Bob Nichols, won a world title In 1978 and is preparing for a world championship to be held in 1984. The event will be staged in Duluth and Nichols is part of the planning committee. first claimed a world title in 1979 and this year in an attempt to earn another was stopped in his country's semifinals by Paal Trulsen. a member on Soerum's '79 rink. Soerum was also his country's national coach in 1981 and 1982. Rick Folk of Saskatoon broked the European and string of world titles when he won the championship in 1980. He has continued curling and lost the final of the Saskatchewan plavdowns to Kirk Ziola this year.

But Folk hasn't lost in the political arena. Hes a member of the Conservative Saskatchewan government winning a Saskatoon seat in the last election. Jurg Tanner, who has been attending university, attempted this year to qualify for the Silver Broom which he won in 1981 for Switzerland. He lost in the early rounds, though. The skip has remained ith tw curlers.

Jurg Hornisberger and Patricjk Loertzcher, who helped him win the 1977 world junior championship and his father, Franz who was part of the world championship rink. Al Hacklier, from Thunder Bay, has travelled to countries such as Switzerland and Scotland for curling competi-ton since winning last year's Silver Broom. Haekner. who works as a railway switchman, has also been seen in farm product advertisements. He'll have to surrender the Silver Broom title to another curler this year.

It will be another curler that will add his name to an impressive list. fore Canada's dominance waned for a number of years and European rinks began claiming championships. Meleschuk, who still curls competitively and was involved in the Manitoba plavdowns this year, is a city engineer in Selkirk, Man. Kjell Oscarius, the year after Mel-schuk's triumph, skipped the first European rink to a world phampionship. He brought the Silver Broom title to Sweden in 1973, claiming it in Regina.

Hell be back In Regina this year as an assistant umpire to Hay and is the chief umpire for the world womens championship in Moose Jaw. Oscarius, who lives in Stockholm, is a computer salesman and travels throughout Europe in pursuit of his occupation. Otto Danielli, who claimed the world title for Switzerland in 1975, has pursued an occupation that is a family tradition. He runs a restaurant, founded by his grandfather, in Waliisellen, a suburb of Zurich. The graduate chef has also been Germany's national coach for five years.

Bruce Roberts of Duluth. is an elementary school teacher and is still chasing world titles. He participated in the U.S. championships this year with Scott Baird, who was his third when Roberts won the Silver Broom in 1976. Ragnar Kamp won the world title in 1977 for Sweden but this year was trying to qualify for the Canadian championship out of Port Hawkesbury, N.S., which he now calls home.

After going undefeated through preliminary and playoff rounds of the Nova Scotia Tankard championship and winning the A side of that provinces draw, he lost twice to Steve Ogden who qualified for his first Brier. Memories of the tradition, excitement and display of sheer talent that is part of the world curling championship's history is reflected in the group of 17 curlers gathering for the event that will decide the next name to be added.to the honor roll of the grand old game. Silver Broom organizers have organized the ultimate curling reunion. Every world championship skip, the only exception being the late Lyall Dagg, will be in Regina.

Dagg, who was from Vancouver, will be represented by Barry Naimark, part of the 1964 winning rink. Reginas Ernie Richardson heads the list of champions. He was the first to claim the world title in 1959, then a challenge between Scotland and Canada. Richardson won the title four times in five years (1959, '60, '62, 63) which ranks as one of the great curling success stories. Success has also been Richardsons partner in the business world, most notably with Richardon's House of Fixtures, a lighting outlet.

Richardson, who spends time in Phoenix, still draws royalties from curling equipment he has endorsed. Calgarys Ron Northcott is another multiple winner with victories in 1966, '68 and 69. The list includes Scotch Cup and Silver Broom championships. The Silver Broom era began in 1968. Northcott, known as The Owl in the curling fraternity, won the three titles with different thirds each time.

Northcott. from Calgary, is an oil industry executive. He does participate in a few spiels and this year teamed up with Mike Chernoff and their respective sons. Bud Sommerville of Superior, like Northcott, has won both the Scotch Cup (1965) and the Silver Broom 1974). Hes a county clerk for Douglas County.

Chuck Hay, winner of the 1967 Scotch Cup, has been a curler who has contributed much to the game in his home country of Scotland. He has a 600-acre farm but it hasn't drawn him away from curling. He is chairman of the International Curling Federation rules committee and is the chief umpire at this years Silver Broom. He is chairman of the board for the Perth ice rink, has been a national coach, past president of Scotland's national curling association, w'as chairman of the 1975 Perth Silver Broom and has received the Order of the British Empire for his contributions in curling. Chucks sons, skip Mike and third David, were part of Scotlands world unior championship rink this year.

Hec Gervais is another Scotch Cup champion (1961). Hes involved in farming in the St. Albert, and still picks up the broom to curl. Don Duguid of Winnipeg picked up the broom and used it to claim back-to-back world titles, in 1970 and 1971. His knowledge of curling has been imparted to the public for the past ten years as a CBC color commentator.

9-2. less volunteers thanks to computers, Bill Carefoot, chairman of the Silver Broom communications committee, said. It's an information retrieval system. It adds some sophistication to it and takes away some of the repetitious, manual work, Carefoot said. The information on visitors is expected to be particularly useful in the case of lost tickets.

Instead of flipping through page after page of names and numbers to determine who owns tickets and who doesnt, with the touch of a few buttons, a list of who has tickets, where they're from and their seat number will appear on the terminal screen. The information wont just help the organizers of this Silver Broom. Its great for record purposes for next year. It will make organizing of the next Silver Broom that much easier, Carefoot said. The computer age has hit curling.

Unlike the last time the Air Canada Silver Broom was held in Regina, game, player and team statistics and information about Silver Broom visitors can be found quickly and easily via computer. And theres more information available. Terminals will be set up at four Silver Broom information booths and in the Silver Broom and Air Canada offices. Saskatchewan Telecommunications (Sask Tel) is donating part of it computer to store information and the Winnipeg group compiling statistics will be using their own system. In 1973, information had to be compiled and retrieved manually.

Because computers can now be used to do some of the work, not as many volunteers are needed.
