con The Vancouver Sun, Tuesday, July 21, 1987 NEWS A8 Pnobindsniaii talks at action ii Balby case Est OWEN Valley paper wins top honors Several B.C. community newspapers will be honored for excellence at the Canadian Community Newspapers Association annual convention in Newfoundland this week. The Maple Ridge News took top honors over-all in the Better Newspapers Competition with five firsts, two seconds, two thirds and a blue ribbon. Its entry in the circulation tabloid class won first in all-around, editorial, front page, Christmas edition and best sports page. The Chilliwack Progress won the best editorial page competition in the broadsheet competition for circulations above 10,000, and the Comox District Free Press won a first in the same class for its front page.

Other B.C. newspapers receiving awards are the Salmon Arm Observer, the North and West Vancouver North Shore News, The Port Hardy Gazette, the Sidney Review and the 100 Mile House Free Press. There are 650 Canadian community newspapers in the CCNA, including 81 from B.C. By LARRY STILL Provincial Ombudsman Stephen Owen says he is reluctant to investigate the case of "Baby who was apprehended before birth, because the matter is already before the courts. 5 In a telephone interview Monday, Owen acknowledged receipt of a complaint in which a group called the Committee for Maternal Autonomy accused child care authorities of an abuse of power.

will meet with the committee to discuss the complaint," Owen said. "We have not started an investigation nor will we unless the complaint is substantially different from the matter now before the court." The committee, backed by the B.C. Human Rights Coalition, includes pro-choice in abortion groups, women's groups, a trade union, native Indian groups and a coalition of persons suffering from acquired immune deficiency syndrome. It has asked the ombudsman to investigate whether the ministry of social services misused child care legislation to compel Baby R's mother to undergo a caesarean against her wishes. Beverley Bond, a BCHRC member, said she was pleased Owen was receptive to a meeting.

The committee's complaint parallels a family court custody suit in which the circumstances of Baby R's apprehension and subsequent birth was examined by Judge Brian Davis, Beyond Popes and Gurus and Words I am a Roman Catholic, and attended the three events of the Rev. Swaggart Vancouver crusade. What the world is witnessing through various ministry outreaches (television, crusades, etc.) is a number of popes each claiming direct or indirect inheritance of the leadership of all Christians from the first leader, Peter. One is as dogmatic as the other, using the Bible as a base but interpreting it as they in conscience see fit. What is most promising beyond Rev.

Swaggart's music and sermons, the latter heavily laden with criticism of other Christians and religions, were the closing moments of the crusade, the speaking in tongues. These mostly unintelligible utterances, characterized by some other Fundamentalists as gibberish but found also in a variety of Christian denominations, point up a basic fact of human experience: the limitations of our everyday words which fail when confronted with the mystery of existence and life. Indeed, all is mystery. This is a point stressed also, for instance, by Zen Buddhisms' koans (problems unsolvable by logical thinking). We are thus brought once again to the mysticism of both the West and the East, and the point where all must eventually meet, namely, the ONE GOD, the greatest mystery.

Thanks to Rev. Swaggart and his local organizers for those key final moments. Stan Smith, P.O. Box, 4372, Vancouver, B.C. V6B 3Z8 who reserved his decision to Sept.

3. The court was told the fetus was apprehended, as a "child" in need of care and protection, when the mother, 37, an alcoholic with a history of schizophrenia, refused her consent to a caesarean. Minutes before she entered the delivery room, the mother consented to the caesarean, recommended by an obstetrician who said the baby likely would die if the surgery wasn't done. The court hearing concerned an application by the superintendent of family and child service, based on the mother's "demonstrated inability" to care for her four previous children, for permanent custody of Baby R.
