12 Sundays p.m. BALTIMORE (IP) The recent deaths of two cardinals and the mandatory retirements of yet two more presents Pope John Paul with an opportunity to put his personal stamp on the U.S. Catholic Church. The deaths of Humberto Cardinal Medeiros of Boston and Terence Cardinal Cooke of New York have left two major archdioceses without leaders. Timothy Cardinal Manning of Los Angeles reaches the retirement age of 75 next year, and John Cardinal Krol of Philadelphia turns 75 in 1985.

Nelliee 4 Auec. D. Irene 4 M. Frenela KiFW4 A aimvmsn aWR C0NNAUGHT HEIGHTS PENTECOSTAL ASSEMBLY 2201 Stk New Wettmlnater 326-3303 y-evident doctrinal of the Polish Pope, U.S. church liberals are a little gloomy about the prospects.

They may be wrong. It imt In many cases, of course, the bishops discovered, or rediscovered, their fundamental doctrinal conservatism after the Pope made his strong views known. Even Bishop Stafford, always a careful moderate, acknowledged he once believed an optional married clergy should be permitted, but had returned to a deeper understanding of the "maturing witness" of the celibate priesthood. Nevertheless, whatever the U.S. bishops' reputation, they are not a group likely to rock the papal boat on Catholic doctrine.

Where their reputation for liberalism may be justified is on social and political issues such as racial discrimination, public welfare, government measures to deal with the economy and with unemployment, and nuclear disarmament. And here, perhaps ironically, is where the charismatic John Paul seems in harmony with the younger U.S. bishops. It is well known, for example, that the pontiff gave prior approval to the U.S. Catholic hierarchy's controversial pastoral letter condemning the use of nuclear weapons.

The man through whom this approval was given comes closer to symbolizing the U.S. cardinal of the future than anyone else. He is the diplomatic Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago, John Paul's choice to succeed the secretive and autocratic John Cardinal Cody, as head of the biggest of all the U.S. archdioceses. Cardinal Bernardin is conceded to be in the new mold of liberal Catholic churchmen, and he indisputably holds the unofficial title of leader of the U.S.

hierarchy. Mentioned as a possible successor to either Cardinal Cooke or Cardinal Medeiros is the Most Rev. John Roach, the archbishop of St. Paul and 9:45 a.m. Sunday Bible School for everyone 1 1 a.m.
