Slippery Streets Plague Estherville Motorists Estherville (la.) Daily News, DEC. 18, 1974 ESTHERVILLE Five accidents were reported to Estherville police Tuesday as icy streets continued to plague many drivers. Phillip James Manz, Ayrshire, was the driver of a 1968 auto that collided with a 1969 auto driven by Edmund B. Seery III, Woburn, on Central Avenue east of Sixth Street at 11:53 a.m. Tuesday.

The Manz car sustained $305 damage to the rear end while the Seery auto received front end damage, according to police. Cars driven by Donna Marie Najt, Jackson, and Catherine Lynn Reinders, Cedar Rapids, collided at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday at North Seventh and Fourth Avenue North. The 1973 Najt auto received front and right side damage while the 1965 Reinders auto sustained damage to the left rear, according to Estherville police. Cars operated by Vivian Crook, 1548 Maplecrest, Estherville, and Christi Olson, 1252 North Eighth Street, Estherville, collided at the intersection of North 15th Street and 13th Avenue North at 3:50 p.m.

Four new directors named to the Estherville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. They include Lee Alig, Bruce Bosworth, Mike Reynolds and Jim Hall.

They will serve four years on the board. THIRD WEEK, DEC. 1969 Candidates for Iowa Lakes Community College 'Miss Merry Christmas' title include Margaret Myers, Estherville; Becky Steinbeck, Hartley; Joan Grange, Ruthven; Pat Bothwell, Estherville; Sherry Schaeffer, Pocahontas and Marie del Carmen LaSanta, Estherville. John McFadden, 31, associated with the Iowa Trust and Savings Bank in Estherville for nine years, will become part- owner of the Stan Young Insurance Agency, effective Jan. 1, 1970.

Pat Minor, Estherville and Dennis Camfield, Sherburn, compile a perfect 4-0 record for the Iowa Lakes Community College debate team in a college debate tournament at Sioux Falls, S.D. Kathy Vagle, Estherville, and Mark Happe, Spirit Lake lose only to the University of Nebraska. Iowa Lakes team ties for first place with South Dakota Tech in the 25-school meet. Robert Fridley, Des Moines, purchases capital stock in seven northwest theatres owned by Arrow Theatre Corporation, The Grand Theatre in Estherville is one of the theatres involved. THIRD WEEK, DECEMBER 1964 Yield hits 172 bushels on an FFA one-acre yield contest plot supervised by David Lair.

Iowa Trust and Savings holds open house to show newly remodeled facility to the public. George Shadle, assistant trust officer, joins the staff. Steve Woodley, former wrestler at Estherville High School, is wrestling for Iowa State University, Ames. He is wrestling on the freshman team in the' 115-pound classification. Thespian Troupe 1841 holds initiation.

THIRD WEEK, DECEMBER, 1949 Mayor George Robb announces a parking meter holiday in downtown Estherville to encourage shopping in Estherville. The meters will not need to be 'fed' from Dec. 19-24 and each meter will be covered with a brightly decorated paper sack with Christmas greetings from the city office. Lincoln School in Estherville will get $1,823 automatic pneumatic heat control system installed in eight rooms over the Christmas vacation break.

Colder weather is called for until Christmas, when a warming trend is expected. George Hess scores 14 points as Estherville Junior College upsets Northwestern College of Orange City, 33-30. Per pupil costs of transportation is lowest of all schools in the Lakes Conference in Estherville, says a report compiled by Lakes Conference Superintendents. Estherville spends approximately $54 per year per student in transportation expenses.

Estherville also has the largest enrollment in the conference and the school system is growing the fastest. THIRD WEEK, DECEMBER, 1924 Dr. Harry Johnston, formerly of Swea City, returns to Iowa from Connecticut to take over the dental practice of Dr. Galloway, Estherville while Dr. Galloway visits Excelsior Springs, for the winter.

