Directed by Charles Sturridge. England. Touay, 7 p.m.

Hollywood; Sunday, 2 p.m. Hollywood. turns the tables on his countrymen. The Japanese powerlords here fight among themselves and trust no one, while the motley crew in the apartment block could be doing ads for the global village. There are other digs, too.

Itta's Sony tape player screws up on him. And he keeps revealing himself as the nincompoop he is under his silk shirts, as when he makes the point that "Japanese are not Asian. Japanese are white!" Otomo's sense of humor doesn't always translate very well, and the film has a bit of an adolescent yuk-yuk feeling about it. But it looks cool, and has a nice subversive edge. World Apartment Horror is preceded by a short that sounds like fun.

It's called The Master of Shiatsu, and the festival program says; it "takes traditional Japanese massage into the realm of molecular engineering." She spends most of the movie mooning about, looking as though she needs a self-esteem workshop more than a weekend of forbidden lust with little brother. "Stop me please," she keeps telling Richard (Clive Owen, who looks like Chris Isaak) every time they start making love. He doesn't, she won't, and-their stop-and-go game gets pretty darned tiresome.

She chases him, she runs away, she chases him, and she's such a drip it's impossible to figure out why he doesn't just tell her to get out of his life. Besides incest, Close My Eyes seems to be commenting on AIDS and the single life, the depletion of the ozone layer and the disastrous state of urban development in London. I just couldn't figure out what the messages were. Rickman is great. The movie is ponderous and pretentious.

Elizabeth Aird PAIRS: Giovanni Guidelli, Helen Mirren in Where Angels Fear to Tread (left); Jeff Perry, William Petersen in Hard Promises (below) the screen, and like its predecessors, A Passage to India, A Room With a View, and Maurice, it is a rich, textured and sensitive film. Set in turn-of-the-century England and Italy, we follow the widowed Lilia Herriton (Helen Mirren) to Monteriano, a small town in Tuscany. There to escape suffocating English life, she falls in love with and marries a young Italian stud, Gino (Giovanni Guidelli). Accompanying Lilia on her trip is her young companion, Caroline Abbott (Helena Bonham Carter). When Lilia's in-laws hear of the relationship, they send out son and lawyer Philip (Rupert Graves), and later Harriet (Judy Davis), to salvage the family name and reputation.

Director Charles Sturridge, who also directed a Handful of Dust and Brideshead Revisited in much the same way, establishes real people who undergo a slightly absurd change of circumstance. The changes are so subtle, and the mood so understated, that without a strong cast it would fall flat. But every actor turns in a solid, balanced and detailed performance. HANK GOODNESS for Alan Rickman. When he's on screen, Close My Eyes is worth but is lots of fun in a weird way.

The "world apartment" is a crumbling dump in Tokyo that's home to an assortment of men from China, India, Taiwan, Pakistan and the Philippines. The Black Dragon Gang owns the building, and it wants to get rid of the tenants. So the boss sends in Itta, a groovy guy with cool clothes and a hot head. "I am yakuza man," Itta tells some of the guys. They aren't impressed.

Least impressed of all are the spirits that haunt the derelict building. They drive Itta crazy, but an exorcist saves the day in the nick of time. World Apartment Horror is really about racism and the power of rich landowners over small lives. Direc-torco-writer Katsuhiro Otomo (who did the animation hit, Akira) neatly Chris, grab a brain. Both guys are twits.

After forcing the audience to watch this painful struggle, she finally makes a decision. God bless her. While the script is insipid, in the hands of a good director it may have had potential. Spacek plays Chris Coalter, a woman torn between two men. One is her ex-husband, Joey (William Petersen): a beefcake man-boy with bar tricks aplenty and a swagger that would make John Wayne look like a weenie. The other is her new fiance, Walt (Brian Kerwin), a goof who drives a pale blue Oldsmobile and laughs with his shoulders. Both, of course, have a heart of gold and deeply care for Chris. But who, just who, is poor Chris going to pick? Well, after an hour and a half, who cares? The movie goes on kiss, break up, back together, regrets and on.
