About a year ago, the long-running children's drama series wrapped up with the Degrassi High characters finally graduating from school. Before that, there'd been other Degrassi series set in junior high and public school.

The Canadian public had been devoted to this darling drama. It was gritty, it was depressing, but it was always honest. And how can you just let the truth run away? Shortly after New Year, the Degrassi gang returned in a two-hour movie about life in the summer between high school and university. And now, weeks later, the Degrassi actors are back in Degrassi Talks (tonight at 8:30 on Ch. 2).

This time, reality drama transforms into reality get them. Not a shy bunch. A typical-looking 14-year-old turns out to be an atypical teenaged mother, who explains: "Things happened and I was stuck with a baby for the rest of my life." Well, she's more ordinary than one might think. While the interviews roll along, the producers discreetly stick their factoids onscreen, silently, such as: "35,000 Canadian teenagers become pregnant per year" or "70 per cent of teen moms are single." It has the effect, like a typical Degrassi episode, of working in A non-judgmental way, In between a few mumbles and some "Yeah, like, well" mutterings is some real-life eloquence. The actors are: Amanda Stepto, ments of Degrassi Talks addresses a specific issue tonight's is sex, followed by alcohol, abuse, depression, drugs and sexuality.

The promo ads that have been running throughout the Olympics make it sound like a phone-in show: "A new series that lets you have your say Now it's your turn to talk." Not quite, but the crew travelled across Canada interviewing hundreds of young Canadians, "in schoolyards, shopping malls, beaches, bedrooms, dance halls and other teen hangouts" as the press release goes. Despite the celebrity cast, this is an effort that looks uncontfived. The actors stick microphones in klds's faces, ask for opinions, and HESTER RICHES Neil Hope, Rebecca Haines, Pat Mastroianni, Siluck Saysanasy and Stacie Mistysyn. Knowledge Network has a prime-time lineup of B.C. films tonight, including: The Art of John Koerner (7), a profile of an artist; Spils-bury's Coast a profile of the author and painter; and Gurdwara, House of the Guru (8), a documentary on the Sikh religion in Canada that portrays three rites at a Lower Mainland temple baptism, marriage and funeral, THEY'RE BACK: Degrassi kids talk to Canadian teens about current concerns Each of the six half-hour seg- MOVIES The ultimate in laughter Even with the exclamation mark, this isn't half bad! charged entertainment JOHN ARMSTRONG Vancouver Sun STOP! Starring Sylvester Stallone and Estelle Getty Scott 72, Clearbrook, Granville. Park Tilford, Richport and Station Square. 90-odd minutes of absolute crap and it shines (it's not supposed to) and you find yourself laughing at half the generally driving him to the point! jokes, maybe it's time for a transfer where putting that shiny gun in his to, oh, the sports pages, mouth is a pretty attractive idea. QUEEN ELIZABETH THEATRE Tickets: TICKETMASTER: 280-4444 title should be approached warily, if at all. Odd couple cop-buddy movies should be avoided wherever possible. In the last few years we've had American copRussian cop, suicidal copsoon-to-retire cop, cop and dog (three times), cop and criminal as unhappy partners this genre is the big-screen version of single TV dads. I mean, we've scraped the jar and there's no Miracle Whip left. So cop and mom? Stallone and ing.

After all, the jokes you don't laugh at are enough to send you under your seat in shame. It's a one-gag movie: Tough L.A. detective Joe Bomowski gets a visit from his over-protective ma, Tutti Bomowski from Newark, N.J. She proceeds to embarrass the hell out of him, showing baby pictures down at the precinct house, ironing his shorts, cleaning his oily old gun until Estelle Getty? This isn't rattling your knife on the glass, this is sucking the cardboard lid-liner. And it's not that bad.

Maybe it's the obverse of seeing the-movie-everybody-is-raving-about and going "What's the big deal?" working here. After all, Saddam Hussein has a better set of clippings than Stop! so when you're expecting wrecked one and the last half or the movie turns into an out-and-out cop movie with every cliche except the pony-tailed, designer-clothed drug dealer stuffed into it. (You all know the de rigueur chase scene where someone drives down the sidewalk at warp speed? They do it twice.) So forget that part Stallone shows real comedic ability (I'm serious) in the early, non-generic going you really cringe for this guy when mom goes to work on him. Getty, for her part, is the quintessential "You'll always be my little boy" mother and that works, too, for the most part. She fixes his apartment, she packs his lunches, she am 'iu'f BEAUTY ft THE BEAST: 6:45 Mats.
