"It's a place where you go to review, to encounter the unexpected, to break through walls that are obscuring the truth, to go back and deal with things in your past that you've blocked out" The series, which begins Friday the 13th (10 p.m.

on Ch. 5), is set in a retro-chic eatery perched on the edge of a ramshackle, fog-bound wharf. Each week, some lost soul wanders in for a bite, and the staff two zombies offer their customer a chance to change the course of his or her fate.

A pair of telegenic actors run the cafe -r Jack Coleman, as short-order cook Frank, and Lindsay Frost as waitress Fay. But the real star, at least to horror movie fans, is Robert Englund, who played scarfaced Freddy Krueger in Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street movies. Englund plays Blackie, the mysterious cafe owner who pulled Frank and Fay into the cafe moments after their deaths. Friday's premiere sets this all up, but the episode actually appeared in January when NBC ran an unusual "sneak preview" stunt. Viewers were teased for a few days with shots of Englund, but little more was told.

The preview did well enough in the U.S. ratings, edging out ABC's Civil for second place in the TV HIGHLIGHTS YTV Achievement Awards (YTV at 7:30 p.m.): There are many B.C, winners in the network's annual youth awards, taped last week in Ottawa with hosts Alan Thicke and Laurie Hibber d. Coleman and Frost are generic TV glamorpusses, and the show obviously influenced by the Twilight Zone should look cultish and grainy instead of sleek and glossy. Mainly, however, Craven went overboard in his effort to make the cafe seem weird. Doors swing open TV TIMES UPDATE 1 These programming changes were made by the networks after TV Times went to press. The time sequence is jumbled so the whole plot ends up seeming arbitrary, not suspenseftil. Another potential pitfall is Craven's desire to change the tone of the series from week to week, with episodes of comedy and drama rather than strictly thrills and chills. This will certainly alienate the Elm Street fans, but Craven says "we're really setting out to do something that has a much broader appeal than the relatively narrow audience of horror. "Even in films, I'm always walking a tightrope part of the audience wants total mayhem instant terror and blood and guts and gore, a real nihilistic you know, there's an audience that's crying out for that. "In Nightmare Cafe, the intention is to do something that's a little scary but always intriguing, surprising, engaging and exciting to watch." the delegates from the Vancouver Juried Art Show who are advancing to the B.C.
