41 "FRIDAY, MARCH 16. 1990 HIGH SCHOOL COYS DASKETDALLCOLLEGH THE RECORD 0-7 Schafenberg still in hunt for gold RIC FRANCISTHE RECORD Terrance Rattley of McCorristin (23) comes down with a rebound while falling to the floor in semifinal loss to St. Anthony. St. Anthony refuses to surrender By Ron Fox Record Staff Writer The Bogota basketball team the State Group 1 champion might have received its toughest battle for recognition in its own gym had three wrestlers not left town.

Rich Schafenberg, a Bogota resident, attends Paramus Catholic and has earned a berth in the State wrestling tournament's quarterfinal round, which resumes today at 6 p.m. Evan LaManna lives in town but attends Elmwood Park High School, where his father is vice principal LaManna is in the first round of wrestlebacks and is in the running for a bronze medal with Rafael Vasquez, who stayed at home at Bogota High School Brian Bagheri moved north from Bogota and won a District 1 championship before being eliminated late at the regional level. "That would have been some team," says Schafenberg, who has had trouble qualifying for activity throughout his career because of knee problems. "I've popped it all four years," says the 171-pound senior. "But last year, it happened in football, so I got in a whole season of wrestling and went 22-4.

This year, I skipped football so I'd make sure I could wrestle, and on the third day of practice, it popped again." Missing the Bergen County tournament in December was a downer for Schafenberg, but he is 20-2 and scored 5-1 and 12-6 decisions Wednesday in the opening rounds of the State tournament, coming back from virtual out-bracket status. Schafenberg was third in Region 1 and did not qualify for a bye. His 12-6 victory was over Region 3 champion John Fox of Par-sippany-Troy Hills in the prequar-terfinals. From Northeast New Jersey Regions 1 and 2 19 wrestlers remain eligible for gold medals. Fourteen are regional champions: Mike DeLuca of Lyndhurst and Jason Barch of Fair Lawn at 112 pounds, Nelson Cruz of Fort Lee at 125, Joe Santaiti of Fair Lawn at 130, Pete Zanchelli of Ramapo at 135, Scott Kemp of Fair Lawn and Mike Kwapniewski of Caldwell at 140, Brian Bonomo of Lodi at 145, Dan Hywel of Belleville at 152, Paul Szep of Bloomfield at 160, Chuck Danys of Garfield and Mike Anderson of North Bergen at 171, Mike Bis- choff of Hasbrouck Heights at 189, and Lew Pointer of St.

Benedict's at heavyweight. The nonchampion upstarts still eligible are brothers Francis Dunn (112) and Ed Dunn (119) of Boon-ton; Emilio Nardone (125) of WRESTLING Belleville, brother of former state champion Armondo Nardone; Schafenberg (171), and Lou Fon-tana (heavyweight) of Passaic Valley. Ed Dunn was fourth in the state at 102 pounds in 1987, his freshman year. NOTES Region 5, which is based in Flemington, lost eight of its 13 champions from the gold medal quest Wednesday. They've been thrown into the wrestlebacks and can finish no better than third.

Region 1 (out of Hacken-sack) lost seven and Region 2 (Kearny) lost six. Region 4 out of Wallkill Valley lost only one champion Ed Jamieson of Morris Knolls. Jamieson was fifth last year. Ricky Tucker of Paulsboro, who was fourth last year and was coming out of an unseeded position, lost in the prequarters to Jason Evers of Summit. Three bouts in the quarterfinals Friday will pit seeded wrestlers against each other.

At 125, it's Bill Blauvelt of Cherry Hill West against second-seeded Vin San-taniello of Brick Memorial. At 160, it's Carlos Garay of Rahway against Brian Abdon of Lower Cape May. At 171, it's Garfield's Danys against Ethan Waller of Manalapan. Danys defeated Passaic County champion Mario Mancini of Passaic Valley Wednesday. i Returning State champion Mike Duhigg, the top seed at 125 pounds, was among 20 seeds to fall in the prequarterfinals.

The next highest was second-ranked 1 Impounder Chris Jordan of West-field. Jordan took fourth a year ago. Three third-seeded wrestlers and three fourths were among those beaten. The unluckiest draw today goes to Sam Delio of Middletown South, who faces elimination the hands of the angry Duhigg the wrestlebacks. Francis Dunn, Santaiti, and Anderson face No.

1 seeds in the quarterfinals. In one of the more spirited first-round battles Wednesday, Josh Lipton of Tenafly scored a single-leg takedown at the buzzer to force the 112-pound match with Anthony Gehcarelli of Passaic Valley into overtime. Gencarelli took the 7-6 win with an escape. i NJSIAA schedule Jitfwii 6ya. PriBcstsa FrHij Quarterfinals and wrestlebacks.

