THURSDAY, OCT. 16, 1958 For Halloween, You'll Need 'Spook Food' Small Fry Like These Treats for Parties That Night By CECILY BROWN'STOXE Associated Prtss Food Editor If you have small fry in your family, Hallowe'en won't be Hallo- we'en unless you have some spook. food around So here's a recipe for e^allowe'en Treats from which you ircan shape five jack-o'-lanterns or two cats! The youngsters will have a lot of fun making these party favors. Their base Is thrifty puffed rice cereal and their candy syrup has marshmallows, peanut butter and chocolate In ft. Of course you cnn't give a Halloween party for youngsters without Candy Apples so here's R recipe guaranteed to fill all sma ii eaters' expectations. National Apple Week comes in the period between October 23 and November ]—just in time for all Hallow's Eve. Hallowe'en Treats Ingredients: 8 cups puffed rice. V> Pound fresh marshmallows (about 32), ^ cup peanut butter or margarine, 2 squares (2 ounces) unsweetened chocolate. Method: Heat puffed rice in a moderate (350 P.) oven about 10 minutes. Pour into large greased bowl, place mjirshmallmvs, peanut butter, butter and chocolate in top of double boiler over boiling water; stir occasionally until blended. Pour chocolate - marshmallow mixture over puffed rice, mixing until each kernel fc evenly coated. With greased hands shape puffed rice candy Into Jack-o'-lanterns, cats or other Halloween figures. Decorate with gumdrops Inserted on toothpicks. tf s Hallowe'en Caramel * NUT APM.ES Ingredients: 6 red Delicious apples, 1 cup siJsnr. 2/3 cup corn syrup. 1 cup cream, 2 tablespoons butter or margarine. 1 teaspoon vanilla, coarsely chopped walnuts. Method: Wash apples well and dry. Stick a wcoden skewer into stem end of each. Combine sugar, syrup, 'cream and butter. Heat, stirring only until sugar Is dissolved. Cook wit'-out stirring to firm ball stage 1242F.I or until a few drops of mixture will form a firm ball when dropped into cQl'l water. Remove from htat and'.stir in vanilla. For broiling purchase either veal or lamb liver, says Reba Staggs, home economist. Have the liver sliced about « inch thick. When ready to make the kabobs, cut the meat Into 1»4 Inch squares. Plan on about six squares for each kabob. Using a metal or wooden skewer, Insert it into one end of a bscon slice, add a square ol liver, then a small onion. Thread the bacon alternately with each square of liver and onion, until the skewer is filled. Place the kabobs on your broiler rack and brush with melted butter or margarine.
