(Starts Wednesday, Studio) Madame Souzatska Kick-out-the-stops performance by Shirley MacLaine as a demanding, frustrating music teacher who inevitably drives her students off. Navm Chowdhry plays her latest prize, a 15-year-old pianist Mature. (Ends Tuesday at Park, starts Wednesday at Royal Centre) Married to the Mob Gangsters come oft as tacky suburbanites in this offbeat romantic comedy about a hitman's wife (Michelle Pfeifler) who grows sick of living in a house full of stolen furniture. Matthew Modine stars. Fourteen years.

lilllil V'-l snow. One of the year's best films. Mature. (Royal Centre) CD Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller Buoyant Canadian faruasy film for kids about a boy who possesses a magic stamp that allows him to travel anywhere in the world. General.

(Royal Centre, Fraser, Dolphin, Westminster Mall) Tucker Francis Ford Coppola makes his Citizen Kane. Jeff Bridges plays Preston Tucker, a maverick automaker of the 1940s who took on the big car manufacturers (and lost). Coppola directs with dazzling style. General. (Ends Sunday, Hollywood) Twins Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito play, respectively, a beach bum and hustler who learn they are fraternal twins.

Ivan Reitman directs this comedy, which has its charm despite juggling about five different plot-lines. Mature. (Granville, Dolphin, Oakridge, Coquitlam, Park Tilford. CO. Station Square, West Van, Clearbrook) U2, Rattle and Hum Stylish concert film about the world most popular rock band.

Mature. (Capitol) Watcher Tepid horror film, shot in Vancouver, in which both man-made, Sasquatch-type monster and government agents terrorize a family. Corey Haim stars. Restricted. (Granville, Scott) Without a Clue The Sherlock Holmes genre gets a comic twist: sidekick Watson (Ben Kingsley) becomes the brains of the outfit, while Holmes (Michael Caine) bumbles along.

General. (Royal Centre, Fraser, Coquitlam, Park Tilford, CO. Station Square, Scott, Clearbrook) CD Working Girl Comedy that casts Melanie Griffith as a woman climbing the corpo- a young man (Patrick Dempsey) who spends Christmas vacation with his girlfriend bizarre family in Montreal. The comic first half grows into something deeper when the visitor bonds with the grandmother of the family. Unlike most movies that change tone, this one becomes stronger for it Voted most popular film at this year Vancouver International Film Festival.

Fourteen years. (Varsity) Taxi Driver Martin Scorsese's acclaimed film of urban alienation, with Robert DeNiro as man obsessed with cleaning up a portion of New York City, and Jodie Foster as the teen hooker he focuses on. Restricted. (Sunday to Tuesday, Studio) A Taxing Woman Comedy from Japan about a tenacious female tax inspector (Nobuko Miyamoto) and her efforts to nail an unsavory businessman. Juzo Kami (The Funeral, Tampopo) directs.

Subtitled. Mature. (Ridge) Tequila Sunrise Drama in which two former friends one, a cop (Kurt Russell), the other a dope dealer (Mel Gibson) find themselves in conflict Michelle Pfeifler is the woman in the middle. Fourteen years. (Capitol, Richport, Park Royal, Station Square, Lougheed Mall.

Guildford, Willowbrook) The Terminator Violent, campy action film in which a futuristic villain (Arnold Schwarzenegger) comes back in time to destroy everything in his path. Restricted. (Sunday to Tuesday, Studio) The Thin Blue Line Errol Morris' mesmerizing documentary about a murder in Texas, for which it appears the wrong man was sentenced to Death Row. Morris (who made the pet cemetery documentary Gates of Heaven) has a way of getting his interview subjects to reveal more about themselves than they might want to unnatural movie, with every gesture and tine of dialogue loaded with symbolic weight This is nostalgia at its worst. The cast also includes Bruce Dern, Marietta Hartley and Winona Ryder.

Mature. (Capitol) CD Oliver and Company Disney animation retelling the Oliver! musical with animals in the title roles. General. (Capitol, Dunbar, Park Royal, Richmond Square, Station Square, Eagle Ridge. Guildford, Willowbrook) CD Rain Man Dustin Hoffman plays an autistic man who comes into a fortune in this brilliant, beautiful film.

Tom Cruise stars as the conniving younger brother trying to get his hands on the loot Mature. (Stanley, Richmond Square, Station Square, Eagle Ridge, Guild- CDSalaarr i Bombay Tale of a 10-year-old boy who travels to Bombay and becomes hardened by street life. As haunting as Pixote, although tinged with some humor to soften the despair. Director Mira Nair won best first film award at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Subtitled.

Mature. (Bay) Scrooged Bill Murray plays a cranky, power-crazy TV network executive in this uneven comic update of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Watch for Ghostbuster-style special effects. Mature. (Capitol, Park Royal, Richmond Square, Lougheed Mall, Station Square, Guildford.

Willowbrook) The Serpent and the Rainbow B.C. author Wade Davis' book about modern-day zombies in Haiti has been made into a horror film Wes Craven. Lots of jolts, and some truly terrifying moments. Restricted. (Starts Monday, Hollywood) Some Girls Terrific comedy about i I Mil III III l.

I "h1 i i i I i OPENING DFTHE Si The Accused Coosely based on the I a a i .1 infamous pool-table rape case in Massachusetts, and slot in Vancouver, this drama stars Jodie Foster' as a rape victim and Kelly McGillis as the. prosecutor striving for justice. Foster carries the picture. Restricted. (Capitel) Amsterdamned Dutch slasher movie, in which a detective tries to stop a serial killer who murders at the rate of one victim per day.

