Ida PM THE RECORD, THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 19, 1987 B-9 30,000 allocated to Cooley Domjy House lower ooromiiB eonttie line. raie i mo By Gorge Alfano Correspondent WEST MILFORD A portrait of the Cooley House will hang this year in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, but the house may be demolished by then if the building is not moved. With that in mind, the township council last night voted 3-2 to commit $30,000 to moving the house to county-owned Camp Hope property. The offer is contingent on the Passaic County freeholders' matching the donation, and the private donors' paying the remainder of the cost Mayor Stewart Perry said he had estimates of between $73,000 and $96,000 to move the home, which belonged to 19th-century artist Jasper Francis Cropsey.

Cropsey lived in the Greenwood Lake home, and was a painter of the Hudson River School and a noted architect Built by pioneer family The home was built by the Cooley family, one of West Milford's pioneer families. If the house isn't moved, West Milford developer Alan Hughes plans to destroy it to build 15 town houses on the 2.5-acre site. Perry said people have only recently realized the historical significance of Cropsey's art He said the Metropolitan Museum is planning an exhibition of Cropsey work this year. Councilman Arthur Mildner joined Perry and Councilman Charles Slawinsky in voting to commit money. Councilman Peter Gillen, who joined Edwin Aldrich in voting no, said his decision was a reluctant one.

He said $30,000 equals a full tax point Perry had hoped the freeholders would pick up the cost of moving the house. He hopes last night's action will spur the county governing board to match the donation. Hurry. Because the lines are getting longer at Einstein Moomjy. But he noted the freeholders also have to consider earmarking money for other preservation projects such as Dey Mansion and Lambert Castle. In other business, Township Administrator Carrol F. Pickens said property owners should receive their new tax evaluations this week. Pickens said Brody-Chaiken Associates mailed the notices Tuesday. He cautioned homeowners against multiplying the new assessment by the 1986 tax rate of $7.25 per $100 of assessed property value.

Pickens said the tax rate will be adjusted because of the revaluation, and probably will be lower. Firehouse is funded inLodi LODI The borough council has adopted a pair of ordinances allocating nearly $400,000 in federal funding to capital projects. Following a public hearing last night the council allocated reserved Community Development funds totaling $234,000 for work on firehouses. Some of the total will go to repair the roof of the Kennedy Street Firehouse, which has been leaking for at least six years. Some is earmarked for improvements to the heating systems of the Liberty Street and Wester-velt Place firehouses.

Broken windows at the sites also will be replaced. About $100,000 of the firehouse total is to go toward construction of a firehouse at Union Street and Memorial Drive. Last month, the council hired Joseph Vallone Architecture of New York City to prepare plans for the building, whose cost is estimated at $600,000. Mayor Tony Luna has said plans to raise the rest from community donations, particularly from the borough's chemical and other manufacturing companies. The second capital ordinance authorizes use of about $158,000 in Community Development funds for a storm drain and storm-sewer improvements at Vreeland Avenue.
