HIGH SCHOOL FOOTDALL DECEMBER 8. 1991 Wayne Valley prevails in defensive stru By Ron Fox Record Staff Writer WAYNE They play a terrific brand of football in Wayne. The burden of proof was delivered Saturday when the township' two public schools met for the State Group 3, Section 1 championship, and neither team was soundly thrashed. Wayne Valley prevailed on a second-quarter touchdown, while the only score by Wayne Hills, a 63-yard pass play with 6:20 left, was erased by a motion penalty. The 7-0 victory gave Valley its third championship in four years.

The first-ever meeting between the two schools was witnessed by more than 10,000 fans. It was a game of heart and courage. Rugged fullback-linebacker Kyle Hughes of Wayne Hills injured his left hand while making a block in the first quarter, yet ha remained in the game. His opposite number, Aaron Hall, Injured his right thumb while scoring the game's only touchdown, 1:47 into the second Quarter, yet he continued to play both ways. Valley quarterback Bill Formosa missed only eight plays with a right ankle sprain suffered early in the third quarter.

Despite the intense rivalry and the huge stakes, the game was clean. "The kids were wonderful on both sides, no cheap hits," said em. Yet that was all the Hills' defense, led by Hughes and Todd Agresta, would allow. A J. Vaccar-(no's interception at his 11 stopped the other Valley drive as the Patriot prevented any long scoring plays.

"We always had poor field position and they squeezed one out," said Hills coach Chris Olsen. "Our defense did an outstanding job today, and it was a pleasure to play against their team." OlBen wasn't as reticent when his team's touchdown was nullified. It was a stunner as quarterback Brian Sek averted a heavy rush and threw down the middle to Ryan Edge for the apparent score. The flag was thrown well in ad vance of the pass, when a flanker was not set at the snap. "The kid jumped way ahead of it." said Wayne Valley coach Dave McMahon.

"I don't know how it affected our kids, because you tend to let up when a flag is thrown. I think we could have scored again if we had to. I know we could have the left side for 22 yards. Yet that drive ended on a fourth-and-7 try from the Valley 28, the Patriots' deepest penetration. Tackle Dane Chicketano batted down the pass.

Hard hiu were abundant as the Wayne Hills defense limited Valley to 144 yards while Valley's defense gave up 150 yards. The score came on a six -play, 37-yard drive following a punt. Justin Riemer caught a 19-yard pass, and Marc Fauerbach swept the right side for 10 yards to the 8. Hall carried the next three times, 5oing behind right tackle Eric ohnson for the final yard.

Riemer kicked the extra point. "We've been running a strong line all season," Johnson said. In the second quarter, needing a yard from his 45, Sek got off a pitch just as he was hit by Greg Flinn. But Paul Ricciardi and Bill Formosa stopped the play for a loss of 4.

S-i6 THE SUNDAY RECORD 7 Wallington still did itself proud GROUP 1 N' if Bergen Catholic's Joe DeFranco Fabish helps secondary come up big -V N-v" tries to break a tackle in BC's 14-0 PAROCHIAL A Saturday. Actually, Fabish's dad did announce, and managed to keep his voice neutral when his son, Mark, intercepted a pass at Bergen Catholic's 40-yard line and returned it to the St. Joseph 44 with 1:43 remaining in the first half. The pickoff set up the Crusaders' lone first-half touchdown en route to a 14-0 victory. "I was told in practice to watch for that, the outside release up the sidelines," said Fabish, who was on man-to-man coverage most of the afternoon, usually against junior wide receiver Justin Saxton.

Fabish commended the rest of Bergen Catholic's secondary -seniors Mike Bajakian, Scott Robinson, and Zeke Rodgers for VIWwM rl A win over St. Joseph in the Parochial holding St. Joseph to 57 yards passing after allowing nearly 300 yards in a too-close-for-comfort, 21-19 playoff semifinal win over Immaculata. "All the credit in the world belongs to Fabish and Bajakian for coming up with big interceptions," Bergen Catholic coach Fred Stengel said, also referring to Baja-kian's one-handed snag late in the third quarter on Bergen Catholic's four-yard line. Fabish started the season as Bergen Catholic's punt returner, a job he relishes.

He later worked his way into the offense and became Bergen Catholic's leading pass receiver (14 catches, 238 yards). "I love returning punts more than anything else," said Fabish, whose 33-yard first-quarter punt return broke a single-season school record (252 yards), pre GROUP 3 yards, was complemented by the passing of quarterback Mike Theesfeld, who completed six passes for 106 yards. The West Morris defense held Nutley to 28 yards rushing and sacked Maroon Raiders quarterback Frank DeMaio (6-of-ll for 97 yards) five times. We've done well for ourselves. But this isn't a me syndrome.

It's a we syndrome. My assistant coaches deserve a lot of credit." With the help of Bob Baksa, Dennis Hard, Greg Nicholls, and Rudy Pavlic, Wallington absorbed the loss of 12 seniors from last season's team and reached beyond what many thought was possible. "All year long people were asking if this year's team was as good as last year's team," said Panthers senior quarterback Tommy Vellis, who stepped out of former Wallington quarterback Paul Magrini's shadow to lead the Panthers to a 9-2 record. "This senior team was the heart of last year's team. Nobody thought we'd get to this game.

Vellis, with such upperclassmen as Manny Tejeda, Shawn Ivanicki, Keith Skirbe, Joe Lucosky, and Tim Hlavenka, were determined to leave their mark. Although 18 seniors will graduate from this Wallington team, shed no tears for Von Tobel. He promises that next year's rendition also will be competitive. Group 1 Palioadeo Park 20. Despite playing with a hyperextended elbow, DeFranco rushed for 34 yards on eight carries in the second half. On Bergen Catholic's 78-yard fourth-quarter touchdown drive, he made two pivotal first downs, a 9-yard run on third-and-two from BC's 31 and a 2-yard gain on third-and-one from midfield with a great second effort. "I just put my head down and hold on to the ball," said De-Franco, who became a factor when Eric Lane sat out a few plays after being shaken up midway through the second TD drive.

Some were crying, some stared in disbelief, and others were kneeling, perhaps reflecting on the season.

As they huddled around their second-year coach, Von Tobel spoke of what they had accomplished during his short tenure. "You've played 22 games and won 18 of them in a two-year span," said Von Tobel, his voice starting to crack with emotion. "You've been to two State championship games. You've won one and you've lost one. You don't ever have to hang your heads.

I'm real proud of you. You've showed a lot of class we'll be back next year." Then in a display of unity, the players got up and raised their helmets together in unison. It was a striking moment; the light blue helmets filling the gray autumn sky. But it told a story Wallington has become a football program to be reckoned with. In seven seasons prior to Von Tobel's arrival, Wallington was 14-44.

A State championship appearance, let alone a Bergen County Scholastic League Olympic Division title, was but a distant dream. Despite coming up short in the Olympic Division the past two seasons finishing second to Cress-kill and Park Ridge, respectively it's now commonplace to see Wallington in the postseason. "We're trying to build a program here, not a hit-and-miss situation," Von Tobel said. "We've got Wallington where we want to be.
