New Milford holds off Heights is ,1 6 Cfr- ence and a much bigger interior line, limited Hasbrouck Heights to 25 rushing yards. The Knights relied on the run almost exclusively, finishing with 42 rushes and just six passes, but one of the aerials resulted in New Milford's first TD. Ken Flynn lofted a 53-yard pass to 6-foot-3 junior receiver Kurt Youngs with 4:21 left in the opening period for a 7-0 New Milford lead. Mike McSherry, who finished with 102 yards rushing, got unpacked during a second-period New Milford drive that went 82 yards on nine plays and concluded with McSherry's 25-yard run around left end for a touchdown with 8:31 left in the half.

New Milford appeared to be headed to an easy win, but the Knights were tripped up thereafter by two problems they've had all year fumbled punts and mix-ups on quarterback snaps. A second-period Hasbrouck Heights punt was fumbled by fJ By Barry Gramlich Correspondent BERGENFIELD Lopsided scores in state championship football games yield happy moments, and sometimes ugly moments. Ugly was the third-period ejection of Hoboken coach Joe Stinson, who resigned after the game. Ugly was 25 penalties for 271 yards, the majority of which were for unsportsmanlike conduct Ugly was a bench-clearing brawl with 1:14 left that ended the game prematurely. But a happy moment, for Ber-genfield at least, was the top-seeded Bears' 52-8 thrashing of the Red Wings to win the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Group 3, North Section 1 championship.

And for Bergen-field coach Alex Turnamian, that result seemed to outweigh the ugly. "It can't take away from our state championship," said Turnamian, whose Bears (11-0) put the finishing touches on an unbeaten season. "The fighting is a frustrating thing that has to be controlled. I was concerned." Concerned for the welfare of his players, who had taken the real fight out of a previously undefeated Hoboken team before halftime. When junior defensive end Anthony Grego returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown, Bergen-field had a 28-0 lead with more than six minutes left in the second quarter.

"From their standpoint, it was a tough loss to swallow," Turnamian said. 'They're an unbeaten team and they see all those points on the scoreboard. I hope they understand we weren't trying to rub it in." A determined Bergenfield defense, led by sophomore linebackers Mike McNulty (four sacks), and Brendan Ferriter (two sacks), limited Hoboken quarterback if i i GROUP 3 last-second touchdown pass forced an overtime. The Knights eventually won, 10-7, in a tie-breaker. Yesterday, New Milford was unable to put Heights away, and the Knights almost paid for it.

Hasbrouck Heights quarterback Matt D'Amato launched an all-passing drive that netted 58 yards to the New Milford nine-yard line with 5:44 to play. Two penalties for illegal use of the hands and illegal procedure plus a two-yard loss on a screen pass left the Aviators with a third-and-goal at the 26. Chris Boyle knocked down a fourth-down pass to end the drive. "I told anyone who tried to tell me this would be an easy game they'd be wrong," said a relieved Conti. "My heart goes out to Nick Delcalzo, the Hasbrouck Heights coach, because he's played two good games in a row in the finals and has nothing to show for it." New Milford, with more experi Catholic Despite reaching the championship game for the second straight year, the Maurauders (8-3) exhibit-ed jitters from the start.

On the game's second play, John Egar fumbled and BC's Bob Kearney recovering on the St. Peter's 23. It was the first of four fumbles lost by the Maurauders. PAROCHIAL A On the next play Kearney, who finished with 141 yards on 25 carries, ran for a touchdown but an illegal procedure penalty nullified the scored. After an incompletion and a six-yard run by Kearney, St.

Peter's blitzed on a third-and-nine play. McGovern rolled away from the pressure and found Rizzi wide open for a 22-yard touchdown just 2:18 into the game. The sparse crowd of approximately 1,200 at Hinchliffe Stadium could have gone home at that point. The Maurauders didn't threaten fa. fci Hound By John Brennan Correspondent NEW MILFORD That uneasy feeling that swept through the New Milford sideline and into the crowd during the fourth quarter yesterday was deja vu, and New Milford coach Rich Conti was getting an especially heavy dose as his team clung to a 13-7 lead over Hasbrouck Heights.

"I looked up at that scoreboard and figured they'd score a touchdown, we'd block the extra point, and here we go to overtime again," said Conti. Instead, the Knights held onto the lead and won their second straight New Jersey State Inter-scholastic Athletic Association North Section 1, Group 1 football championship. Both wins came against Hasbrouck Heights. The script was the same as last year's game, but the roles were reversed. Last year, Heights was supposed to win easily, but New Milford kept within 7-0 until a Bergen rolls to crown i 1 t't McSherry and recovered by Jim Montelbano of Heights at the New Milford 21-yard line.

