C00LIDGE "GrVES UP" AS MERCURY RUfiS TO 102 WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 (A.P.). Apparently waiting for the return of President Coolidge to the city, hot weather came down upon Washington with a vengeance today and as the mercury soared to 102 degrees at the White House the President took the afternoon off. Mr. Coolidge never has liked hot weather and he has avoided It going away during the 4 Summer months, but it has.

been gradually warming tip here since his return from the Black Hills Sunday night. Whi'e he remained in his room this afternoon, the President was said to be bothered by the weather and not ill. He has had some trouble with hoarseners since his return to the city and he thought it best to seek a cool retreat in the mansion after a busy morning. ROUT OF WESTERN HEAT WAVE STARTS IN CHICAGO CHICAOO, Sept. 15 (A.P.).

A Spring like shower late today started the route of September's mid Summer heat wave, in which Middle West millions have sweltered for four days. Darkening clouds intervened earlier in behalf of a parched country, driving the mercury slowly downward here from its high point of 93 degrees, reached shortly after noon. Hourly readings had equalled those of yesterday, and the temperature threatened to exceed the 95 degree record of the two previous days until the clouds appeared. Like readings were reported throughout the Central States, the highest being 100 degrees at Peru, HI. The shower was on short duration in Chicago's downtown loop district.

The sun was shining brightly once more when the National League Brooklyn Chicago baseball game was called off thirty blocks away on account of rain. A cool area was moving in from the west, however, and forecasters Predicted further rain tonight with smperatures around 80 tomorrow and in the normal seventies by Saturday. The break in the heat wave found a total of more than a score of deaths attributed to the unprecedented rise in temperature, due, it was said, to a lack of contact between a high pressure area in the south and a low area In the north. GOTHAM IN HEAT GRIP NEW YORK, Sept. 15 VA.P )AU local heat records for September 15 were broke ntoAy when the mercury officially soared to 90 degrees at 3 o'clock this afternoon.

The previous hlhg temperature record for the day was established in 1915 when 88 degrees was officially registered. Only one prostration was reported. This aws due, according to weather bureau officials, to the fate that the humidity remained remarkably low. THREE BREAK JAIL BUTLER, Sept. 15 (A.P.).
