So, what's it like, how does it compare? The question is much like asking to compare the taste of one candy apple two years after the first. Shania's style remains as sweet and tasty and enticing as ever. Perhaps even more so. With a musically diverse serving of 16 songs stretching beyond one hour all of them co-written by Twain and hubbie-producer Mutt Lange the concept behind Come On Over seems to be "Give 'em what they want, and more of it." Only two of the batch are heart-tugging ballads From This Moment On, a hit-in-the-making duet with Bryan White, and the final cut, You've Got A Way.

That shouldn't be too surprising. After all, with The Woman In Me selling more than 10 million copies, highest ever for a female country artist, what has Shania to be melancholy about? Except, perhaps, all those nasty rumours that she exaggerated her childhood poverty in rural Ontario just to enhance the marketing image? Her attitude remains sassy and confident, her voice distinctive and sultry, and her catchy foot-tappin' music continues to roam that indefinable netherworld between country and pop. All of which begs more questions. Will Shania finally go on tour? Yes, a tour is in the making for 1998 and you can bet it will be huge. Will Come On Over match the commercial success of The Woman In Me? That's a tall order, but it should 1 WASHINGTON SQUARE 1:454:2572010:00 PARENTAL GUIDANCE B.C.

Would Shania have made it so big without Lange ensuring she got the best promotion, the best musical production, the best of everything? Ah, now some questions just seem to answer themselves. Larry Pynn 581-1716 Surrev I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER 7:30 9:50 LLOYD DYKK SUN MUSIC CRITIC It was almost ridiculous hearing two such violinists on the same day and on the same stage: first Cho-Liang Lin in the afternoon with the Vancouver Symphony (reviewed Monday), and then in the evening, Sarah Chang, the 16-year-old violin virtuoso, born in Philadelphia to Korean parents, making her first recital tour. All of 12 when she recorded some Brahms Hungarian Dances and the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on the EMI label, she wrapped her little fingers around her three-quarter-scale violin and was already producing a great sound not the routine virtuosity of a whiz kid but something eerily mature. At 16, she's approaching the kind of playing once produced by the legendary Heifetz. It was sensational the way she captivated the Orpheum audience, which knew it was in the company of almost preternatural authority.

She seems technically flawless. If she ever misses a note, it is just by microns. Even more impressive than her technique is the musicality of her thought. She has one of the most supple, natural bow arms in the business and she uses a long, long stroke. This makes for a long flow of silky phrases, and she's a master at knowing how to weigh, colour and punctuate the flow to produce an elegant sentence.

Chang and pianist Charles Abramovic played Mozart, Richard Strauss and Prokofiev sonatas, beginning with Mozart's early Major Sonata, K. 296. If its violin part represents the instrument in its shy subordination to the piano, Chang, who played it with gusto and freshness, never heard the news. The early Richard Strauss sonata, which is almost orchestral, and Prokofiev's Major sonata were both big statements, sumptuously phrased and nuanced, boldly accented, with themes beautifully characterized. Playing a Chopin piano nocturne transcribed by the violinist Nathan Mil-stein, she produced tonal delicacy that suggested the movement of a lace curtain in a breath of air.

Pablo de Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy ended the program in an electrical storm of technique that had to be heard to be SWEET HEREAFTER 7:209:55 HA B.C. The song You're Still the One, for instanceis about the kind of triumph you feel, when you have a successful relationship and you win against the odds," says Shania.

"Mutt and I come from such different worlds and, in many people's eyes, we were considered unlikely to succeed. But very much to the contrary, we're very happy and very much made for each other in every way creatively, intimately and on a friendship level." Twain, who co-wrote every song on the album with Lange, says her music is entertainment first and foremost. "People ask me, What do you want people to get from your And I say, 'I want them to be That's really the bottom line. Appearing just a few years after she began earning her daily bread as a singer at small-town Ontario resort, the album vaulted her into the ranks of such international stars as Celine Dion and earned Twain a truck-load of awards.

Now with the whole country music world watching, Twain's followup disc, titled Come On Over, is released today. "I'll tell you why the new album ended up being as diverse in style as it is," Twain says in a telephone interview. "A lot of fans that approached me about The Woman in Me were mothers and daughters or uncles and nephews. And it was like the generation gap was bridged with my album. They were saying that, in the car, my album was the only thing they could all agree to listen to.

"That was the biggest compliment So I realized that I wanted to achieve that again." She says the 16 tracks on the hour-long CD are "not as fabricated lyrically. The subject matter is more from my own perspective and very true, very real and very conversational." THE SWEET HEREAFTER 4:15, 7:10 9:25 L.A.
