BEST COPY SPORTS 09 The Vancouver Sun, Tuesday, July 26, 1994 AVAILABLE FIGURE SKATING Eisler, Brasseur say goodbye to amateur skating SOCCER Lenarduzzi puts up his feet after a month in 'hot seat' DAN STINSON Canadian Press the points I was making. But I didn't want to become something that I wasnt I didn't want the show biz part over entirely. just a question of making a little more forcefully television audience. Lenarduzzi now serves as an 86ers director and plans to take in the team's remaining home games at understood the general terms of what was required, but I was concerned about the time factors. "I can be fairly long-winded when I'm discussing the game, but television doesn't allow you to go on and on. I had to discipline myself to make my points in a very short and concise fashion. "But I can honestly say that I enjoyed every minute of it." Lenarduzzi says the first two weeks of USA '94 were the most difficult.

With three and sometimes four games per day in the early rounds, he put in 12-hour-plus shifts that frequently included appearances on Dave Hodge's Inside Sports program following the day's matches. "I'd get to the studio at 10 in the morning and there were some days when I didn't leave until 11:30 at night," he says. "It might seem like a bit of a grind, but the TSN support staff was just superb. They did excellent homework on all of the 24 teams and laid everything out in easy-to-read booklet form. "Basically, my job was to look for the key players in each game and comment on their performances." Lenarduzzi says his biggest concern was coming across as insincere on the tube.

"I was told by the show's executive director to have a little more energy, to get a little more excited about Vancouver Sun After a month on the "hot seat" as a TSN World Cup analyst, Bob Lenarduzzi intends to put his feet up, briefly, and take in the game of soccer strictly from a spectator's point of view. "I'm going to enjoy a brief respite from direct involvement in the game," Canada's national and Olympic teams head coach says. "It's going to be nice to sit back, watch the game as a spectator, and not be second-guessed on everything I say or do." This is a well-deserved 'down time for Lenarduzzi. The national team programs are in limbo until next spring and he no longer coaches the Vancouver 86ers, a job he held from the club's first Canadian Soccer League season in 1987 until its elimination in the American Professional Soccer League playoffs last September. Lenarduzzi provided analysis and color commentary for TSN during the World Cup.

It was a first-time experience for the 39-year-old Vancouver native, who watched each of the tournament's 52 games in a Toronto studio with host Vic Rauter and fellow analyst Dick Howard. "I wasn't sure going into it what to expect," Lenarduzzi admits. "I I i Ail ill Swangard Stadium. He watched the 86ers lose 2-1 in overtime to the Los Angeles Salsa last Friday. "I'm loath to comment because I know only too well what it's like to be second-guessed as a coach," he says.

"I know that head coach Carl Valentine is introducing a new style of play this year and, frankly, I didn't see too much wrong with it last Friday. "Basically, he wants the guys to play the ball along the ground and that can be a very entertaining style of soccer when it works. Unfortunately, it's not so pretty when it breaks down. "But I definitely don't want to be seen as second-guessing Carl. It's his team now." Sun files TORONTO Eight years ago, the thought of skating with Lloyd Eisler brought tears of despair to the eyes of Isabelle Brasseur.

'On Monday, with Brasseur by his side, an emotional Eisler fought back tears with the announcement that he and Brasseur, Canada's top figure skating pair, were retiring as amateurs to turn pro together. The move ends a hugely successful amateur career that includes one world championship, three world silver medals, two Olympic bronze and four national titles. "We know this is the right time," Eisler said Monday. "We wanted to move on to something else, to see if we can achieve at the professional level like we did as amateurs. will be fun, difficult and challenging." is how both skaters remember the situation when they were first asked to skate together in 1987.