Momque Van de Ven stars. Subtitled. Restricted. (Royat Centre) Another Woman Woody Allen directs this drama about a college professor (Gena Rowlands) who realizes her life needs enrichment, Better than September, but the movie needs, to lighten up; none of the characters seems alive. Mia Farrow, Gene Hackman, Ian Holm and Sandy Dennis also star.

Mature. (Royal Centre) Auntie Mame Rosalind Russell received an Academy Award nomination in 1958 for her role here as the liamboyant aunt of young coy. General. (Monday and Tuesday, Van couver East Babette's Feast Danish film, based on an Isak Dinesen story, about a servant who lives with two elderly sisters and serves them the meat ot their lives. The film has to do with love and longing and the importance of seizing one'i opportunities.

Subtitled. Mature. (Royal Centre) Big Outstanding comedy about a kid who wakes up one morning as an adult, with Tom Hanks in the lead role. Sure direction from Penny Marshall. Mature.

Station Square, ends Sunday at Hollywood The Big Easy A breakthrough movie for actress tnen barkm, who (many gets a star ring She plays a district attorney who falls for qooked New Orleans cop (Dennis Quaid) during murder investigation. Great dialogue and a fuller soundtrack. Fourteen years. (Wed' nesoay and Thursday, Vancouver East Bull Durham Funny, racy baseball movie which an aging groupie (Susan Saran' don) pursue? a young pitcher (Tim Robbins), even thouatvthe more attracted to the hardbit ten catcher (Kevin Costner).

The best baseball movie since Bang the Drum Slowly. Restricted. (Ends Sunday, Vancouver East) Buster Phil Collins plays Buster Edwards, one of the gang who staged Britain's multi-million dollar Great Train Robbery in 1963, The film concentrates on Buster's love for his wife June (Julie Walters), and his life on the lam. Mature. (Vancouver Centre, Station Square, Eagle Ridge, Willowbrook) Caligula Controversial, ultra-violent and semi-pornographic portrayal of ancient Rome, produced by Penthouse czar Bob Guc- cione.

You'll need a strong stomach to handle some ot the scenes. Restricted. (Ends Saturday, Studio)', Candy Mountain Low-budget road movie in which a New York musician Kevin O'Conner) drives to the Canadian Maritimes in search of a legendary guitar-maker (Harris Yulin Hough in spots, charming in others Mature; (Wednesday and Thursday, Vancouver East) Cocoons The Return Sequel to Cocoon, where friendly aliens return to Earth. Steve eut- tenberg, Don Ameche and Tahnee Welch reprise heir roles. Mature.

Granville, Oakridge, Coquit- lam, Park Tilford, West Van, Westminster Mall, Clearbroc Coming to America Eddie Murphy plays an African prince resettling in America. The story threadbare, and the tokes are flat. Mature. (Ends Sunday, Hollywood) Crocodile Dundee II That coarse, unsophisticated man from the outback returns for more adventure and low-brow yuks in big-city America and in Australia. Not as funny as his first outing.

Mature. (Starts Monday, Hollywood) A Cry in the Dark Australia's infamous "dingo case" brought to the screen. Meryl Streep and Sam Neill play Lindy and Michael Chamberlain, the Australian couple charged with murdering their infant daughter, who they claimed was killed by a wild dog. Top-flight performances; Mature. (Fine Arts, Station Square, Eagle Ridge) Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Comedy, made in the spirit of the 1940s, in which Steve Martin and Michael Caine play rival gigolos in the French Riviera who lay a winner-take-all wager on the affections of a rich American (Glenne Headly).

Mature. (Granville, Oakridge, Scott, Clearbrook, Coquitlam, Park Tilford, CO. Station Square) Ernest Saves Christmas Rubber-faced Ernest P. Worrell (Jim Varney) returns for his second comedy, this time with a Yuletide theme. General.

(Capitol, Station Square, Eagle Ridge, Willowbrook) A Fish Called Wanda John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline and Michael Palin star in this British farce. Kline gives a clinic in comic acting, Palin and Cleese are very funny, and Curtis electrifies every scene she's in. Fourteen years. (Vancouver Centre, Guildford) Fresh Horses Molly Ringwald is a fetching. farmgirl who seduces wealthy student Andrew McCarthy in this romantic drama.

Mature. (Royal Centre) Lair ot fhe White Worm Campy horror from flamboyant British director Ken Russell, which involves a secret snake-worshipping society. Amanda Donohue has a lot of fun as a sexy snake-woman. Restricted. (Royal Centre) The Land Before Time Feature-length animation by Don Bluth (The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail), set in prehistoric times.

General. (Granville, Fraser, Coquitlam, Park Tilford, CO. Station. Square, Clearbrook) BULL smZZ. land BOfllfi THEMOB 9:35 ua.

ifVt a at a r. ttuUI Murder One Canadian thriller about brothers who go on a murder spree in the U.S. Restricted. Royal Centre) My Stepmother is an Alien Awful comedy in which a man (Dan Aykroyd) marries a woman from another galaxy (Kim Basinger). Jonlovitz also stars.

Why does Aykroyd keep taking these bad scripts? Mature. (Granville, Coquitlam, Park Tilford, West Van, Westminster Mall, Scott, Clearbrook) The Naked Gun Wild police farce from the makers of Police Squad. Leslie Nielsen has the lead role of Lt Frank Drebin, with Ricardo Montalban, George Kennedy and Pri-scilla Presley in supporting roles. Mature. (Plaza, Denman Place, Park Royal Richport, Lougheed Mall, Station Square, Eagle Ridge, Willowbrook) 1969 Drama about two teenagers (Robert Downey Kiefer Sutherland) who come of age during the turbulent '60s.
