm I JIMIAV IS rr 'A' 1 Jamooway founder boosts fund for children ByKaetSaks Correspondent The Valerie Fund has a Mend in Herbert Fisher, founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of the Jamesway Corp. The fund, which supports six centers throughout New Jersey for the treatment of children with cancer and blood disorders, honored Fisher at its first dinner-dance last fall Fisher, who lives in Oradell, was cited for his "personal commitment to the work of the Valerie Fund" and "his corporate leadership in inspiring volunteer-ism among Jamesway employees." Although business is taking up more of his time this year, Fisher said he expects to continue his support of the fund in 1992. Ed and Sue Goldstein of Warren established the fund in 1976 in memory of their daughter, Valerie, who died at age 9 of bone cancer. Summer camps also are among the programs it sponsors. Fisher, who began his career packing merchandise at a salary of $12 a week, opened the first Jamesway store in Jamestown, N.Y., in 1960.

"I needed 10 years to get myself organized as a person, before devoting myself to charitable works," Fisher said. Those were the years following his service as a sergeant in the Army Air Force during World WarH. His hands-on management style has carried over into Fisher's charitable work. "I visited the Valerie Fund's children's center at Overlook Hospital recently saw firsthand children suffering from leukemia and Hodgkin's disease and lymphoma," Fisher said. He spent time visiting the children and their families and arranged for Jamesway to supply toys, sports equipment, clothing, and snacks for the children and to sponsor benefits for the Valerie Fund.

Fisher said he had heard of the Valerie Fund from a former business associate involved with the fund. This year, Fisher is focusing on his work as national vice president BERGEN COUHTY The Jewish Community Center on the Palisades and the YM-YWHA of Bergen County will be hosts for Israel Independence Day celebrations. A memorial ceremony, folk dancing, and a performance by Israeli singer NomJ Shemer are planned at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the JCC, 411 Clinton Tenafly. For tickets, at $10 for adults and $5 for children and senior citizens, cal 569-7900.

A ceremony at 4:15 p.m., dinner at 5:30 p.m., and show at 6:30 pjn. will be held April 18 at the 605 Pascack Road, Washington Township. Tickets for members are $15 for adults and $10 for children. For non-members, the cost is $18 for adults and $12 for children. Admission for the show only is $7 for members and $10 for others.

Bergen County chapter of the Bran-dels University National Women's Committee plans a day trip to the Pearl Buck estate In Lahaska, Pa. The bus will leave at 8:45 a.m. April 25 from Riverside Square man in Hackensack.
