E4 Till- YANOH'VI Sl'N. SAiTRHAY. IY I')')') SPORTS Expanded CFL rosters in doubt Goldie and Kurt are hockey parents, too 0 Unless CFLPA agrees with owners on length of new deal and post-season pay, players could be cut. JOANNE IRELAND EDMONTON JOURNAL EDMONTON Take it or leave it. That was pretty much the bottom line in the latest negotiating session between the CFL and its players' association.

Dan Ferrone, president of the CFLPA, will meet via conference with his player representatives Sunday and conduct a vote on the owners latest proposal. "Initially, no one was crazy about the offer they've made," said Ferrone. "We'll see what happens when they've had time to read it." The owners' last pitch was delivered the day before the final cuts. They added two players to the rosters for the first two games of the season then said that if the union accepted the terms of their deal, the rosters would remain at 39. The salary cap would also increase from $2,128 million to $2.18 million and the contract would run for three years.

If the players' association rejects the deal, two players from each team will be cut by Tuesday. "That's what we're currently discussing," said Al Ford, general manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and a member of the player relations committee. "We don't want to cut them. "We send them home we're not bringing them back." The CFLPA wants the rosters to increase but there are now two key issues to be addressed. The first is the length of the contract.

The players don't want to be locked into a long-term deal unless they have assurances that the salary cap will increase if revenues go up. They countered with a two-year deal plus an option. The other issue is post-season remuneration. Three years ago, when the last deal was brokered, the players agreed to do their part to assist the financially strapped league. One of the concessions was a reduction in the Grey Cup bonuses, which dropped from $12,000 to $10,000 for the BAD DAY: Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Danny McManus suffers through six-interception night Friday in a 22-16 CFL loss to the Montreal Alouettes, now 2-0, at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton.

Greg Douglas Actor pairing impresses in 8-Rinks debut; Paterson brothers win a Bure stick and raffle it for charity. SCENE HEARD: Three stories, not related, that indicate society may not yet have gone to hell in a handbasket. Story number one: Word rocketed through 8-Rinks in Burnaby the other night that Goldie Hawn and husband Kurt Russell were in the house watching one of their sons playing for an Anaheim team at an invitational hockey tournament. Neither movie star tried to hide from the crowd. In fact, both were happily signing autographs and chatting up a storm.

It was almost as if they enjoyed mingling as much as the starry-eyed fans enjoyed getting up close and personal. Story number two: The Paterson brothers Doug and Ron won a Pavel Bure autographed stick as part of their prize package at the Kathy Taylor Charity Golf Classic at Golden Eagles in Pitt Meadows. They immediately turned it back for an impromptu raffle that raised an unexpected $500 from the Canadian Airlines workers and friends of Kathy, who died much too young of cancer. Story number three: A member of Capilano Golf Club was an eyewitness to a little boy approaching John Daly for an autograph at the Skins Game in Montreal. When the youngster told Daly he was 12 years old that very day, Daly asked if his parents gave him golf clubs for his birthday.

When the boy said no, Daly took him by the hand to the pro shop and bought him a full set of Calloways. HERE THERE: Mondays and Tuesdays are usually dark at Hastings Park Racecourse, but not this past week. Flastings Park was transformed into Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and several scenes from the movie Beautiful Joe were shot starring Sharon Stone and Billy Connolly. SHORT HOPS: You think Pat Quinn isn't on a roll? He and his wife Sandra returned from a cruise on the French Riviera as guests of Emily Griffiths while Toronto Maple Leafs president Ken Dryden waited impatiently to officially add the title of general manager to Quinn's head coaching portfolio. Following the Leafs' dynamic run to the Eastern Conference Stanley Cup final last season, Quinn was named runner-up to Ottawa's Jacques Martin as NHL coach-of-the-year.

Quinn has the Toronto media munching out of the palm of his hand, and nobody is more aware of it than Dry-den. The Leafs prez is extremely unpopular with most of the pencil-pushers from print, radio and television. Naming Quinn as GM gets Dryden off the hook on a day-to-day basis Another coach from a different era, Ernie (Punch) McLean, will be the target of a roast at the Burnaby Winter club next Saturday night. "Why would we offer to do that?" said Ferrone. "Because they're saying they don't have the money. "It's important we have this to get the players to accept a deal. We thought we had the cure. But they're saying they'll be stuck with it in the third year." That was pretty much what Ford said Thursday, the day after the league and union last met.

The plan then is to disperse the cash to all six of the playoff teams. The Grey Cup winners would still get $10,000 but the first-round playoff cheque would jump from $1,900 to $2,900. The players also offered to help pick up some of the cost. "The players can't really understand why they would turn that down," said Ferrone. "We're paying for our own playoff benefits." The teams pay the medical plan premiums, a total of about $650,000 a season, but three years ago, the association took turning service, so he never let Merkiein get into the match," said Cayer.
