14U fir" Frw Oct. 23. 75.3; NEW DODGE TRUCKS GO ON DISPLAY AT AL HARMON, INC. New V-8 truck engines, claimed to be the most efficient and advanced type ever offered in the industry, are among the seven power plants in the new C-l series of Dodge "job-rated trucks, an pihfri nounced by William S. Woolsey, sales manager-trucks, Dodge Division, Chrysler Corp.

The trucks are on display at Al Calectric's New Highgrove Plant Starts Operating (Continued From City Page) struction started on Unit 3 at year ago September. Attending the ceremonies along with Sen. Phipps were Calectric executives and employes. Said Albert Cage, Calectric president: "This is a 6 million dollar example of what a privately owner public utility is doing to meet the challenge of an unprecedented growth over its system." He also praised the firm's investors, stockholders and employes for the belief in the Harmon 635 San Ber nardino. The new v-8 engines, power clearance between the front wheels and frame, provide stabil- ity and greater maneuverability.

Dodge offers a 39-degree turning angle right or left on most of the new models, he reported. nl Lower loading heights, larger running boards, and increased driver comfort all have been built, I into the new trucks to assist driv-w ers in their work and so reduce labor and hauling costs. Total glass area of the C-l cab. has been increased more than 20 per cent. The new one-piece curved windshield has 951 square inches of glass area.

Shoulder area in the new cab has been increased more than 4 inches to nearly 62 inches. NEW DESIGN The new low height half-ton panel with 100 horsepower engine and 1,475 pounds payload capacity has been named the "Town Panel" because of its styling and modern design. Cargo space is 155 cubic feet and the panel is sealed against moisture and dust. of the new C-l Series is the result of both new functional design, redesigned springs, and chassis improvements which have reduced actual truck height as much as three inches on some models. This has reduced loading height to save labor costs and has brought a new low center of gravity with better road stability, Woolsey declared.

Tractor-trailer optrators will benefit, said Woolsey, from the more compact tractors which will permit the use of longer trailers while still meeting legal limits on combined tractor-trailer lengths. For example, new conventional tractors are only 102 inches long from front bumper to back of cab, thus permitting use of standard 35-foot trailers to meet 4aVfoot over-all legal length limits in every state. C.O.E. tractors have been compacted to 81 inches. Wider front treads and unique new frames, which curve in at the front wheels to create a recess for the steering gear and increase the 4 steering, more compact tractors which permit larger payloads, a new improved steering linkage, H.

I new C-l series. They include 133 horsepower in 1H, 2 and 2-ton models, 153 horsepower in 2-ton models, and 172 horsepower in 3 and 3-ton models. The new engines were designed to operate at sustained high speeds at lower cost on regular gasoline and to maintain their original power and efficiency for a much longer period without major service work, Woolsey explained. The new V-8 truck engines have a large bore and a very short stroke. Thus pistons travel a shorter distance and friction is reduced.

Cylinder walls and bearings wear less, and maintenance costs are reduced. They were placed in production only after thousands of miles of testing throughout the country on abnormal roads with heavy loads, said Woolsey. NEW FEATURE Ignition key starting is a feature of the new V-8 engines. Double-breaker distributor is a unique ignition feature of the new C-l trucks which insures high-voltage ignition at the spark plugs for a better combustion at high speeds, it was announced. Numerous improvements were wider front treads, which help in-crease maneuverability, new frames, increased driver comfort and visibility, lower loading height, better road stability, and completely -new styling are among "traditional American method of more than 75 new features in the building service installations, such! new trucks, he said.