"Maybe we had too much respect for them," said the 6-8 forward. "They beat us three times this year." One of the major reasons for the comeback was the board play of Sean Rooney, who came away with 12 rebounds. "We won the game on hard work," said if we lost this game after coming back from 27-8, I'd be just as proud of our players." SL Anthony 56, McCorristin 54 a steal tor another layup. Then it was Street again with a steal and layup and the Friars were up, 47-45. And after the Iron Mikes (26-4) missed a shot, Sean Rooney grabbed a rebound and tossed a long pass with Williams scoring to make it a nine-point run.

McCorristin soon responded with six straight, four by Seton Hall-bound Bryan Caver, and the Friars trailed, 52-51. Rhodes, who finished with 15 points and three rebounds, hit a three-pointer but Bass came back with an outside shot to give McCorristin its final lead, 53-53, with 3:16 remaining. Four straight free throws by Rhodes, who had 11 points in the last quarter, provided the winning points. McCorristin had one more chance, but Bass's wild attempt from the corner missed the basket and Caver's long toss also missed. "I think Rod felt he had to do it all in the first half," said when he had to take charge By Bob Kurland Staff Writer PISCATAWAY What separates a champion from the rest? Talent, of course, but more important, the ability to take the other guy's best punch and come back to win.

St. Anthony illustrated this Thursday night when it spotted McCorristin a 19-point lead only to come back to score a 56-54 victory. The win boosted the Tournament of Champions defending champion into Sunday's title contest against Elizabeth. "This was the greatest comeback any team of mine has had," said coach Bob Hurley, who was forced to play without his injured point guard, Danny Hurley, his son. Rod Rhodes opened at the point and was found wanting so St.

Anthony (27-3) went to other players. One of those was Lamont Street, who wound up with 12 points and four steals. "We never FG FT Reb ST. "We just knew we had to pick up our game a couple of notches." Street pointed to a spectacular three-point first-quarter buzzer shot by McCorristin's Mike Bass as the turning point. The entire McCorristin bench poured out on the court as if they had won the game instead of making it 25-8. "When we saw them celebrating it kind of gave us even more incentive to come back," Street said. After closing it to 33-29 at the half, the Friars fell back, 45-39, after three. "We then went to a full-court press," said Hurley, "and it paid off in some turnovers." After Woodrow Williams hit a pair of free throws, Street picked off a pass and fed Rhodes for a layup.

And on the ensuing in-bounds pass, Rhodes came up with "Luther played a tremendous game on defense," said coach Ben Candelino. "And he was especially effective under the boards in the second quarter." Snyder (28-4) stayed with Elizabeth (31-1) for 10 minutes behind the shooting of Roy Hairston. But with the score 21-15, the Minute-men ran off 12 straight points and it was all over. Tyron Brown contributed to the run with four straight baskets. "Tyrone is great on a transitional game and with him on the wing we were able to run off those points," said Candelino.

"But he's played well in big games such as St. Anthony and Roselle. He's a great, finisher." Brown finished with 14 points on 7-of-8 from the floor. Hairston Elizabeth headed to NJSIAA WRESTLING caps St. Peter's rally of final led all scorers with 21 points.

The key to the game was Elizabeth's defense, which held high-scoring Rahkiim Burgess to three baskets in 14 attempts. Now the Minutemen will go after the TOC title. (2), noon Rutgers at Miami (Fla.) 730 P.m. By Bob Kurland Staff Writer PISCATAWAY Top-seeded Elizabeth rolled over Snyder, 74-46, Thursday night at Rutgers Athletic Center to earn a visit to its second straight Tournament of Champions boys basketball title game. "They're No. 1 in the state and they proved that tonight," said Snyder coach Artie Rubin. "And Luther Wright did a job on us.

"You can preach to your kids to go' at him, but when they do and look up at him they forget and change their shots." The 7-foot-2 Wright, who scored 17 points, finished with only seven rebounds but blocked eight shots and forced the Tigers into taking poor layups. Pinch hit Pinch hitter Tony Calandrillo delivered a two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead St. Peter's College to a 7-6 victory over New Hampshire Thursday at Cocoa Beach, in a college baseball game. The Peacocks (5-2) rallied from a 6-3 deficit with a three-run sixth, highlighted by shortstop Pat Lockwood's two-run double. In the seventh, Pat Fay singled, went to second on a walk, and reached third on a fielder's choice to set up the winning run.

Fay was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Elsewhere, Bill Champi went 2-for-5 with three RBI, including a two-run homer during a four-run fourth inning as Fordham topped Fairleigh Dickinson, 11-6. The Knights (2-6) had rallied from a four-run deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the second inning. Steve Budd led the rally with a two-run homer. Tony Oliphant broke a 5-5 tie with a three-run homer in the sixth to lift Christopher Newport (Va.) to a 9-6 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson-Madison.
