6 Thursday, July 24, 1958 Redlands Daily Facts 'Angel Of Bataan' Makes Home Here Wife Of Air "orce Genera Still An Author By FRANCES MORT In World War II Juanita Redmond Hipps was called "The An-j gel of I Today slie is the wife of a distinguished Air Force general, mother of a nine year old son. homemaker and hostess. I And she is 'still an author. Reccmly I visited with her at, the lovely home of the Hipps fam -l ily on Sunset drive, east of Ross -l niont. I There'I found new facts of thiSj beautiful and interesting woman, i But her story begins with the war days and comes forward.

Let the editors of 1 Colliers magazine tell that phase in the. concise thumbnail publish- i ed May 13, 1944: Juanita Redmond, the nurse on the cover, has seen as much war as most of our sol-, diers. The -hows her re-' ceiving her wings, the emblem of a flight nurse. Thrice Decorated she wears two Oak Leaves lor service on Bataan and Corrigedor. "In her popular book, 'I Served on Bataan, Miss Redmond told of the heroid work of the nurses dur-' ing the dreadful siege, how they labored under fire to care for the ever-growing casualty list, mak-' ing the best of inadequate equipment, and starvation rations.

I at last she and 11 other nurses were evacuated to Australia." Heroine's Welcome "Recently she has earned her wings for successfully completing the flight nurses course. "When she visits her home at Swansea, South Carolina, she gets a heroine's welcome." But todaj', 16 years after her ordeal in the Philippines, she does not regard herself as "The Angel of "There were 68 'angels' on Bataan." she says. "I was only one. I merely did what anyone would have done under the circumstances." Greatness in Waiting As I talked further with this modest lady I reached a conclusion: Bataan was not the reason for her greatness. It was but the occasion.

Greatness was within her, waiting for the need to call it forth. Tills is evidenced by the most chapter in her life. The place was Okinawa, where her husband served for the past three years. The people were Japanese. And that is the heart of the matter.

Bitterness for Japanese Japanese? They were the con- fjuerors of the Philippines. In her book she told of the bombing of an army hospital she regarded as mass murder. Chapter and verse she detailed the horrors of her experiences. Thirteen years later, because of her husband's assignment, she would have to live among Japanese on Okinawa. "At first, I felt I simply could not go there," she recalls.

"I could rot face the Japanese, I thought. But I went." Understanding Through Service Woman of strong character that she is, Juanita Hipps made up her mind to go among the people in search of understanding. Her search was not made passively, but through active service. "Since her arrival in September 1955," said an Okinawa cer's wives publication, "Our honorary president, Mrs. William G.

Hipps, has been dedicated to helping others. "Without regard for her own convenience, she has assisted and participated in not only the accomplishments of our club, but many other Air Force and island activities as well. Visited Hospitals "She has spent many hours visiting Okinawan hospitals, schools and needy Ryukuan groups. Yet, she still manages to be the perfect hostess, entertaining countless distinguished visitors to the islands." That's what the magazine said. But this is what Juanita Hipps commented: "After working with the Ryukuans for three years, need for understanding was answered.

"I was enriched a thousand fold." Inspires Second Book That is the explanation of the beautiful Japanese antiques in the home of this former army nurse who felt she could never forgive the Japanese for the atrocities on Bataan. It is also, the source of her inspiration for the book she is now preparing. As an author she has much source material in her thick scrap books. They are not filled with stories of her famed role but with pictures revealing the needs of the Okinawans, the Ryukuans and the Formosans. San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors yesterday strongly opposed the acquisition of 40,000 acres of the Mojave Desert, near Johannesburg, by the Air Force.

The military spokesmen said the land is needed to insure public safety in an expanded training program for existing facilities at Cuddeback Gunnery Range. The range and the proposed additional desert land lies about 10 miles southeast of Johannesburg. Supervisors lodged strong objections against military acquisition of lands that otherwise bring taxes to the county treasury. "Too much has been taken away from us already," charged board chairman S. 'Wesley Break.

Supervisors had previously indicated they would protest the Air Force plan since the range would kill proposed state park plans for the in Indian history and scenic beauty. The enlarged range would cut into the county's master highway plan that now calls for a primary county road and U.S. 395 freeway to pass through the area. Supervisors also complained that the Air Force range would almost join an area the Navy has proposed to acquire northwest of Barstow for expanded gunnery test ranges. The Air Force reported that out of the 40,000 acres, 12,287 are privately owned.

The 'Victorville Base is the prime user of the Cuddeback Range. aOY ELECTROCUTED KOSCIUSKO, Miss.
