That has to be a sobering prospect for BCTV. If enough people tune in BCTV's rivals and like what they see, it could fi nally loosen the Burnaby station's stranglehold on the Lower Mainland TV-news audience. If that happens, it's possible that not even Parsons, with all BCTV's horses and all BCTV's men, will be able to put the Burnaby-based station back together again. Ann Landers i Ji VANCOUVER SUN The producer of the Vancouver-based television series The Sentinel said he's overjoyed fy the grassroots campaign to save his show.

"It's wonderful to know so many people care about the show and are being so persistent in their efforts to keep it on the air next season," Sentinel producer Bob Hargrove said Monday from his Vancouver office. Since the sci-fi show disappeared in May from the United Paramount Network's fall schedule, heart-broken fans have banded together in a save-the-Sentinel campaign. To date, the grassroots movement has waged a war of words against UPN executives via the Internet, fax machines, telephones, the postal service and most recently by taking out an ad in the newspaper USA Today. "When UPN said the fans said 'No Help The Sentinel get back on the air contact UPN and let your voice be heard," read the June 15 ad. Hargrove said the fan reaction was spontaneous, making it even more impressive in these days of orchestrated media events.

"The great amount of support doesn't really surprise me it's a great show. It's the intensity of the support that I find i Vancouver Television has aggressively i struck at BCTV's weakest point the six hours of daily news programming other than News Hour now being re-I placed, for the most part, by reruns of I game shows. VTV has inaugurated a 5 p.m. newscast and is suddenly trumpeting its daily Vancouver Breakfast, a superior program to BCTV's Morning News even on a bad j'day. Vancouver Breakfast has struggled1 to find an audience; it trails BCTV's Morning News by a commanding 32,000 viewers (5,000 to BCTV's 37,000, according to BBM).

BCTV has traditionally done well with its off-peak news programs. The station's vaunted Early News, anchored by Pamela Martin who is walking the same picket line as her reporter colleagues pulls in an average of 269,000 vviewers each weekday afternoon. i BCTV is now trying to get by without 'its early morning, midday, late-afternoon "and late-night newscasts, and it's only a matter of time before viewers used to watching BCTV at these times turn to other stations to satisfy their desire for news. SHANDLING from C5 Confronting own responsive chord "The show is about the darker side of our emotions that we try to conceal," Shandling said then. "Jealousy, insecurity, competitiveness characters on this show feel these things in a real way, and they attempt to cover their emotions in the same ways that people do in real life." That description still holds.

As much glee as Larry Sanders took in tweaking show-biz phoniness, it aimed to do more than spoof the talk-show wars that first inspired it. RpaH7inp- that a nrnhlpm1 demons struck with audience Larry Sanders has always been an act of courage, a masterful effort led by someone portraying a character dangerously close to himself. As Larry, Shandling. dug deep to confront his own demons, and did it brilliantly. No wonder the show connected with its viewers.

No wonder its star is ready for a breather. Shandling, who has not announced his next project, says he will "be heading towards Hawaii. Not TO Hawaii. Towards." 0 win go away in time help people climb out of a dppn. dark hnlp.

(U'H EAR ANN: I am a lawyer whcf I fights psychiatric malprao JlS tice. In my work, I've seen many families agonize over deaths that could have been prevented. While we have been told that no one is to blame when someone takes his or her own life, the truth is that many deaths could be averted if mental health workers, physicians and families would simply stop, look and listen. Suicide is not a random act. Members of the medical and mental health communities must take notice ng of contemporary surprising.

Hargrove said the Internet has made grassroots fan campaigns possible, pointing to the Save the Sentinel Web site, which racked up more than 13,000 hits since it was posted just two days-after the show was dropped from the lineup. The show was cancelled despite a cliffhanger "to be continued" ending to the last episode. Hargrove has yet to hear if the groundswell has reversed the show's fate. "I don't think the network knew they'd be facing such a public outcry over this but whether or not it will make any difference, I don't know. I haven't heard anything." Hargrove said the network would give him its final decision by the end of the week.
