MAY 24, 1992 DASEDALL THE SUNDAY RECORD 8-9 Giants just may be for real TeePs career taking turn toward coaching i 1 -1 STEVE ADAMEK prise. When he shed tears over an early July loss to the Mets last season, it was obvious he couldn't handle the rigors of major league managing, even in a market as soft as Montreal. The Expos were also on a pace to barely draw more than 1 million fans this season, so the front office had to act as if it thought the season could be salvaged which it cannot, with the Expos' luck of talent. Runnells, however, may be the only NL manager fired this season, unless the Padres hit the skids and Greg Rlddoch, on thin ice last year, goes. The Cubs will live with Jim Lefebvre, having fired two managers last year.

i By Mark J. Czcrwinskl Record Staff Writer The dream remains the same for former Ridgefield Park star Garett Teel. The plot, however, has undergone some changes. Teel wants to have a career in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Hut stead of being behind the plute, he'll probably earn his keep in the dugout or on the coaching lines.

Teel was recently promoted from short-season Class A Yakima to Class A Vero Beach to replace Jon Debus as assistant coach. The Dodgers consider Teel a player-coach, but it will take a major disaster for him to get into action. "It doesn't look good, but anything ran hnnnpn TppI. 24, said. "If three or GARETT TEEL four catchers all went down at once and that's highly unlikely I'll be activated.

"I'm into coaching a little earlier than I expected, but it's what I want to do. I chart pitches, coach first, work with the catchers, and throw a lot of batting practice to the guys who want extra work." Teel was the All-America catcher on the 1988 William Paterson team that went to the Division III World Series. When it comes to coaching style, he's borrowed a few pages from longtime WPC mentor Jeff Albies of Hillsdale. "I like the way Albies used to let us go out and play," Teel said. "If you were struggling, he'd give you a suggestion.

If you liked it, you did it. That's what I'm doing now. "I think these guys see eye-to-eye with me, especially the catchers. They know they could talk, and they know ft Oh F'THE ARM they don't have to try to impress me. They come to my room sometimes and confide in me because I'm sort of a liaison between them and the manager." The next step for Teel is quite intriguing.

1 1 is long-range goal is to be a manager, and he's been talking to an Australian team about a managing job next winter. "I think it looks pretty good for me," Teel said. "Baseball's only been around Australia for about 10 years, but they say it's becoming as big as cricket or Australian Rules Football. "I'd say it's sort of like our Met League. The guys work all day and play three times a week with road trips on weekends.

I hear they're starting to pay coaches pretty well down there, so I think it will be a great opportunity." Another former William Paterson star, Bruce Dostal of Towaco, has been struggling since the Philadelphia Phillies demoted him to Class AA Reading two weeks ago. Dostal was hitting .227 with two doubles and five runs scored after 10 starts in center field. Former St. Joseph Regional standout Craig Connolly is off to a good start for the Reno Silver Sox, one of Oakland's two Class A entries in the California League. The right-hander pitched in 11 of Reno's first 38 games, posting a 2-1 record and a 2.67 earned run average.

In his first 27 innings, Connolly had a save and 30 strikeouts. A rookie who before this season never had played higher than CIuss AA, Royc Clayton, starts at shortstop. Matt Williams began the weekend hitting .229.

Everyday second baseman Robby Thompson just returned after missing 19 games. Two-thirds of each day's outfield is populated by a collection of has-been-sand never-weres. Yet, the San Francisco Giants, after sweeping three games from Pittsburgh at cold, cruel Candlestick Park last week, shared the best record in the National League with the Pirates heading into the weekend. Go figure. 1 OK, so the surprising Swift is 6-0.

And any team with Will Clark is going to be dangerous. Still, the Giants' success at this season's quarter pole is enough to make you go, hmmmm, baby. The Pirates, though, have it all figured out. In the Giants, they see a bit of themselves. "They're the type of team very closely related to the type of team we have," shortstop Jay Bell said.