Dr. Johnston plans to locate a private practice in Estherville next spring and will move his family here in June. Monday at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Ninth Street was reported to Estherville police Tuesday. A 1973 auto driven by Steven C. Ament, 15 First Avenue South, Estherville, received front end damage after it collided with a van operated by Floyd Albert Miller, 1333 North 12th, Estherville. The 1973 van received no damage, according to Estherville police. Wallingford Petersons At Concert In Moorehead Mr.

and Mrs. Nordein Peterson drove to Moorhead, Friday to attend the annual Christmas Concert at Concordia College. 7,000 attended the program. They returned home late Saturday night. Mr.

and Mrs. Dick Herum and Denny spent Saturday in Mankato attending a wrestling meet. Steve Herum, a student at Brookings wrestled a champion from Ames. Ron-Howing to attend a National Wildlife Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mr.

and Mrs. Wayne Paulson and family, Minneapolis, are expected to visit in the parental Chester Paulson home Thursday, Dec. 19th. They will continue on to Decorah to spend Christmas in the Movde home. Mr.

and Mrs. Clifford Egeland drove to Sioux City to meet his brother Marvin, from army service in Alaska. He came to attend his parents' 45th wedding anniversary. Trial Dates Set FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) Trial dates have been set in Webster County District Court for two Fort Dodge brothers charged in connection with the death of Richard Wingerson, 24, Fort Dodge. Demoney Students Entertain Good Samaritan Residents A group of second and third grade children from Demoney Elementary entertained residents of Good Samaritan Center and Rosewood Manor with Christmas carols Monday afternoon.

Photo by Connie Davis Iowa Community College Enrollment Up DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Fall enrollment at Iowa area community colleges and vocational schools increased 6 percent, the Iowa Department of Public Instruction said Wednesday. Enrollment is 27,001 this semester, versus 25,452 a year ago, said Dr. William M.

Baley, associate superintendent area schools and career education. The department said totals for adult education divisions will be figured later. All but two of the 15 area schools increased enrollment. Baley said there are many high school students enrolled part-time in special area school programs. One program which declined, he said, was the agricultural production program for veterans, which fell from 2,558 last year to 2,410.

Oppose Release DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The release from confinement of a man charged with robbing and shooting a former Polk County supervisor has prompted the county supervisors to ask for a judicial review. Supervisor B. E. Newell told fellow supervisors Tuesday that he is preturbed by release 4 by District Judge Luther Glanton of William Cartwright, Des Moines, under a $50,000 bond without security. The supervisors want Chief District Judge Gibson Holliday to investigate the release.

Legal Insurance? DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Prepaid legal insurance may be a reality for some Iowa groups in a few months, according to Insurance Commissioner William Huff. The new form of insurance allows policy holders to retain lawyers in return for monthly New Iowa Lakes Community College Greenhouse Horticulture Program Added To ILCC's Emmetsburg Campus EMMETSBURG A new greenhouse at Iowa Lakes Community College's south attendance center at Emmetsburg is making possible new learning experiences for ILCC students. The 30 foot 100 foot structure is of steel and fiberglass construction and is being used in connection with the Horticulture and Agricultural Evaluation programs. The new hothouse will house vegetables, houseplants and flowers and will give students experience in the care of plants and in different soil types. Ronald Milbach, who last year was an instructor in the Agricultural Evaluation program, is the instructor in the new Horticulture program.

Students attend classes from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. learning basic theories that are then applied in laboratory experiences and on-the-job training. Students in the new program are prepared for careers in greenhouse work, maintenance of golf courses and parks, and in the growing of decorative plants. The program is seven quarters in length.

Masseuses Fighting DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) A Des Moines ordinance banning outcall message services and regulating massage parlors will be considered by Polk County District Court Judge Dale Riches Missildine beginning Thursday. The judge begins hearing arguments that day.

Lawyers for several masseuses have asked for an injunction banning enforcement of the ordinance passed Monday night. The masseuses claim their civil rights have been violated by the prohibition against an established business practice. Meanwhile, officials in six suburban Des Moines communities say they have no immediate plans to pass similar legislation banning outcall massage services and regulating parlors.
