The Vancouver Sun, Wednesday, August 30, 1995 C9 CELEBRITIES Associated Press Moore ready for parent circuit Forsythe of Forsythe Racing, which has announced a partnership with Player's Ltd. that will see them run one car on the Indy circuit next year. "There's going to be a test at the end of the season. Then we'll see what happens." But, since Moore is already under contract, he certainly would seem to have the best chance to earn a job for Forsythe. I Greg Moore has been about as close to perfect as you can be for a sustained period in a sport Moore, a 20-year-old whose maturity behind the wheel of his Firestone Indy Lights Lola-Buick belies his tender age, has won nine of 10 races this season.

The only time he hasn't won, the native of Maple Ridge finished second to Robbie Buhl at Detroit With races remaining at Vancouver and Monterey, Moore's nine victories have equaled the season record set in 1990 by fellow Canadian Paul Tracy. Now that Jacques Villeneuve has announced that he will leave the PPG Cup series at the end of this season for a Formula One ride, Moore is expected to step up to the big leagues in 1996. "I'm not there, yet," said Moore, who has signed a long-term contract with Gerry NFL great Payton knows what it takes to win races MIKE BEAMISH 0k FINANCING 7 OR UP TO JL. $1,000. oo-jt CASH LOW LOW INTEREST! 1 If you buy anywhere else you'll pay too much! 1 Why wait for winter get a Zephyr deal now! "Sweetness" doesn't disagree. "We're in this because we're pioneers, becuse we're adventurers because we're stupid," says the Hall of Fame running back, ex of the Chicago Bears. Every Sunday, Payton faces fourth and long on the starting grid as co-owner of Payton-Coyne Racing.

The Coyne-Payton operation is the flip side of the lucrative IndyCar coin, a struggling team that faces the heat from behind and ahead on an oil-slickened field. Payton, who has driven Formula 2000 and in the Trans-Am series from 1992-93, joined forces last December with Dale Coyne, the Plainfield, Illinois owner who has offered rent-a-rides to rookies such as Paul Tracy and long-shots like Ross Bentley. For some high-profile athletes and entertainers, motor racing is a means to satisfy a jock-sniffing urge, an attraction that quickly evaporates when the bills roll in. Among those who've become involved in the racing world recently are Joe Montana, a part-time owner in the Target-Chip Ganassi Racing Team, and, fleetingly, actor Gene Hack-man. Two years ago, Hackman was introduced at a press conference in Vancouver as a part-owner of Galles Racing, an affiliation that lasted as long as an average pit stop.

"David Hasselhof (Baywatch) lasted a couple of years," Coyne says. "I think the two genuine ones that you have here are the guys that race. Paul Newman drove race cars, and then he came in. Walter Payton's the same way." "He understands what's going on. At Indianapolis, somebody asked Walter, 'What advice would you have for I jumped in and said, 'You've got to spend money to make "That's right," Payton says.

"Tell Montana he can use racing for write-offs. If we were in this to make money, we'd already be selling parts to make ends meet wholesaling hubcaps." But the jokescease when serious talk turns to the skyrocketing costs of IndyCar racing, a scenario that frightens not only Coyne but many other owners. "The engine costs are out of hand," says team owner Carl Hogan. "When we started this thing (in 1979) says team owner Pat Patrick, "I could run a team for $800,000 for the year. When (Mario) Andretti and Gordie (Johncock) drove for me, the two cars were about $1.6 million.

"Now my engine bill alone is $2 million. As far as I'm concerned getting that down is Andrew Craig's (president and CEO of CART) biggest challenge." IndyCar owners have asked their rules committee to work with engine manufacturers in developing a plan to slow the cost spiral. Teams can spend up to $4 million a year leasing engines. "The cost keeps going up when there are new development pieces," Coyne says. "And if only a few teams can afford the new pieces then we're back to the situation like we had in the late 1980s when a few teams had access to the Chevrolets, they won all the races, and a lot of other teams went out of business." Alessandro Zampedri of Italy and Vancouver's Ross Bentley are the Payton-Coyne drivers in Sunday's Molson Indy Vancouver, but in a series whose pride and concern is hightech advancement, their chances are cooked before the green flag drops.

They're driving "94 Lola Ford-Cosworths, out-of-date equipment that virtually guarantees they won't be in the hunt. Race fans are conditioned to see human faces under those helmets and to believe that the guy behind the wheel does make a difference. When the biological element driver competence is about equal, it's really the engineers, designers and mechanics who decide the issue. After all, if horsepower, aerodynamics, tire adhesion and downforce didn't make a difference, Emerson Fittipaldi and Al Unser Jr. would have overcome whatever mechanical problems there were and willed their cars into the starting field for this year's Indy 500.

When the announcement goes off for, "Gentlemen, start your engines" for some the race is already over. It's a different experience for Payton, who can't ever remember the Bears being down by a couple of touchdowns before the opening kickoff. "Unfortunately, this sport is not run on a level playing field," Payton says. 'To finish seventh and eighth with our cars at Long Beach (April 9) was a real good feeling. It's especially satisfying when you know you don't have the budgets that other teams have, but you're still running in the top 10 with less money because of how hard the team works." How much of a beating can Payton take? It will cost him dearly, because the stakes are so unusually high.

But enormous ambition in motor racing has never been realized without cost. The fact is, before you can run to daylight, you've got to grind it out for many years. "Walter understands what racing is," Coyne says. "We've got a long way to go and he realizes that. It's like when he first started with the Boars.

They weren't the greatest team in football. But each year, if you continue to grow and keep the right attitude, you can become a championship team."
