The Ottawa Journal 21 Hobin fillies sweep Monday, Aug. 11, 1975 Stamps aren't needed this time i Jk fPm'M 'Li McCormick gave the young pacers perfect miles. Leaving from the No. hole with Trubesta Hanover, McCormick got away second behind But Saturday night at Rideau Carleton Ray Hobin, a man who has tried his hand at standardbred racing for close to the past 10 years, struck a blow for area owners. Hobin won both divisions of the Canadian Series for two-year-old filly pacers with Trubesta Hanover and Irva Hanover, trained and driven by Jim McCormick.

Gem Ma Mie, trained by Dr. Don Plouffe, won a Quebec Grcuit division for two-year-old fillies for one of the few local successes this year atConnaught. Last year Steve Scharf won with Paul Bye Pat in an OSS leg at RCR and at Connaught Flip-p a Yankee and Yankee LiiJji jtemiM-ttftiWaiiillilMa' iff ft' iiiT 'uT I 1 i to step into the winner's circle Saturday night at Rideau-Carleton Raceway. With McCormick are Ray Hobin's two-year-old pacing filly Hanover and a member of Rideau's administrative staff, Debbie Leonard, who plants a congratulatory peck on McCormick's cheek. McCormick won both divisions of the Canadian Series.

(By Armand Legault-CP). Calgary and Lethbridge 1 Mirage won for Ottawa area owners. However, both Rideau racing director Terry and Connaught's Tommy Gorman labelled Saturday's sweep of the fourth leg of the Canadian Series the most successful outing for an area owner at a local track. They won't need any postage stamps to make sure Hobin receives his cheques for $2,487 and $2,513, for he's a regular fixture around the Gloucester plant. The Stitts-ville owner has had pacers and trotters, for some time now, but this year is the first he has ever got a filly to the races.

And now he just might have the best two-year-old fillies in Ontario Railbirds could think only of the OSS-staked Daisy who could challenge Hobin's pair. Hobin is a man who doesn't believe in paying the big dollar for yearlings, because "people talking" and they "expect things." He shelled out $9,500 for Trubesta at Harrisburg and $8,500 for Irva. "I'm just lucky that's all," said Hobin. If Hobin is lucky, he's lucky to have the services of McCormick. The Arnprior native has always had a reputation for a way with two-year-olds and Saturday he played the part of the confident, self-assured driver as well.

Nepean sweeps series Nepeaii Lumbermen Yvon Plouffe and First Strike and ahead of favored Sky's The Limit as the field raced to the quarter in 29 4-5 and hit the half in 1.03 1-5. Sky's The Limit left the rail just past the half, but McCormick was just as quick to bypass First Strike heading into the back strtech. From there it was a foot race and Hobin's Best of All daughter, broken by Dan Talbot, won by two lengths over Dancer Lane and Carmen Hie. Trubesta made the final half in 1.00 4-S for a 2.04 mile and a new lifetime mark. And also it's, the-first-time.

the. filly has appeared to be fleeter afoot than her rival Irva. McCormick left quickly with Irva Hanover in the second division and was on top, ahead of challenger Jovial G. Benign Hanover sat second most of the way through a 29 4-5 first quarter, but it was obvious no one could catch the Steady Star, filly. Journal Sports Staff Stake races have spread like a flash fire over the past few years in the Ottawa area. The Ontario Sires, Loto Per-fecta, Quebec Circuit, Canadian Juvenile Circuit the list goes on and on. Yet each time the leg of the stake series made a stopover at Conn aught Park or Rideau Carleton Raceway the winner's share of the large pot usually accompanied the pacers and trotters, with the strange sounding names, back to their faraway places.

At Conhaught the majority of successful steeds came from Montreal and at RCR they all hailed from western Ontario, the London area hotbed. Rideau SATURDAY FIRST Trot, purst $700. 2 Ray Freehall (A. St. Amour) 14.30.
