Thunderbirds and Simon Fraser University Clansmen is a bit like calling a CFL game these days.

There are too many intangibles. T-Birds, who claim the all-time series lead, should be the favorites. They took the lead by winning last year's game 25-16, and have won the past four matches (1988, '87, '82, '81) for a 6-5-1 record. This year's T-Birds also have more game experience than the Clansmen. First they defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 18-9 in the home opener last week, then dropped a 58-35 decision in Calgary to the Dinosaurs on Sunday.

The T-Bird offence has clicked well in the first two games, with running back Jim Stewart contributing two touchdowns in Calgary and 28 carries for 180 yards against the Golden Bears. Quarterback Doug Lynch is second in passing in the Canada West division. "Our offensive line has been doing a job," says Stewart, the current Canada West rushing leader and player-of-the-week for the 18-9 wiji. And we showed we could sure pass the ball in the last game." No kidding. The Calgary loss yielded a UBC record for total yards offense (1,268 for 93 points), with UBC tallying 595 yards by itself.

But UBC has lost the "backbone" of last year's offence. Jordan Gagner, the 1987 Outstanding College Player and all-time UBC passing leader, left football recently after turning down a designated backup role with the Calgary Stampeders. Mike Bellefontaine, who doubled as place kickerpunter and receiver, has cracked the B.C. Lions' roster as backup slot. And top running back Matt Pearce'is property of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

But that's not the only reason UBC coach Frank Smith is approaching the Clansmen carefully. "It's going to be really tough, because they've got an explosive and multi-talented offence," says Smith, adding that SFU running backs Sean Millington (1,043 yards last year) and Dana Pemberton, and wide receiver Nick Mazzoli (nine touchdowns) will require extra coverage. Add an arm injury to UBC's third-year defensive back Dean Heffring, and the T-Birds' frustration at switching to American rules football for the third Shrum Bowl in a row, and Saturday's result is not such an easy call. "That's kind of confusing for us, having to adjust our game like that," says Smith, noting the last two Shrum Bowls have accommodated the four-down game of the Clansmen, who play in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

The T-Birds, members of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union, enjoyed Canadian rules in the last Shrum Bowl series from 1978-82. Just how important is this game? "This is the game," says Stewart "If we lose this game and win everything else including the Vanier Cup (SFU) can still say we're second best." Caravatta agrees "There's no question, if we win this game it will give us tremendous momentum." he says. That appears to be the only question to be answered Saturday afternoon in the 60th running of the Jack Diamond Futurity at Exhibition Park. And Peter Gregory, who trains both double stakes-winning colts for R.J. and Lois Bennett, says he isn't even sure which one is superior.

But he fully expects to join one of them in the winner's circle following the G'rfurlong dash that carries a guaranteed purse 125,000. "It will be the first time they've run against each other," Gregory said Thursday. "In the back of my mind I have a favorite, but it doesn't matter to me which one wins." Sunrise Flight captured the B.C. Stallion and B.C. Nursery stakes.

The son of Wronsky-Swallows Rocket will be shooting for his fifth win in succession in his sixth lifetime start. Lively Lord will enter the fray following buck-to-buck wins in the Blue Boy and New Westminster slakes. The son of Lord Chilly-Youthful Luster has won two of four career outings. Alan Cuthbertson, who has ridden both colts to all of their victories, will direct Sunrise Flight from post position eight. Lively Lord, with Larry Lacoursiere looking for his fourth consecutive Futurity triumph, will break from the three hole.

"Alan and Larry are probably the best 2-year-old riders here," said Gregory. "And there's quite a rivalry between them right now." Lollipop Lorie, the Harold Bar-roby trainee which has captured three fillies stakes under Chris Loseth, drew the seven hole when entries were taken yesterday. The balance of the field will be: Golden Pursuit (Sid Martin, trainer-Gerry Olguin, rider), Rocky's Man (Frank Barroby-Brian Johnson). Devil's Risk (Ken O'Connell-Sam Krasner), Pagan Luck (Daryl Snow-Del Rycroft), Warwag (Maurice Doyle-Ruben Solis), Diamond Summit (Nand Sail-Mark Walker) and Sneem (Stephen Byrne-no rider named). Gregory's pair will be strictly the ones to beat.

But lie says he feels no pressure. "You put your own pressure on yourself." he said. "I certainly don't feel any pressure from the Bennetts. They are not difficult to deal with." Musslmn I 1 0 0 0 1 Machado 1 0 0 0 1 2 PB-Lyons. 1:40.
