13 THE SCR'ANTON REPUBLICAN, FRIDAY. OCTOBER 9, 1936 "Lost Battalion" Vets Will Attend Reunion Bridge Logic water for several days before the big advance which routed the German Army in the deciding battle of the World War. During the siege the lost soldiers were subjected to continuous fire from the enemy. An attendance of 200 is expected at the reunion. Today's Contract Problem With no adverse bidding, how should East and West proceed to reach the proper final contract on their cards? Several veterans of the "Lost Battalion" will attend the annual reunion of the 311th Machine Gun Battalion, 79th Division, at Hotel Casey tomorrow night.

Two companies, surrounded by the Germans in the Argonne after being flanked, made up the famous "Lost Battalion." The companies were without food and Pumpkin Recipes Sought in Contest The Food Editor, this week, is asking for recipes involving the use of pumpkin, and also for a variety of recipes for Welsh dishes. She is asking that they be sent in to reach her by Wednesday night. So generous has been the response to the request for these weekly recipes that it now becomes necessary to keep a week ahead of the game. Therefore, on Friday, October 1'8, the prize winning recipes will be thoie submitted American people pay more in federal, state, and local taxes than they do for food, rent, clothing and other living expenses. McKENNEY One of the things upon which modern bidding methods place much stress is the necessity of finding a "fit" in suits before either player gives a force. Bitter experience with heavy penalties has taught contract players the importance of knowing in what suit a hand can be played before the bidding reaches too high a level. This is one reason why almost all bridge players nowadays plan the one over one, in the early stages, and why jump bids are so significant and always imply a "fit." The last trump was picked up and the rest of the hearts played. The losing spade in dummy was discarded on the ace of diamonds, and the grand slam was in. While there are other roads to the grand slam, the bidding cf Miss Hall and Miller was very fine.

Note that East, Miller, did not force on the first round. The reason was that no fit had yet been developed. Equally, West did not force on the second round, but contented herself with the simple bid of two clubs. She had a singleton in her partner's bid suit. After the club bid, however, East could force.

West then showed the spade control with a bid of three spades, confident that her partner had a "fit" in either clubs or diamonds. When East jumped to five clubs, sne knew where the "fit" was, and bid the grand slam. The opening lead of the club five was won by West with the nine. The singleton heart was led.