"Everyone is pulling for each other. They go out and believe they can win every day." "They have speed at the top of the order, speed at the bottom of the order, and power in the middle," Pirates manager Jim Leyland said of the Giants. "If they keep pitching as well as they have been pitching, they're going to be as tough as anyone." "They catch the ball," catcher Mike LaValllere said. Manager Roger (Humm Baby) Craig, who lost Kevin Mitchell's power in the trade for Swift, Burba, and reliever Mike Jackson, has managed his team into its lofty status by committee, the bullpen, and the outfield. With Mitchell gone, Craig essentially has played only one outfielder every day, center fielder Darren Lewis, who began NATIONAL LEAGUE BATTERS Lake Kruk Daullon Morandini Grotewold Backman Hollins Duncan Batiste Dykstra Peguero Chambrln Sveum Amaro Murphy Jordan Lindeman Scarsone TOTALS PITCHERS Harlley Ritchie Schilling Williams Brantley Ashby Mulholland Cox Abbott Jones Searcy Brink Greene Chapin TOTALS AVG AB 28 SB HR RBI BB SO .409 22 2 9 1 0 1 1 0 3 .390 141 28 55 6 1 3 28 23 20 .328 116 21 38 13 2 3 29 19 29 .323 96 15 31 1 2 1 7 9 21 .300 10 1 3 0 0 0 1 1 4 .286 14 2 4 1 0 0 4 2 2 .279 140 30 39 9 1 5 26 25 25 .274 168 25 46 14 1 2 17 2 34 .244 78 7 19 3 0 1 6 4 13 .237 97 13 23 3 0 2 11 13 9 .222 9 2 2 0 0 0 0 3 3 .202 89 9 18 5 0 3 9 1 26 .185 54 7 10 2 0 0 10 4 17 .172 99 16 17 4 0 3 11 15 15 .164 61 5 10 1 0 2 7 1 13 .150 20 2 3 0 0 1 6 0 3 .150 20 2 3001 42 8 .111 9 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 3 .259 1327190 344 65 7 28 182128 287 0 0 3 2 0 0 3 5 0 4 0 0 0 5 0 0 0 0 ERA SV 1 0 0.00, 0 IP 10 17.1 fl ER HR 0 0 0 BB SO 0 0 8 9 13 33 14 14 23 16 2 12 19 39 17 28 21 38 10 9 8 4 3 2 22 23 0 1 158228 0 1 1.56 3 2 2.36 2 1 3.38 2 2 3.51 1 0 4.02 4 3 4.15 2 2 4.46 0 7 5.44 1 2 5.55 0 0 5.63 0 0 6.00 2 1 6.32 0 0 9.00 18 21 4.30 4 3 10 9 8 7 17 13 7 7 33 30 23 18 34.1 21 18.2 15 33.1 31 15.2 14 65.0 67 36.1 41 49.2 48 24.1 32 8.0 7 6.0 7 31.1 34 2.0 2 343.0 338 30 30 8 16 15 2 5 5 0 4 4 0 23 22 3 2 2 1 182 164 31 Having allowed just five walks in 60 innings heading into the weekend, Cardinals right-hander Bob Tewksbury could become the biggest control freak in.

the last 50 seasons. His average of 0.75 walks per nine innings is better than the best single-season ratio compiled by a starter during that time, 0.86 by the White Sox's LaMarr Hoyt in 1985. No other starter has averaged fewer than one walk per nine innings in the past half-century. Times keep getting tougher for the Phillies. Their starting rotation is decimated, Dale Murphy is out for four to six weeks after arthroscopic knee surgery, and last week, pitcher Andy Carter from their Class AA team in Reading, held them hitless for 523 innings in an 8-2 exhibition victory.

Before this weekend, the three players the Dodgers have started at first base Todd Benzlnger, Kal Daniels, and Eric Karros had combined for eight runs batted in. Otherwise, Craig is shuttling the likes of Kevin Bass, Mike Felder, Chris James, Willie McGee, and Cory Snyder in and out of left and right. The only one of them doing anything with the bat is McGee (.283 heading into the weekend), but he has five errors. Out of the bullpen, four pitchers saved four games in a row last week Rod Beck, Jeff Brantley, Dave Rlghettl, and Jackson. Other than Beck, who retired 26 straight batters in one stretch, no one has been spectacular.

Yet combined, they have a 2.42 earned run average. Entering the weekend, the team batting average was .252, or 19 points higher than the Mets'. With 27 homers, the Giants were tied for third in the league. Their team ERA of 3.01 led the league and their error total, 31, was sixth. Hitting, pitching, and defense.

That's about all there is. "You're not as impressed with them on paper as some other teams in the West, but they play well as a team," Pirates pitcher Bob Walk said. "We don't really care who believes we're for real or not," Clark said. "The only guys that matter are the guys in here, and we've believed in ourselves since spring training."
