Mit. J. D. Spreckels leaves for Philadelphia to purchase or have built, for his company, two largo steamers to match the Mariposa and Alameda. It is not settled whether the new steamers will run to China or Central America, but the officers of the O.

S. S. Co. say that they intend to have complete Hues from San Francisco to all tho important Pacific Ocean ports. All of their magnificent vessels are under the American fiag and pay taxes here.

THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION. The regular monthly meeting of the officers and trustees of the above was held at their rooms on Thursday evening. Mailers connected Willi the new building were discussed. The building committee have decided to resume work as soon as the subscription reaches eight thousand dollars, it being now within a few hundred dollars of that amount. The subject of the fair to be held in May was also under consideration.

The question of milling and lotteries in connection therewith was discussed at some length, unauthorized statements concerning the matter having obtained circulation. The sentiment of those present was opposed to anything of the kind. On inquiry, no foundation could be found for the report in question. The fair in aid of the same institution, four years ago realized about twenty-four hundred dollars without resorting to anything of the kind, and no reason was seen. for adopting any different policy on Hie present occasion.
