E6 THE VANCOUVER SUN. WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 1, 1999 1999 MOLSON INDY Moore is not enjoying a vintage season Maple Ridge driver goes into Sunday race with bruises after crashing in California. GARY KINGSTON VANCOUVER SUN Greg Moore was holding court Tuesday at Score-Virtual Sports World and probably wishing his high-speed crash three days earlier had been on one of the nearby virtual reality race games and not on a real race course. The Maple Ridge native was testing on the California Speedway at Fontana, Calif., on Satur-day when he and his PlayersForsythe Reynard did the concrete tap dance. "The engine broke just as I was entering turn one and hit the wall at about 210 miles an hour backwards," said Moore. "It's not a lot of fun, probably the biggest crash I've had in my career." He was, he said, feeling a little sore. He had a big bruise on his lower back, a bruise between the shoulder blades, a sore neck and a sore knee. "But other than that," he said, his eyes twinkling and his mouth curling into that familiar boyish grin. "I'm fine." If only he could say the same about his trying fourth season on the CART circuit. After opening the FedEx Championship series with a win at Homestead, Fla., and a fourth-place finish at Motegi, Japan, he has been cursed by tough luck and an underpowered and trouble-plagued Mercedes engine. Out of the points in five of the last eight races, Moore enters the Molson Indy Vancouver in sixth place in the drivers' standings, 75 points behind leader Juan Montoya. "We had a lot of bad luck this year, things going wrong, car running perfectly all day in practice and qualifying, then all of a sudden in the race something happens. You know, it's just kind of been the wrong place at the wrong time." And that's not the way he wants to come into Vancouver. After back-to-back fifth place finishes in Indy Lights in 1994 and 1995, Moore failed to finish any of his three CART races on the temporary road circuit around False Creek. So much for home course advantage.
