lie said no government permit is necessary for the power potential survey, apart from his permission to go on the land. A member of Williston's department said the minister gave Iskut Pulpower Ltd. permission in l'Jfri to begin its studies. Williston said he understands Brinco is interested in supplying power in the area "because there are many mining properties showing potential." A mines department official said that the Galore Creek and Scud River areas feature a large copper deposit considered to be 100 million tons of close to one per cent copper. He said Stikine Copper Lid.

has been most active In exploring the area and that once the Stewart-Cassiar road is completed there is a 28-mile gap In the Iskut area still unfinished it is expected that a road will be built from the Stewart-Cassiar down to mining properties in this area. However, the mines official said access to the mining properties is a problem and that Japanese interests have indicated they are considering going into a venture whicli would involve building a smelter in the Slikine-Inskut area to process local ore. Williston said his government is prepared to allow private enterprise to produce power there for its own industrial purposes Eight men accused in an al-l leged marriage-of-convenience scheme appeared at a prelira- uiary hearing Tuesday In pro- vincial court. They are charged with con- spiracy to obtain landed im- migrant status for a number of East Indian men by mak- ing false or misleading state- menfsin connection with their applications for admission to 1 Canada. The Crown alleges that the men attempted to obtain land- ed immigrant status by going through a form of marriage with Canadian citizens, some ot whom were female irnper-i sonators.

Charged are Davinder Singh Mann, Narotam Singh Dha- noa, Manjit Singh Bal, Dar- shan Singh Narwal, Devmder Singh Kali Rai, Arjan Singh Mahal and Karnail Singh Bhandal, all Indians of the Punjabi region, and Anton Pauls. Pauls, of 2530 Campbell, Ab- bats ford, has been identified I as commissioner of marriages in Abbotsford. The Crown alleges that most of the marriages were performed at or near Vancou- ver between Nov. 1, 1970, and I March 31, 1971. Those alleged to have ap- plied for admission to Canada are Dhanoa, Bal, Narwal, Kali Rai, Mahal, Bhandal and Surjit Singh Grewal.

At the beginning1 of the pre- ternary hearing, Judge Gor- rion Johnson granted the peti tion for the fuur defence lawyers, representing the eight accused, that no testimony appear in the news media during the proceedings. Crown prosecutor S. Stolte of the department of justice said the hearing might take only three days, although, seven days have been reserved. Twenty witnesses will be called, including six persons named in the Crown's information as having been involved in the conspiracy. These persons are Gary Phillips, also known as Leigh Phillips and also known as rend a Marguerite Mary Glauser; Raymond Edward Kavanaugh also known as Christine Kavanaugh; Roderick Gordon Marshall also known as Sandy Miles also known as Yvonne llill; Rene Morian also known as Kena Tate also known as Rene Morian; David John Miller also known as Shelly Lynn Carolle, and Gary Trottier also known as Joanne Trottier.

Stolte said that six other conspiracy trials are scheduled in connection with the purported marriages, but he hopes to consolidate five of them into one. About 40 persons are involved The accused are either in custody, free on their own recognizance, or on bail ranging up to $3,500. When the first alleged violations of the Immigration Act came to light, police investigators said possibly 300 persons could be involved. AFTER CRASH Car hits pedestrians, four hurt One of two cars that collided downtown Wednesday afternoon plowed into a crowd of pedestrians and sent four to hospital. Mrs.

Elsie Terhume, 58, of 172 East Sixty-second, was the most seriously hurt. She now is in fairly good condition in St. Paul's Hospital with internal injuries and a fractured hip. The three other pedestrians were treated in St. Paul's and Vancouver General hospitals and were released.

Police said the driver of one of the cars fled the scene of the accident on foot but a suspect was later arrested. Charged with leaving the scene of an accident is Richard Robert Mochinski, 21, of no fixed address. He was to appear in provincial court today. Police said a car eastbound on Hastings shortly before 4 p.m. was making a left turn on to Seymour when it was in collision with a westbound car driven by Nicolaos Vavaris, of 396 East Twenty-ninth.

Vavaris' car swerved into the northwest corner where a number of pedestrians were waiting to cross the intersection. Others injured in the mishap were Mrs. Patricia Ril-cof, 24, of 518 Granville, Richmond, shock and bruises; Mrs. Anne Eye, 51, of 1549 Charles, injured left leg, and Michael Bodnar, 69, of Maple Ridge, injured left knee. 2 BOYS FACE FIRE CHARGE Fire department investigators say they intend to charge two 12-year-old toys in connection with last Sunday's $175,000 fire that destroyed a warehouse at 950 Southwest Marine. The two boys, officials say, are alleged to have entered the building and set fire to papers and cardboard on tha second floor. They will be dealt With by juvenile authorities. MARKET Continued from page 1 months sooner than planned July 1, 1977. Actual amounts of Britain's financial contributions to the Common Market budget are to be discussed at the June session.

