14 Sports The Leader-Post Regina, Saskatchewan Saturday, February 4, 1978 South Dakotan leads snowmobilers Scores Summaries Statistics Basketball Houston 1 12 Nw York HG ChicaKo 1 10 Sin Antonio 107 Denver I In Detroit 1 02 Phoenix I lit Milwaukee Itta Portland 1 12 Goklen State 92 six female drivers dropped out on the first leg. The attrition rate for the rest of the drivers was considerably higher. Only about half the 119 snowmobilers who started at Minot Friday morning reached Estevan, compared with 110 out of 170 starters in last year's race, when there was almost no snow cover on the course. The combination of dull skies, rock-hard snow drifts and fierce winds caused most of the drivers to experience at least one or two high-speed spills on the ditches and fields. According to Jack Jahnke, race secretary, visibility was reduced to about one-half mile for at least a 60-mile stretch between Minot and Kenmare, N.D.

Also, large snowdrifts situated across approach roads caused drivers to slow almost to a halt when crossing them, reducing the average rate of speed significantly from past years. "We're not looking for any records this year due to the snow conditions," Jahnke said, adding that slower times may result in fewer mechanical failures. The best time recorded so far is a full 30 minutes longer than the best 1977 time, even when snowmobiles skidded along muddy, rock-strewn course. Average speeds are down to 35 to 40 miles per hour, compared with 50 mph and higher last year. Berbos said he had one spill along the way, but had "a couple of close calls" when visibility was negligible and the hard snowdrifts appeared out of nowhere to knock the driver reeling.

Other snowmobilers, however, encountered greater difficulties because of the treacherous conditions, considered by most to be the roughest in the history of the event. Reimer, who Is in his fifth consecutive International 250, lost his brakes at the 20-mile mark of the race and was forced to decelerate well In advance of approaches, rather than brake quickly to reduce speed. Kristjanson said he had fallen or was "bucked off his machine at least 10 times because of the snowdrifts and poor visibility. Under revised rules this year, only safety repairs to headlights, taillights, windshield, brakes and mudflaps are allowed and only for a one hour period after the first leg of the race is completed. Also, repairs, other than engine work which is prohibited, must be done after the flag is dropped and the race is resumed Saturday.

Nick Berbos, 16, of Aberdeen, S. crossed the finish line just past noon, completing the 125-mile trek from Minot to Estevan in slightly less than three hours and 32 minutes. Driving an Arctic Cat, Berbos pulled in ahead of Craik's George Ackerman, on a Polaris, and Jeff Gartner of Bottineau, N.D., also on an Arctic Cat, in the stock class for non-modified machines up to 500 cubic centimetres. In the International Cross Country Snowmobile Federation (ICCSF) class, Ron Zutz, of Warren, led the pack on his John Deere with a time of three hours, 35 minutes and 19 seconds, followed closely by Kris Kristjanson of Leslie, at three hours, 35 minutes and 56 seconds.

Ron Reimer of Steinbach, a third-place-finisher in the recent Winnipeg-St. Paul race, came in behind Zutz and Kristjanson at 3:44:55. The ICCSF event is for snow ma- chines up to 340 c.c.'s and no more than 45 horsepower. Ackerman's time of 3:34:09 was good enough for top spot in the family stock (family-owned, non-modified) event, followed by Butch Boyce of Minot and Carl Stepp of Torquay. The masters event for older drivers was headed by Clarence Baker of Beause-jour, in a Moto-Ski, with a time of four hours, four minutes even.

R. A. Stevenson of Regina and Orval Swayze of Carndul'f were second and third finishers. Two of the DELTA DELEX J1 Riddell dies SASKATOON (CP) Walter T. Riddell, one of the city's best-known sports figures and newspapermen, has died at the age of 80.

Walt, as he was known, had been by turns sports editor, city editor, provincial editor, night editor and day editor with the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix until he wrote his final column in 1974. He officially retired from the newspaper in 1962 but stayed on in a part-time capacity, writing provincial news and sports columns. A golfer and curler, Riddell helped bring the Canadian men's curling championship to Saskatoon for the first time in 1946 and a few years later served as chairman for the Canadian schoolboys' curling championship in the city. A member of the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame, he was a driving force behind the Saskatchewan Golf Association's junior development program. Riddell, born in Cobourg, received a law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1919 but his love of sport exceeded his interest in law.

He did part-time sports writing and was secretary for a baseball team while studying in Winnipeg. Funeral arrangements were not completed.
