TWO LOWER Mainland students were among the 15 winners in YTV's Achievement Awards ceremony that was broadcast from the National Arts Centre Theatre on April 22. The annual event honors young innovators, achievers and heroes.

Sweeping the writing category award was Nicholas Woo, a Grade 6 student at Sheffield school in Abbotsford. Nicholas is an avid writer who produced his first book, More and More Potato Chips, when he was seven. After receiving a Prism Award it was published and enjoys steady sales. Vancouver student Andrew Wong, 16, captured YTV's Achievement Award in the visual arts category. Andrew is a talented artist who has already received numerous awards for his work.

Both Nicholas and Andrew will appear on YTV's Canada's Best in the fall. This month Savvy will feature interviews with both winners and a sample of their works. hard-noseo ftnot Harlan Sto-evision is extreme 1 ISW1 r.Pttina EARTH WORKER Neal Graham, 17, of Sackville, N.S., is committed to making Earth a cleaner and greener place to live. For his outstanding efforts he received YTV's Achievement Award in the environmental category. Neal has encouraged environmental consciousness and activity in his school and community.

On his recommendations, the citizens of Lower Sackville have successfully begun composting on a regular basis. As a member of the Millwood high school environmental tee he assisted in hosting the first province-wide student environmental conference in 1990. Now, the Student Provincial Environmental Conference represents 90 per cent of Nova Scotia high schools. On an international level Neal plays a major role in linking the provincial conference network with the Caretakers of the Environment conference. He travelled to Sweden in March 1992 to look into that country's environmental efforts.

Paris and New York fashion designers picked up on the fad and now sportswear companies are trying to capitalize on it Jimmy'Z, a California-based sportswear company best known for popularizing the surf look, is introducing a grunge line for guys this spring called Street Smart'Z.

The outfits feature sleeveless flannel shirts, hooded jerseys and long, loose-fitting shorts. Want to win a free trip to the Commonwealth Games in Victoria on Aug. 18 to 28, 1994? An art project to mark next year's games invites students age 10 to 18 years to enter poster-size works on the theme: My Favorite Sport. The preferred media are water-colors or pastels but students can enter other works. The required size is 420 by 297 millimetres.

Each artist may submit only one painting. Twelve entries will be selected. The winners will be invited to attend the Commonwealth Games with all travel and living expenses paid. Their posters will be included in the 1994 Commonwealth calendar featuring young people's art. One poster will be selected as the 1994 Commonwealth Day poster.
