The department's monthly food-at-home index Increased by 0.2 per cent from Sept. 14 to Oct. 19 and is 13 per cent higher than a year ago. Pork prices are expected to be lower. Higher-than-usual amounts of chicken and turkey in storage should mean lower prices for those products. Chicken stocks are 124 per cent higher than last year while turkey supplies are 31 per cent greater than a year earlier. The survey showed that prices for dairy products, canned tuna and salmon and fresh and frozen fish and eggs were all higher. Fresh fruit prices dropped 12.8 per cent even though the domestic apple crop is lower than last year's.

Increased storage charges may result in high apple prices later. With the return to cold weather, fresh vegetable prices rose 8 9 per cent in October after dropping 23.2 per cent in August and 9.5 per cent in September. But prices for potatoes, onions and carrots declined slightly. However, export demand for Canadian potatoes may push up their domestic price. It will list the price difference for food products between what the farmer receives and what the consumer pays. The survey said beef prices dropped nine cents a pound to farmers between July and September but retail prices were only one cent a pound lower, meaning that processors, wholesalers and retailers increased their profits.
