He came off victorious in the world's tournament held at London in 1851, defeating Howard Staunton, who was supposed to be, at that time, the chess champion of the world.

In his prime he was unquestionably the peer of any living chess-player except Paul Morphy, the American prodigy, who defeated him in a match at Paris in December, 1858. Subsequently, in 1S62, he carried off the highest prize a second London tournament. Of all the men whom Morphy encountered to contest the palm of superiority, none were so generous in their reception of the boy player as the noble German professor, Mr. Anderssen. While some of the European players were disposed to sneer at the boy's pretensions, Professor Anderssen, from the first, took the proper measure of him, and by constant practice and by studying Morphy's style of glay, prepared to meet him.