A gutsy call on a fourth-and-two play produced a 13-yard Hasbrouck Heights touchdown from D'Amato to Robert Richman to make it 13-7 with 4:24 left in the half. New Milford moved inside the Heights 40-yard line four times in the second half but failed to score. The Aviators, who failed to gain more than 26 yards on any drive in the first three quarters, soared after abandoning the running game on their last drive. "Without any doubt, winning the championship was much tougher than last year," said Conti. "Everyone was always picking us to win, but the other teams were extra prepared for us.

We were defending champs, so that's understandable." If Conti thinks opponents were ready this year, he can only imagine the task he'll have next season, now that the Knights have become one of the few teams to win two straight state football titles. them out and made it easy for me. "On my first touchdown, they blitzed, we picked it up, and I went in without anyone touching me." The back went up the middle for a 26-yard score to make it 13-0 34 seconds into the second quarter. McGovern then fired two more TD passes, and the rout was on by termission. Kearney posted his final scholastic TD midway through the third quarter when he capped a 79-yard Crusader drive with a five-yard scamper around left end.

Kearney had 43 yards on the drive. "I won a state title when I was at West Essex," said first-year coach Roca. "And I told the players before the game that there's nothing like having the memory of winning a championship." NOTES Rizzi caught five passes to boost his season total to 34 and his yardage to 624, both BC records. St Peter's Charlie Bible, who entered the game with 1,100 yards rushing, was held to 30 yards on nine carries. And fullback Egar was held to 41 yards.

The heralded Milne needed 149 yards passing to eclipse 3,000 yards for the season, but finished with 105 yards. He was intercepted twice by Bergenfield's two-way terror, junior Ron Villone. Offensively, the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Villone, a split end, caught three passes for 113 yards and one touchdown. In the third period, Villone's punishing blocks leveled two Hoboken defenders, enabling quarterback Tom Fasano to score on an 18-yard run. "Ron Villone is an outstanding football player," Turnamian said.

"If he keeps getting better, he's going to be in the big-time." Take away the first minute of the game when senior fullback George Grube threw a 34-yard tion pass to Glenn PinneL and the Bergenfield game plan was typical. Grube carried 17 times for 98 yards, three touchdowns, and a pair of two-point conversion runs. Senior tailback Scott MacFie carried 14 times for 98 yards, one touchdown, and one conversion. Both backs were effective going up the middle, and when Fasano ran the option. Slotback Frank Manning, tackle Jim Marucci, center Matt Gelis, and tackle Dave Porter did their usual outstanding jobs opening the holes.

"We'd go straight ahead and have success," Turnamian said. "If that bogged down, we ran the option. And I haven't seen anyone run a better option than Tommy Fasano." Fasano finished 6-for-12 for 153 yards, outgaining the entire Hoboken team by 10 yards. The Red Wings' ground attack netted only 36 yards on 23 attempts. That's not good news for Bergenfield's 1987 opponents.

The Bears have seven starters returning on defense. "There's only 11 seniors on the whole roster," Turnamian said. "We should do pretty well next year, considering we had only four returning starters on this team." "I was surprised at how easily we won," said coach Bill Roca.

"They have a fine team that has beaten some of the best in Hudson Couoty. We knew they had an outstanding defense allowed 46 points, so we decided to try opening up our running with the pass. "It worked so well we stayed with it in the first half, and McGovern showed he's an outstanding passer." Another key to BC's success was its offensive line, with center Don Hass, tackle Kevin Twomey, tight end Jim Browning, and mates doing an outstanding job blocking. They neutralized highly publicized defensive linemen Elnardo Webster and Curtis Raeford. "Those two were never a factor in the game," said Roca.

"The blocking was great," said Kearney, who boosted his school record to 1,517 yards on the ground, the top mark in Bergen County this season. "I really thought they would be much tougher, but our line was blowing ports predicted the game would be won in the trenches, but before St. Peter's could deploy its ground troops, Mike McGovern took to the air to lead Bergen Catholic to a 33-0 victory yesterday and its fourth North Section 1, Parochial A football championship. The Crusaders (9-1-1) also won two titles before the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association went to the current playoff system in 1975. "It was fun," said McGovern, "who was given a rare chance to throw long.

He connected with Darren Rizzi twice and Mike Rios once for three first-half touchdowns. "My line gave me great protection and my receivers were wide open," said the junior quarterback after completing seven of nine passes for 156 yards.
