B-2 THE RECORD SPORTS SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 1992 mm i TALK By John Brennan KEEPING UP WITH THE TIMES: Guy Laflaur spent most of his National Hockey League career with the Montreal Canadiens, but his 7-year-old son is more interested in the latest hockey trend. "He just started playing organized hockey this week, and all he wants is San Jose Sharks equipment," Bays the Hall of Famer. "But they don't have any in Quebec. It's all sold out." CHARLES BARKS AGAIN: Charles Barkley isn't exactly repentant about that skirmish in Milwaukee a few weeks ago, SUPER BOWL: With apologies to John Gotti, the Bills win. The gambling godfather doesn't have to believe it (sorry, big guy), but Redskins will be Giants copycats, dominating time possession with their running game.

John Madden may adopt the Hogs after this one. Spot the seven points and take the under; Redskins, 27-17. COLLEGE BASKETBALL! St. John's has had some cess in Carrier Dome, but Redmen are reeling. Young coming off a road loss at Villanova, should be too much for Looie's struggling team.

Lay 4V4 points. Favorites worthy of covering are Arizona (-12) over Pittsburgh and Connecticut (-12V4) over Boston College. Underdogs who should bark are Providence (1) against Villanova, Arkansas (2V4) against Kentucky, Stan- ford (6) against UCLA, Virginia (11) against North Carolina, -and North Carolina State (12) against Florida State. PRO BASKETBALL: The Nets finally run into a team playing well the 76ers. Couple that with Philly's advantage of playing at home and the Nets are in trouble.

Give six points. The Knicks may not have much gas left in their tank after playing the go-go Warriors Friday night. Even so, here's a shaky nod against the homestanding Clippers. Grab 4V4 points. Favorites who should cover are Suns (-4V4) over Bullets and Nuggets (-1) over Timberwolves.

Underdogs worth consideration are Hornets (1V4) against Pacers and Rockets (12) against Bulls. aHf-" II. I us Willi I when he allegedly hit a fan who had been heckling him in a bar after a game. The Philadelphia 76ers forward was interviewed by Marv Albert on the Madison Square Garden Network following Wednesday's Knicks-76ers game. When Albert asked if the controversial All-Star regretted anything he'd done recently, Barkley replied: "Yeah, the guy in Milwaukee, I didn't hit him more than one time.

That's the only thing I regret. Just because we're in the limelight, we shouldn't have to take a lot of crap off people. ONE-LINERS: Mahwah is on the "What's Hot" list in the February issue of Tennis magazine, with Flushing Meadow its "What's Not" counterpart. The newly independent republic of Croatia has been accepted as a provisional member nation of the International Tennis Federation. That will enable Top 20 players Goran Ivaneaevlc and Goran Prplc to play in the Summer Olym- pics at Barcelona. Florida State sophomore Charlie Ward, who might start at quarterback for the Seminoles next season, is averaging 7.8 points and 3.3 steals a game as a guard on the basketball team.

FALLING FORTUNES: Adam Keefe, the top basketball nlmm firtw O.A4-l..vai1rA4 CranfrwI nmnt VtnnrrAA tiimninff loot Redskins' Mark Schlereth had and now works with grammar Washington Redskins guard Mark Schlereth, the first Alaskan to play in the National Football League, was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time this season. What was It like growing up In Alaska? There's not a whole lot of Alaska to see. I mean, it's very beautiful. You've got a couple of cities, and you've got mountains and glaciers and the rest of it is frozen, barren wasteland. Tundra.

I've seen pretty much most of it. Why did you select the University of Idaho over Hawaii, which also offered you a scholarship? The weather was too nice in Hawaii for me to go there. I'm used to crummy weather, changing seasons. How Important la the "Hogs" reputation to the success of the Redskins offensive line? It's a camaraderie factor. We get respect for the name, and we work hard to stay together.

There's a natural bond. After I played well my first year, I became an official Hog. There was no ceremony. I guess we did go out one night and get a little bit "indoctrinated," but it's really an unspoken thing. You didn't realize as a spring, something Cardinal coach at DePaul 22 SI.

I remember telling the teacher I didn't want to get up and read, but he insisted. I mumbled a few words because I couldn't make things out, and the teacher told me to quit reading.

He told me to go sit down, that I was stupid. So, I put my head down, told myself that I was stupid, and sat down. My problem was that I couldn't focus on lines of words. I could pick out individual words, but the lines mixed together and nothing made any sense. It all became a jumbled-up mess, and I would get frustrated when I tried to read.

Growing up and basically being a non-reader, kids can be very cruel. How did you get through four years at Idaho? I could read; it's just that I was slow. I took the courses in which teachers said 85 percent of the grade would be on notes and 15 percent would be from the book. I knew that if I aced the notes part of it, I was going to get at least a B. I graduated with just under a 3.0 average, a 2.8 or 2.9.

He guided the Bulldogs to 192 wins in 10 seasons his last was 1986-87 but never defeated the Blue Tide in the postseason. Although Rutherford was 64-15 during Cavo's last three seasons, Harrison twice eliminated the Bulldogs in the Group 2, Section 1 playoffs. "Not one sectional title all because of Harrison," Cavo says. "That's hard to put behind you." Cavo, 38, put coaching behind him when an expanding family forced him to relocate from Hawthorne to Mount Arlington. He has two daughters Jennifer, 11, and Regina, 8 and a son, Andrew, 7.
