SPORTS MONDAY The Vancouver Sun, Monday, September 20, 1993 RACING D4 iJlilfi ID Pilgrim's Treasure takes honors at Mating Game her lifetime earnings to almost $160,000 for Pilgrim Stable. Jack Diamond's Senate Appointee, a winner of four stakes at Ex Park this year, captured the $50,000 E.B. Johnson for older fillies and mares Sunday at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif. Senate Appointee, horse of the year in B.C. in 1992 and a winner six times in as many starts here this year, defeated favored Southern Truce by VA lengths.

The Kentucky-bred Storm Cat filly is now 19 for 27 lifetime with earnings of over $480,000. Peteski, winner of the Canadian triple crown, added the Grade II Mol-son Export Million for 3-year-olds to his list of conquests Sunday afternoon at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack. Peteski, an Ontario-bred son of Affirmed trained by Roger Attfield, covered the 1 miles in 1:49.2 for his seventh win from 10 lifetime starts. Ridden by Craig Perret, he out-finished stablemate Cheery Knight and Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero to earn $600,000 and up his lifetime earnings to $1.2 million. Peteski paid $5.60 at Ex Park, which simulcast the race Sam Krasner took Humpty's Hoe-down wire-to-wire Saturday afternoon to take the $41,300 Inlet for 3-year-olds by two lengths over Run Wolf Run.

It was the 14th stakes-winner of the season for Krasner. Mohan Jawl, chair of the new Pacific Racing Association, is scheduled to address members of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association tonight. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the Dogwood Room at the PNE. DENNIS FESER Vancouver Sun You can almost set your calendar by Pilgrim's Treasure.

Although she runs well for most of the year, she isn't quite good enough. Then trainer Dave Forster leaves on a buying trip and Pilgrim's Treasure wins the Mating Game at Exhibition Park. Last year, as a 3-year-old, she skipped through the slop to finish eight lengths in front of Delta Colleen. Pilgrim's Treasure repeated the feat Sunday afternoon, finding a little extra in the lane for Aureliano Noguez to turn back Avant's Gold by to lengths. The favored Maryinthemorning, winner of the recent Vanity, was another neck back in the 1 Ve-mile event completed in 1:44 on a fast strip.

a very honest mare," said Teri Forster, who also saddled Pilgrim's Treasure to win the 1992 Mating Game while husband Dave was in Kentucky. very rarely runs a bad race. With her speed, people think she is a sprinter. But her best races have been at a distance." Pilgrim's Treasure, a Florida-bred by the Northern Dancer sire Pilgrim, was purchased for $6,000 as a weanling at sale in Kentucky. She started only four times as a juvenile and developed nicely last year, capping her sophomore season with the 7-to-1 upset of older mares in the Mating Game.

As the third choice in the field of seven Sunday, she refused to relinquish the lead after setting the interior fractions. With a $21,010 share of the $34,300 purse, Pilgrim's Treasure increased VANCOUVER'S Rick Celebrini fights his way through a group of Los SOCCER IAN SMITHVancouver Sun Angeles Salsa defenders Salsa shooters singe 86ers in controversial semi-final EOT RIVERSIDE GOLF CENTRES uUl.T Hurry Some items limited selection not all items at all locations Must Sell-Off Thousands of: Golf Clubs, Bags, Carts, Putters, Etc. Savings Up To 50 down by Feuer on the edge of the Salsa penalty area. Mobilio had the presence of mind to lay the ball off for Mitchell, who hit an open net to give Vancouver a 2-1 lead. Sawtell chose to show only a yellow card caution to Feuer for a foul that clearly appeared to be a sending-off offence.

But his most controversial decision was made virtually on the stroke of full-time. He whistled Celebrini for a foul on Paulinho that set up the game-tying free kick a rising, 20-yard howitzer that struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the goal line. 86ers were adamant that the free kick should not have been awarded. "It wasnt even close to a foul," insisted a grim-faced Celebrini. "Paulinho turned on the ball, I was going with him and there was a certain amount of body contact We were shoulder-to-shoulder and he took a dive." The APSL scoring champion offered a different version.

"Not only was it a foul, No. 2 (Cele-brini) was fouling me the whole match," Paulinho said. Scoreless in sudden-death overtime, the teams went to the infamous shootout Paul Wright Richard Ryer-son and Paulinho scored against Dolan while only Carl Valentine could beat Feuer. The Salsa will meet Colorado in the APSL championship game on Oct. 2.

Colorado beat Tampa Bay 1-0 on Sunday in the other semi-final. now turns his full-time attention to coaching Canada's national teams. "I'm not sure what the answer is," he added. "Maybe we should have neutral referees in the playoffs. It seems that a home-town ref will often bend over backwards to make sure he isn't seen as a homer." Sawtell's many controversial decisions aside, there was no doubt about the entertainment value of the electrifying late summer afternoon match.

The 86ers drew first blood on a Mobilio penalty kick awarded after Muirhead was pulled to the turf by Salsa midfielder Mike Fox, in the 40th minute. Mobilio confidently slotted home his 86ers-leading 11th tally of the season past towering six-foot-six L.A. goalkeeper Ian Feuer. Always looking the more dangerous side when they had the ball at their talented, quicksilver feet, the Salsa ironically drew even on a header goal in the 68th minute. Defender Danny Pena tucked a Dale Ervine corner kick just inside the far post on a play that caught several 86ers ball-watching.

