"The zone worked," said Rubin. "They seemed to play well against the man, and we hoped the next move we made they wouldn't answer it.

Fortunately they missed some shots and that helped pick us up. "Give them a lot of credit for their great comeback, but the energy it took for them to get there cost them at the end." Walker gave Snyder a powerful GHOUPl BOYS effort with 17 rebounds the Tigers outrebounded Kennedy, 65-24 plus 12 points and four assists. "He's been playing well the last four games," said Rubin of Walker. "He's getting his confidence and I hope it carries over to the Tournament of Champions." Rahkiim Burgess, after a slow first half in which he was benched i -v J- 4 "I -V -1 I 1 J-t Mi' I 'f By Bob Kurland Record Staff Writer PISCATAWAY Snyder became the first Jersey City public school team to win a basketball State championsip Saturday when it defeated Kennedy of Iselin, 65-46, before 2,000 fans in Rutgers Athletic Center. The talL talented Tieers (28-3) showed once again they have a tendency to play down to the level of their opponents.

They seemed ready to make the Group 3 title game a rout when they took a 15-4 first-quarter lead and extended it to 31-16 at halftime. And the only reason it was that close was Snyder missed a large number of inside shots in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament game. Kennedy (28-3) came out tight and apparently in awe of Snyder as it put up an assortment of poor shots. Even some of the few good shots missed their mark by a foot, including an air ball on a layup. But before the Tigers could pick up their championship trophy, they made a game out of it in the third quarter by turning over the ball, missing shots, and allowing the smaller Mustangs to grab, rebounds.

Once the Mustangs saw that Snyder was human, they started hitting shots. And with Ray Mu-lero and Linford Reyes collecting six points apiece, Kennedy closed the deficit to 40-37 at the end of the third quarter. During the brief intermission, Snyder coach Artie Rubin asked his assistant what defense to use and the answer was a zone. Kennedy opened the fourth period with a Mulero layup and it was a one-point game. It also signaled the end of the Mustangs' brave fight.

256. By Bob Kurland Staff Writer PISCATAWAY Until last 'week, Alcides Catanho was a of Luther Wright's sup-'porting cast. But the 6-foot-5 ju-'' nior grabbed for the golden ring Saturday afternoon and led Elizabeth to a 75-59 win over Trenton Central for its third straight Group 4 State boys basketball 'championship. During the early going it appeared the 7-2 Wright would score as many points as he desired. The 'gentle giant made all seven of his first-quarter shots.

His mates failed to get him the ball in the second period, however, 5 and he scored only two points. So Catanho took over with four bas-kets on the way to a 21-point, 11-" 'rebound performance. And when Wright ran into foul trouble he drew his fourth with three minutes to go in the third period Catanho took charge. "It's nice stepping out of Luther's shadow," said Catanho after being presented with the 'game's Most Valuable Player trophy. "But he's a great player who some day may make the NBA and I'll always be able to say I played with him." On Thursday, Wright also ran into foul problems and Catanho responded with 27 points in a 65--44 win over Kennedy.

"People keep telling me that I'll get my chance next season," said Ca- tanho. "This was my chance in the last two games." GROUP 4 BOYS Wright finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots. "I was upset about the fouls, especially because of the good start I had in the first half," said the center. When Wright was rested in the third period the Minutemen (30-1) held a 45-36 lead. By the time he returned in the fourth quarter, Elizabeth had it wrapped up, 60-43.

"I think we proved today that we're not a one-man team," said winning coach Ben Candelino. "And we had a different look with Catanho at center and Isaac Morgan up front." Trenton (25-3) was led by high-skying Jamar Dowling who had 15 points and six rebounds. The 5-11 Dowling and his teammates battled the taller Minutemen underneath throughout and just lost the rebounding edge, 34-32. Drandakis, who shot 7-for-ll with 15 points in the first half, was named the Most Valuable Player. She was a steady force for the Spartans throughout the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament. "To me, it's all a matter of staying calm and not to let the crowd noise bother you," said Drandakis, whose baseline jumper became a familiar sight during the tournament. "I hear the noise but I don't mind the pressure. I do well in pressure situations." Drandakis' shooting powered the Spartans (28-0) to a 28-16 halftime lead.
