Died. Benjamin F. Smiley, an old and highly respected citiien of the town ol Lancas ter, died at his home about two miles east of Bowmanarille, on Friday, March 30th, after a long illness, aged 63 years, a montns and days. Ms was a brother ot Mr. George H.

On Wednesday, April 19, special services were held in the Presbyterian Church before an unusually large congregation, as a funeral tribute to the murdered president. The bell waa tolled; the interior was draped, the- Ajnericnn fla ft being wreathed with the sables behind the pulpit! and the pastor preached an on the 3TtH the remaiha of Lincoln passed our town by apecial train on the Erie Road, and lay in state at the St. James in Buffalo, where thousands came to view them and later in the day ca me the news that J. Wilkes Booth, the assassin, had been overtaken and killed near Fredericksburg, Va, All these things kept our people for a time at lever teat. Before dropping the subject of the war, I will just mention, that a poor old horse, belonging to H.

P. Campbell, and afflicted with some painful maljdy, wjas lumea out ny nis owner to was, on July 3, 1873, despatched with pistol bullet by the friendly hand ot the writer. The earn is mentioned only for the claim which was confidently made made by Mr. Campbell, and believed by many of our cititens, that this was the very horse which the rebel general, Lee, rode at the time when be surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House. In the late autumn preceding the dose of the civil war there was committed in this village a startling crime which may as well be recorded at this point as at any other.

It was the murder ot the widow of John L. Lewis, about two o'clock on the morning ot Sunday, Nov. 6, 18G4. Mr. Lewis a short time previously had died in a fit of melancholy by his own hand.

He was reputed to be wealthy, and in his house (that which ia now occupied by Mr.Philip Watts) there waa a sale. A burglar placed a ladder at the west end ot the house and entered the chamber window. Descending to begin operations upon the safe be awoke the inmates, and Mrs. Lewis began to scream, at which be shot her. Later he was arrested for another crime, snd was hanged at Geneeeo under the" pseudonym of Wilson.

Previous to his death he confessed the Lancaster murder. (to roxTTxrin.) Lancaster Co-Operative Work.
