Leading 2-1 after three tests and needing only a drew to clinch the series, England completed its first innings by adding another 58 runs to reach 420 and then restricted New Zealand to 135 for seven in reply. The day's play left New Zealand seeking another 85 runs to avoid following on directly in its second innings.

The visitors now require a miracle to avoid defeat and will be hard pressed to salvage a face-saving draw. Beat The Bell Loselh Ill By The Canadian Press Sunny's Halo, a three-year-old Canadian-owned colt whose star has faded, and John Henry, an 18-year-old gelding whose star is fixed, will race this weekend in the Jerome Handicap and Budweiser Million, respectively.

Sunny's Halo, who has lost three straight races including finishing fourth in the Preakness since his victory in the iy4-mile Kentucky Derby May 7, was entered against nine other three-year-olds in the one-mile Jerome. The colt, owned by David Foster of Toronto, has been plagued by physical problems, but looked good in his last start when he finished third against older horses in the lVa-mile Whitney July 30. John Henry, the richest thoroughbred in history, will face 13 rivals in the W-mile Budweiser Million on the grass at Arlington Park. John Henry, who won the race in 1981, didn't start this year until July 4 because of a pulled muscle. The horse won the lyi-mile American Handicap on the grass at Hollywood Park, his 32nd victory in 70 starts.

He has earned $3,706,297. The gelding will be ridden by Chris McCarron. Bill Shoemaker, 52, the win-ningest jockey in history and who rode John Henry to victory in the race two years ago, will ride The Wonder. Be My Native will be ridden by Lester Piggott, 47, the great English rider, and My Nobel Player will be ridden by Steve Cauthen, the Kentucky jockey who went to England to ride.
