She was 66. Jordan was first elected to the legislature in 1966 along with two other women: Isabel Dawson (McKenzie) and Grace McCarthy (Vancouver-Little Mountain). McCarthy believes all three women were brought into the cabinet of premier W.A.C. Bennett as ministers without portfolio because the premier didn't know what to do with three women in his caucus. "She was an exceptionally good representative for her constituency," McCarthy said.

"She was always very cognizant thdt she represented the Interior. She wanted her colleagues, other MLAs, to never forget the interests of the Okanagan." Jordan was born in Vernon on Dec. 7, 1930, the daughter ofJohn Laidman, an orchardist, and Eva Wiseman. In 1946, she was chosen Miss Vernon as part of the annual Miss PNE contest. She graduated from Vancouver General I lospital's school of nursing in 1952.

After getting elected in 1966 and being appointed minister without portfolio, Jordan used her position to promote tourism. She was one of the few Social Credit MLAs to survive the NDP sweep of 1972. Former NDP premier Dave Barrett said Jordan was a "fierce defender of regional interests." Ile said she was part of the transition of the old Social Credit regime of W.A.C. Bennett and the new LiberaliSocred coalition of his son, Bill. Jordan was often quoted in the media because of her willingness to criticize fellow MLAs and her partisan attacks on the NDP.

In January 1976, Education Minister Pat McGeer said people who couldn't afford increased ICBC rates should sell their cars. Jordan called McGeer's proposed rate increase "totally offensive" and his attitude toward motorists "arrogant and unfeeling." Premier Bill Bennett appointed her tourism minister in January 1980, a post she held until stepping down two years later. Jordan died at Kelowna General I lospital on Monday after battling a degenerative lung disease for 18 years. She is survived by her husband, Laurence (Ted) Jordan, and two sons, Jamie, 42, and Phillips (Pip), 36. A funeral service is set for the All Saints Anglican Church in Vernon at I p.m.
