But a wrist injury in May of this year to Penske driver Rick Mears has suddenly sped up Tracy's development. For the most part, it has been a development sprinkled with surprising successes, the catalyst being a confidence-boosting performance on the tight road circuit in Detroit on June 7.

In just his seventh ever IndyCar start, Tracy, subbing for Mears in the Penske Chevrolet V8B, qualified fourth and then led for 19 laps after a bold some might say dangerously foolish pass of Michael Andretti. Even though he has never lacked for a matter-of-fact confidence in his abilities, the aggressive and fearless Tracy saw it as a turning point. "I just got the feeling I belong," he says. "It was like 'I can run with these guys, I Belonging and being accepted, however, are two different things. A chagrined Andretti made a point of ing into prominence in 1990 by winning nine of 14 races in the American Racing Series (now Indy Lights), the farm league for the IndyCar World Series.

His big break came mid-way through the '91 season when ce signed on with the Penske team to test drive the cars for Mears and Emerson Fittipaldi. The experience has been invaluable. "Getting all the fundamentals down, that's such a key," says Tracy. "Getting the setup down, fine-tuning the car, doing long runs so that when I'm ready to run a full season with the team, I'll be in a position to win a championship instead of having to go through the trial of mistakes that people go through when they're doing their first year of racing at the IndyCar level. "We're trying to eliminate that out of the process with all the testing!" Just being around such seasoned veterans as Fittipaldi, a former IndyCar and world driving champion, and Mears, a three-time national champion, has also helped barely tolerated.

Though they may be permitted the occasional moment of glory, the old guard even the "young" old guard will invariably test their mettle. Try to intimidate them. Challenge their psyche. Make sure they don't get too big for their britches too soon. Such has been the case in the coming-out season of Paul Tracy, the precocious young Canadian poised on the brink of superstardom.

Tracy is the 23-year-old kid from Scarborough, the leadfoot with the cherubic face who has dared to run up the rear slicks of the likes of Michael Andretti and Al Unser Signed by the powerful Penske AVAILABLE AT MR. LUBE, INLAND KENWORTH, AUTOMARINE ELECTRIC AND MANY MORE lecturing Tracy after the race. "I wasn't intimidated," says Tracy. Then earlier this month in Michigan, when Tracy finished a strong second behind fellow Canadian Scott Goodyear on the two-mile oval, Unser Jr. also chewed out the youngster for what he thought was dangerous driving.

At the Toronto Molson Indy in July, Tracy was subjected to a more subtle intimidation tactic. He was sitting among the media, waiting for his turn at the podium after the first day of qualifying, when Michael Andretti, Bobby Rahal and Eddie Cheever were all quizzed about what, if any, changes they would make to the track. All three suggested they liked the track as it was. Tracy popped up to suggest a small change to the street circuit's back straightaway. Andretti and the others immediately threw cold water on the idea.

Andretti's tone was clear: Not your place, kid. But if Tracy has yet to win a public show of respect from the men he is trying to beat, he is winning it everywhere else. "Paul has achieved one of our team goals and that is to be competitive," said Penske team spokesman Dan Luginbuhl after Tracy ran a strong second to Michael Andretti for 30 laps in Toronto before being sidelined with gearbox problems. His second-place finish at Michigan on Aug. 2 came a year after an embarrassing crash on the same oval when he suffered a multiple fracture of his left leg.

The crash came on the third lap of a 250-lap race when he admittedly tried to push to the front tooauicklv. Front-running has come naturally to Tracy, the son of a construction company owner. He moved rapidly through racing's lower ranks, burst- immeasurably. "With some of the other young guys on the smaller teams, you're basically in there blind. You don't have any help.
