A self-propelled heavy-duty grinder was developed to reduce noise, but grinding was done between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., angering residents. Computer failure occurred occasionally during the early months of operation. On Jan. 25, the system was shut down for Vz hours, causing long lineups at the downtown stations as 40,000 tractor pull fans streamed out of B.C.

In March, residents living along the guideway in Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster formed a group called Homeowners for Action on SkyTrain Effects, which registered complaints about noise, invasion of privacy, shadowing and reduced property values. On April 1, the single-zone fare was hiked to $1.15 from $1. Fare increases implemented by the Vancouver Regional Transit Commission ranged from 15 to 25 per cent, leaving passengers paying 193-per-cent more than they did in March 1984. Howls of public outrage came from transit non-users over a 231-per-cent increase in the transit levy on B.C.

Hydro bills, which was raised to $5.30 from $1.60 a month effective April As a protest measure, 45,000 of Hydro's 462,000 Lower Mainland customers withheld payment of the levy, forcing the commission on Aug. 29 to roll the levy back to $1.60, retroactive to July 1. When Expo 86 began in May, SkyTrain was strained by fairgoers, with three-block-long lineups in the morning at the New Westminster terminus and 45-minute waits at the Main Street station in the evening. But SkyTrain engineers developed new computer software to handle what transit officials called "rush hour all day," carrying up to passengers a day the figure includes the free Expo shuttle between the Canada pavilion and the False Creek site. The anticipated annual use of SkyTrain was set at 25 million, but that figure was surpassed Nov.

Transit released its financial statements for the year ending March 31, 1986, showing phase one of SkyTrain cost taxpayers $1,015,960,000, including interest roughly $47 million per kilometre for the 21.4 kilometres from Vancouver to New Westminster. line near ine zwi a veuue siauuu.

Two men were later charged and officials insisted drivers would not be added to computer-controlled trains, but promises were made to step up security. The first complaints about SkyTrain noise came from residents on Jan. 10, when levels of up to 79 decibels were measured by the city's environmental health department, exceeding the 74-decibel level promised by the system's manufacturer. Noise levels up to 86 decibels were recorded by the city's environmental health department during the summer after a washboard effect deve- mm ON 'WONDERBRA PLAYTEX, 'DAISYFRESH', WARNER'S' AND 'VOGUE' DURING THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF BARGAINS Ir 7fv? lxp SAP SAiusiif? miM mm saus i ft SAEJS143W 73 lJlLaLa 4gg? iai EZ Mum Style 2530.
