FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1950 BLYTHEVILLE (ARK.) COURIER NEWS THKfcJfi Truman Shortcut Irks Economist Dr. Edwin C. Nourse Voices Alarm Over Deficit Spending KANSAS CITY, Jan. 20. OT—Dr. Edwin C. Nourse, until recently chairman of President Truman's Economic Advisory Council, said yesterday .the government is taking an Inflationary shortcut to try to reach reaj prosperity. "No sober business man or cltl- *en can possibly approve such a "ourse," lie told the sixty-first annual convention of the Western Rc- *jH'. Implement and Hardware As- Viciatloti. "He surely must DC looking Pt these lirst-of-the-year utterances of a sound, well-pruned budget with a pretty cold, fishy eye. He must be saying to himself. 'I don't believe It." 1 Nourse resigned from his council Job last November. He charged Truman's present policy was giving ilp service to the principle of good business and thai the nation \vas slipping Into a deficit spending as a way o( life. "I don't think It Is a good policy to blandly accept an added deficit of $5.000,000,000 on top of the deficit we have at present." he said. "The government should be deeply concerned when it looks back six months t hence to discover that \t ended the year with S2.000.000.000 of added debt for the current fiscal year. "On top of that when you blandly promise !o continue to buy prosperity out of added debt it just doesn't seem to be good housekeeping." Wednesday Prayer Meeting 8:00. Friday Men's Brotherhood.