"Eisler, from Seaforth, Ont, had been through three partners and had been retired for six months when he reluctantly went to Montreal to skate with Brasseur for the first time. He thought she was too small at and 96 pounds, and she thought he was too big at 5' 180-pounds. cried for two weeks straight because I didn't want to skate with him," said Brasseur, a native of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. "I thought he was too big and he would throw me all over the place. "But my parents told me it was just for two days and if I didn't want to skate with him I didn't have to." It didn't take long for the two to realize there was great potential.

"I was out of shape, but after three hours we could do things that other pairs couldn't," said Eisler. "All that was left then was for me to move down to Montreal." The pair realized their potential in 1993 when they captured gold at the world championships in Prague. Both skaters agree that gold medal was the highlight of their career. They cited the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France, where they collected a bronze, as one of the low points in their career because they didn't skate well; 1 BOB LENARDUZZI: will keep a low profile while watching 86ers Salsa lose nine points awarded for win over defunct Houston GOODWILL GAMES Mitchell joins elite circle of sprinters Los Angeles'Salsa will lose the nine points it was awarded for a 0 American Professional Soccer League victory over the Houston Force on July 14, APSL official Steve Winter said Monday. The Houston franchise was revoked by the league last week following an internal ownership dispute.

Houston's only game was against Los Angeles. "We're treating it as an exhibition game," Winter said from APSL headquarters in Washington. "The points Los Angeles earned will be withdrawn and a new schedule will be drawn up by league to replace the games involving Houston." Los Angeles currently leads the APSL standings with a 4-2 record and 31 points. The Salsa drops to third place with the deduction of the points. Vancouver 86ers were scheduled to play Houston Aug.

12 at Swangard Stadium and Sept. 12 in the Texas city. Winter said both games will be rescheduled by the league against yet-to-be-determined opponents. "We hope to have the revised schedule out later this week," he said. The APSL is reduced to seven teams with Houston's withdrawal.

The 86ers' Saturday road game against Seattle Sounders has been moved from the Kingdome to the Tacoma Dome (7:35 p.m. kickoff). The Kingdome is temporarily closed to all events because tiles fell from the ceiling of the stadium last week. The 86ers play host to the two-time defending champion Colorado Foxes Wednesday night at Swangard. Kick-off is 7:35.

-DANSTINSON Associated Press ST. PETERSBURG Dennis Mitchell has been one of those forgotten sprinters, an afterthought behind Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell and Linford Christie. Not any longer. Mitchell should finally get the recognition he craves after beating Burrell, Lewis and a star-studded field to win the 100 metres Monday at the Goodwill Games. Mitchell led from start to finish to win in 10.07 seconds and capture his first gold medal in a major international championship.

Is he now the world's best sprinter? "I want to live up to the tradition of a cocky sprinter and say, 'I Mitchell said. While track and field grabbed the spotlight on the third day of the 16-day event, the U.S. men's basketball team rebounded from its loss to the Russians to reach the medal round with a 99-80 victory over China. And in beach volleyball, U.S. teams advanced to Wednesday's finals in both the men's and women's events.

Two Canadians also competed and one came away with a medal. Judoka Nicolas Gill of Montreal won a bronze in the 86-kilogram competition while Graeme Fell of Vancouver was fourth in the steeplechase. In was on the track at Petrovsky Stadium where the day's biggest drama unfolded. Four of the six fastest sprinters in history Mitchell, Lewis, Burrell and Andre Cason went head-to-head in the most anticipated race of the year. Mitchell wasn't even invited to the Goodwill Games in the first place, overlooked in favor of the bigger names.

But when Christie, Britain's world and Olympic champion, withdrew last week with a hamstring injury, organizers needed a replacement and turned to Mitchell. 1 440 AUCTIONS ifciiniiiMMMniMa July 26, 1 p.m. (Baby Shop, Carpet 1339 Kingsway, July 26, 6:30 p.m. Abbotsford Auctions (Regular General Auction) 3467 McCallum Road, Abbotsford, B.C. 440 AUCTIONS Tyldesley Auction Store, Printing Press) Vancouver, B.C.
