(CP)-Residents of this Crow's Nest Pass area coal mining town were without any heat for two hours in subzero weather following a fire which destroyed the boiler room of the West Canadien Greenhill mine. The boiler room served as a central heating plant for schools. homes and a business block in the Rocky mountain town. With the normal heat supply cut off by the fire, residents turned on electrical appliances to heat their homes and the overload blew the main fuses.

Electricians worked two hours in the bitter cold to make repairs. No accurate estimate of damage done by the fire has been made but it was, expected to run into hundreds thousands of dollars. The ruins of the boiler room are sheathed in ice up to a foot thick. A temporary boiler is being installed to provide heat for buildings. Meanwhile, families without heat in their homes are being sheltered by neighbors.

The fire forced a closure of mine operations, idling 350 men. Mine officials said no date has been set for re-opening the mine. Blairmore is about 100 miles southwest of Calgary.
