It has been anchored for the past four days at Barnet Marine Park. Johnston confirmed immigration officials had been waiting for the stowaway since the end of March, when the ship's captain informed Canadian authorities they had a stowaway aboard. Seven stowaways have made their way to the port of Vancouver aboard ocean-going freighters so far this year. There were four stowaways to Vancouver in 1996, 10 in 1995 and 31 in 1994. A stowaway whom immigration officials were waiting to interview has died after jumping ship in Burrard Inlet.

Enforcement manager Rob Johnston said Wednesday they intended to interview the man as soon as the S.K. Junior berthed. But his body was recovered by Ports Canada Police Tuesday morning along the shore of Barnet Marine Park in Burnaby. Ports Canada Police believe the stowaway was from China, where the vessel last docked. A West Coast Express train passenger spotted the floating body.

The stowaway was believed to be 25 to 35 years old. "The body was not in the water any longer than approximately four hours," Constable Tony Blouin said. Establishing the man's identity will be difficult, he said. "We will be taking the routine steps of photographs and fingerprints. How far that will get us remains to be seen." It's believed the man attempted to swim to shore from the vessel S.K.
