J. Moran, Executive Director, Wascana Centre Authority promise kept this is the reason so called "frost boils" develop in roads during the spring of the year. As a result of the development of a small ice lens in the roadbed, free water is at. tracted to this ice lens which continues to develop in considerable size causing the heaving of the road and subsequent deterioration when Miss Hope candidate is named the ice lens melts. This affinity of water to ice crystals seems to explain the reason for the large cracks which are observed in our heavy clay soils in the spring of the year.

As a result of moisture movement, we experience some degree of soil shrinkage. Since frost penetration begins at the soil surface and moves down. it is not unreasonable to find good soil moisture levels just beneath the surface in the spring of the year. As a result of frost action, therefore, we find that there is some alleviation of soil compaction, a greater concentration of soil moisture in the upper layers of the soil in the spring and a more granular structured soil in the spring. It must be recognized that this soil heaving is greatly accentuated on our heavy clay soils and that, in addition to the beneficial affects of this heaving, we may also experience some injury to herbaceous perennials.

trees and shrubs by the ripping of the root This particular problem can be controlled extensively through the use of soil mulches which tend to stabilize extremes in freezing and thawing. Ile did show several "ankle gramrs" for co a i Is and evening lours but they were well past the midi or midcalf length. More than one-third of his collection were pants. Halley called his pants outfits TNTtunic and trousersshowing almost all the pants with tunic tops, most of which were belted. There was also one full length sleeveless coat in a turquoise and black design shown with black crepe panis and tunic. His lady-like dresses with slightly lifted waist lines were ail shown with small, cropped jackets.

Ilk shorter hems were applauded at the American Designer Showings. Halley said he prefers daytime clothes above the knee but that he wanted to give the customer a choice. He said dresses would be shipped to the stores to cover the knee "leaving the ultimate decision to the individual customer, her man and her mirror." The designer, known for his expensive and elegant couture line, priced the Claudia line at $90 to WO. When the first heavy frosts of fall occur and a blanket of snow covers the earth surface, outdoor gardening loses much of its significance until spring thaws prevail and the frost leaves the soil. Nevertheless, it should be recognized that not everything about our winters is bad and that outdoor gardening enthusiasts derive some significant benefits from our winter conditions.

It is true that the persistent cold winds and relatively low temperatures of winter can cause varying degrees of injury to both the above and below ground portions of plant material. However, these particular problems are offset by the beneficial effect of frost action to our heavy clay soil. It is this frost action which plays a most important part each year in manipulating the structural characteristics of our soils in such a manner that they more closely resemble those of an ideal growing medium in the spring of the year. There are a number of factors which can lead to compaction of our clay soils resulting in a condition of poor pore space and thus upsetting the soil particle, air and water relationship. Soil compaction may result from the weight of mechanical equipment run over the soil.

It may also result from a considerable amount of foot traffic or may even be due to the continuous application of irrigable water, particularly if the water droplets have not been broken down into a very fine spray. Frost penetration into the soil is responsible for soil heaving and thus breaks up the tightly compacted particles. I suppose it might be more accurate to say that heaving is due to alternate freezing and thawing. It is also interesting to note that free water in the soil has a strong affinity to ice particles. It is my understanding that Aliss Charlene Werbeski of Montmartre, a first year student at Thunder Bay Regional School of Nursing, has been named as the Ontario city's candidate for the title of Miss Hope 1971.

The Miss Hope competition is held annually by the Ontario Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society. Miss Werbeski was chosen by a Thunder Bay panel of judges from three candidates who qualified by speaking to a gathering of volunteer Cancer Society workers. Candidates were required to speak on topics relating to some phase of cancer nursing, the cancer problem, and the Cancer Society. Miss Werbeski now faces competiton from the candidate selected by Kenora. Ont.

district, The selected winner at the district level will then compete in January against 14 other winners from eastern Ontario centres. In addition to representiing the Cancer Society at various functions and through the news media, the final winner will receive a $200 award and xvill have her travelling expenses paid by the Ontario Cancer Society. First and second runners-up will receive awards of $100 and $75.
