ulst ecu AVA1WJGJ V- C6 The Vancouver Sun. Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1988 ENTERTAINMENT Blanck offers wry humor in drawings Sutherland films around delay in Bethune movie Works look like mysterious planets tf III! In the self-portraits, Blanck drives her point home by including her mother and four-year-old daughter Bekka, suggesting the intertwining of the generations, and surrounding the figures with forms from nature, lush greenery and thorny briars. It's a hippy-dippy sentiment hey, man, like we're all one but Blanck's treatment is so fresh and exuberant that you can't help but feel her excitement at discovering nature's glorious interdependency. Also on view at the BAG this month is a selection of Inuit sculpture, and several of Vancouver sculptor Severino Trinca's intriguing carvings and assemblages.

Blanck will talk about her work at the BAG, Jan. 2 1 at 8 p.m., and a tour of her exhibit, led by curator Ted Lindberg, is planned for Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. Phone 291-9441 for more information. American photographer Minor White's startling image of a hard-hatted sandblaster, digging what appears to be his own grave, is one of the highlights of the Vancouver Art Gallery's current main-floor show of 51 contemporary photographs.

Selected from the the gallery's permanent collection, the works here include traditional fine-art photography (such as White's), as well as experimental work by Astrid Klein, Bill Jones and Roy Arden. Don't miss Manuel Alvarez Bravo's striking black-and-white prints, seven scenes of Mexican daily life spiced with a soupcon of portrait in chalk Canadian Press Right on schedule, Donald Sutherland is playing a doctor in the movies only the guy in white is not the expected Dr. Norman Bethune, the Canadian hero of the Chinese Revolution. Sutherland was to have spent January re-creating Bethune's early days in Montreal for the $16-million Canadian movie epic, Bethune: The Making of a Hero. Instead, he's in San Antonio, to star in Wall Time, the first American movie by British director Hugh (Chariots of Fire) Hudson.

And rather than ministering to the Chinese, Sutherland is playing a therapist helping troubled teenagers, one of whom is played by Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys rock group. It's not the first such role for Sutherland, who shot to stardom with his wacky portrayal of MASH's army surgeon Hawkeye Pierce. In the Canadian movie Threshold, he gave a superb performance as an anguished surgeon who implants an artificial heart. While Sutherland's in Texas, the Bethune film will get a script rewrite necessitated by some of the problems encountered during last year's "TOP 10 OF 1987" Ian Caddetl GEORGIA STRAIGHT NICK NOLTE NOMINEE BEST ACTOR GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS Nick Nolte WEEDS Fed whal it's likr from the imhle. INFO. 291-WINS LIBERAL BLACKJACK taS 1 ROULETTE Road warriors hunt for laughs as they try to avoid the 'hell gigs' necessarily the assumption, but the possibility." comedians say they aren't the types clowns. "Some were," Stebbins said. to be rather ordinary people and reserved." household names, though Stebbins of his subjects Mike MacDonald, Kennedy are among the best-known comics. By HELEN BRANSWELL Canadian Press CALGARY They call themselves the road warriors.

They move from city to city, working smoky cabarets, hoping for the big laughs, the great audiences, dreading the "hell gigs." They're stand-up comedians and they're the subject of a study by Robert Stebbins, a University of Calgary sociology professor. He's looking at how the comics are hooked on making people laugh, and at the toll it takes on other areas of their lives. Road warriors is a name coined by the comics to describe their lives. "You can't spend much time in a place, even like Toronto, because everybody hears you," Stebbins said. "The comic in a sense has worn out his welcome at that point and he has to travel." Stebbins said life on the road either touring independent clubs or working the Yuk-Yuk chain of cabarets is a hard way to make a living.

For one thing, it wrecks love lives. Stebbins has repeatedly heard that complaint "it's hard to maintain a relationship when you're apart" from the 25 comics he's interviewed across the from blue-collar backgrounds and troubled shoot in China. "We always wanted to have a break anyway," says Filmline producer Nicholas Clermont, noting that the Bethune epic will move through several seasons on film. Clermont says he's delighted that Sutherland could do another movie during the Bethune break. "It suits us quite well; after all, he started working on this film in March of last year that's almost a full year on one movie." Bethune, a co-production of Canada, China and France, will resume shooting at the end of February.

The, location will be Montreal or Spain, depending on the availability of French co-star Jane Birkin. Bethune is directed by Canada's Phillip Borsos (The Grey Fox) and scripted by Ted Allen. The current delay destroys the film's chances of being shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May, but Clermont hopes to have it ready for Toronto's Festival of Festivals in September. To be remembered: it took Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci four years to complete his opulent epic, The Last Emperor, the first western film shot in China with full government co-operation. 7. By ELIZABETH GODLEY In one of Nora Blanck's self-portraits, on view now at the Burnaby Art Gallery, the artist clutches a bouquet of paintbrushes in one hand and a cluster of diaper pins in the other. Presented with wry humor, the image painter as harried mother suggests the theme of Blanck's current show of 21 drawings, in colored chalk on paper. In all these works, six self-portraits and 16 abstracts, this Vancouver artist is highlighting connections between the individual and the world at large, asking us to see infinity in dividing cells and microscopic protozoa. Because her works are all untitled, it is difficult to describe them here.

But some of the non-representational pieces composed of strokes and jabs of color and shapes that seem to swirl and swarm look like mysterious planets and asteroids swinging through deep space, while others refer to sexual reproduction and the beginnings of human life. Just days before the candidate filing period opens in Carmel, the biggest question sweeping the seaside community is whether Mayor Clint Eastwood will run for office again. "Probably, off the top of my head," Eastwood recently told the Monterey newspaper Herald. "But I really haven't given it a thought." The actor said he has some projects he would like to complete, including solving the city's parking problems and working out water supply allocation with the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District.

Eastwood, 57, was swept into office by a 3-1 margin in April 1986. The filing opens Thursday. Up for grabs in the April 12 election is the mayor's two-year seat and two four-year council seats. The actor is best known for his "spaghetti western" movies and his portrayal of Dirty Harry. The filing period closes Feb.