The proposed formula calls for an annual British payment, beginning In 1973, based on British collections of import duties and on Britain's gross national product in comparison with those of the other Common Market countries. For the first years Britain would get a rebate that would grow smaller each year until 1979, when it would be paying its full share. Dutch experts estimated the British would pay about seven per cent of the budget or $280 million in 1973, and about 26 per cent in 1979. They declined to predict the size of the budget that far off. Britain's Rippon said the Common Market members had come a long way to meet British requirements, much farther than he bad hoped for.

"The dialogue of the deaf is over," he said. The progress made in the negotiations indicated that the chief obstacle now to British membership in the Common Market is opposition from the British public. velopment on the Iskut and Stikine Rivers. Willock declined to say how much Brinco had paid for control of Pulpower. Neither could he give more details about Brinco's ambitions for the Iskut development beyond what was stated by company president W. D. Mullholland in the company's 1970 annual report This said: "Recently your company concluded an agreement which will enable us to acquire a majority interest in a company formed to undertake an investigation of the hydro-electric potential in the Iskut-Stikine area of B.C.

"Accordingly, as an initial step, a field program is being planned for this summer as part of a study of the feasibility of an industrially related power development "This would be an Important step in opening up a remote region to development of its extensive natural resources." The phrase "industrially related" presumably refers to major mining companies who have also investigated the mineral wealth of the area. Some have spent millions proving up rich deposits of copper and molybdenum but development has been delayed by lack of power and transportation. In Victoria, Resources Minister Ray Williston said the government is not taking part in the study for potential power development on the Iskut. But he said any results must be made available to the B.C. Energy Board which now is studying the over-ail power ALSO CLEARING: PANTSUITS, SKIRTS, SLACKS, RAINCOATS, SCARVES, HATS, RIDING KIT, ETC.

Sereth testified his suspicions were aroused when he learned the pearls were packed in bags and not in original hanks, the normal packaging for imported pearls.

He said Chard told him that his father had accumulated them over a period of years. Sereth said he regarded it as inconceivable to have such a private collection of pearls. Vancouver police constable Roger Hostin testified he was in Screth's outer office during the meeting between Sereth, Chard and Chambers. Sgt. Gerald Young of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police testified he went to Chambers' office in April, 1970, with a search warrant to seize a file in connection with the Chard case.

SEATTLE (AP) A Vancouver, B.C., pearl expert told a U.S. district court jury Wednesday he was suspicious almost immediately of Harry Emery Chard's offer to sell him 600 pounds of pearls for about one-third their value. Arthur Sereth, president of Serelh Industries of Vancouver, said he contacted Canadian authorities after the offer was relayed to him by Vancouver lawyer Martin Chambers and that officers were present when Chard came to his office. He said the 15 pearls Chard gave him, apparently as a sample, were turned over to the police hnmediately after Chard left his office. Chard, 31, of Bothell, is accused of possessing and transporting to Canada pearls stolen in a Dec.

It now appears certain that the playing site will be shifted to another spot on the UBC campus. The disputants will spend today looking at several possibilities. The Russians' reaction to the original playing room seems to stem in part from their unhappiness with Fischer's demand for a room with no spectators.

FIDE had granted this demand before the two players arrived in Vancouver, despite the Russians' protests. At one point Wednesday, Taimdanov was shown and immediately accepted as a site the education faculty auditorium. As a professional pianist, he said, he preferred to play chess also before large crowds. Winner of the match, if it ever gets started, will advance to the semi-finals of the challengers' round. Other matches scheduled to start today are between Denmark's Bent Larsen and East a y's Wolfgang Uhl-mann; West Germany's Robert Ilunbner and Russia's Tig-ran Petrosian, and Russians Viktor Korchnoi and Yefim Geller.

Kotov also said he would advise world champion Boris Spassky not to play in Vancouver this summer.

(Spassky is scheduled to play in the Canadian Open here in August and September.) The meeting with McGregor also included Max Euew, former world champion and now president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE); BoJdar Kazic, FIDE official from Yugoslavia, and match referee; and CCF representatives Elod Macskasy and George Bryant, both of Vancouver.