"We may have been guilty of that (ball-watching), but I'm not pointing fingers," said goalkeeper Paul Dolan, who forced the corner with a brilliant diving save on Thor Lee's 24-yard rocket Sawtell was most conspicuous late in the second half. Mobilio gathered in Celebrini's through pass in the 80th minute and was blatantly taken DAN STINSON Vancouver Sun It would be so easy to pin the Vancouver 86ers' Saturday playoff loss on the referee. After all, Bob Sawtell did not enjoy one of his better performances at Swangard Stadium and that's putting it charitably. But the Surrey official didn't miss the net on a 75-yard, clear-cut breakaway as Doug Muirhead did late in the second half. He didn't strike home a magnificent free kick to tie the American Professional Soccer League sudden-death semi-final at 2-2 in injury time.

That was left to the Los Angeles Salsa's Brazilian midfielder Paulin-ho. And Sawtell didnt fail to score on three of four 86ers' shootout attempts, leaving that particular misfortune to Dale Mitchell, Rick Celebrini and Domenic Mobilio. In the wake of a 3-2 defeat 3-1 in the shootout tiebreaker 86ers had plenty to say about Sawtell, echoing the indignation of 5,027 fans who witnessed the most controversial postseason contest in the franchise's seven-year history. Worth noting, however, is that Bob Lenarduzzi presented the most philosophical viewpoint in his last game as 86ers' head coach. "Some of the referee's decisions were a joke, but if I say too much at this point it's only going to sound like sour grapes," said Lenarduzzi, who Wallace win tightens NASCAR race Rusty Wallace went from spoiler to winner to contender Sunday when he won the crash-filled Split-Fire 500 stock car race in Dover, Del.

Wallace, who started from the pole, won his second consecutive NASCAR race by overcoming a two-lap deficit and edging Ken Schrader by less than one-half a second. He won $77,645 and now trails Dale Earnhardt by 181 points with six races left in the series championship. Wallace was blamed for a mul-ticar crash that ruined Earnhardt's race. He then went on to beat Schrader and Darrell Waltrip in a 21-lap sprint out of the record 16th caution of the day. Killer crash One man died and at least 21 people were injured when a race car crashed into a pit area at Stockton 99 Speedway at Stockton, Calif.

Driver Ben Twisselman hit a retaining wall after apparently losing control coming out of a turn during the Saturday night race, according to officials. His car skidded over a chain-link safety fence and landed in a pit area, witnesses said. Twisselman was not injured. Track officials said the victim was a member of driver Mike David's pit crew. All the injured people were either drivers or members of pit crews.

Cochrane a winner Former Olympian Nigel Cochrane was the over-all winner of the Canadian Offshore Keel-boat championships that concluded Sunday at the Royal Newfoundland Yacht Club in St John's. Cochrane, 28, of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club conducted a match-racing seminar and finished second in the week-long regatta's final event, a three-day, eight-team match race. Quebec's entry skippered by Peter Hall of Montreal's Royal St Lawrence Yacht Club won the event involving 35- and 38-foot boats in a 30-minute short course test of tactics and crew work. Sydor second Paola Pezzo of Italy won a surprise gold medal Saturday in the women's cross-country race at the 46-country world moutain biking championships in Metabief, France. Alison Sydor of North Vancouver, second at last year's worlds and third on the World Cup circuit this season, was fourth.

Pezzo, 19th on the World Cup this season, clocked the muddy 33 kilometre course in two hours, 43:04 minutes. Jenny Longo of the U.S. was second in 2:44:24, Ruthy Matthes, also of the U.S., third in 2:50:36 and Sydor followed in 2:52:44. Bourbonnais in lead Claude Bourbonnais led from pole to finish to win the Player's Ltd.Toyota Atlantic championship race at Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway on Saturday and take the lead in the points standings with two races remaining in the season. Bourbonnais of Ile-Perrot completed the 60-lap race at the Pennsylvania tri-oval in 26 minutes, 12.375 seconds at an average speed of 221.166 kph.

It was his seventh victory of the season and 13th of his career, equalling the late Gilles Vil-leneuve in total victories. Bourbonnais needs one more victory to tie Mark Dismore for most Atlantic victories. Coach in trouble Deportivo de La Coruna humiliated Real Madrid 4-0 on Saturday in a game that could spell doom for Real Madrid's beleaguered coach Benito Floro after only three games in Spanish soccer's First Division. Real Madrid's loss dropped it to 1-0-2 in league play and could be Floro's last as coach. Following last week's 3-1 loss at home to First Division newcomer Valladolid, a national sports daily reported that team president Ramon Mendoza gave Floro an ultimatum: start winning or start packing.

Cuba to forfeit Cuba will have to forfeit its opening-round volleyball match against Canada in this week's world championship qualifying tournament because of visa problems that will not allow the Cuban team to arrive in New Orleans until Wednesday. Six teams will play a "dual" pool series of matches beginning today. Semi-finals will be played next weekend. The U.S. State Department on Friday denied an appeal that would have allowed the Cuban team to arrive as scheduled today.

Cuba, considered the tournament favorite, was scheduled to play Canada on Tuesday.
