High School PASSAJC COUNTY THE RECORD, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31. 1985 D-9 Cur cum sisters lead Mahwah to state title NJSIAA tennis summaries WEST WINDSOR For the Mahwah High School girls tennis team, winning the New Jersey State Inter-scholastic Athletic Association Group ltitle was an all-day affair. Yesterday morning, the T-Birds made short work of Metuchen winning, 4-1, behind the play of the Cur-curu sisters. At first singles, Robin Curcuru defeated Sherry Pancer, 6-1, 6-1. Her sister, Kim, then defeated Rita Pugliece, 6-1, 6-0, at second singles.

"Robin and Kim got us off to a good start, and the rest of the players just followed suit," said Mahwah coach Dennis O'Connor last night. "I was very pleased with the overall play, but we were only half way there and there was still more tennis to be played." Other semifinal winners included, the doubles teams of Leda Dunn and Laurie French, and Theresa Russo and Bryn Mclnnis. In the state final, the Curcuru sisters struck again as Mahwah swept past Haddonfield, 5-0. But the match was not as one-sided as the score might indicate. "We were pushed to the limit the last three matches, but my players never let down," said O'Connor.

"My girls are a confident, strong group and no matter what the score is they can come back." In singles, Robin and Kim Curcuru picked up straight-set victories and van and Michele Moylan (R) def. The Maroons were facing the team most observers consider the best in the state. NJSIAA singles semifinalists Cindy Greenberg and Carina Rolley sparked West Orange with straight-set victories over Karin Hyman and Cybele Eidenschenk, respectively.

Ridgewood's only victory came at second doubles, where Sandra Sullivan and Michele Moylan rallied for a 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Liz War-nick and Audrey Seligsohn. "You know they're going to win the whole thing, they are just incredible" Ridgewood coach Mary-ann Tierney said of West Orange. "We had a relatively young team, so I'm really happy with the kids. "It's fun to play a really good team. We learned so much from the Counties Bergen County tournament and that helped us get ready to play.

We learned from losing, we will use that experience when we play next year." Kathy Nukk held on for a three-set victory. Then, the T-Bird doubles teams took over to complete the sweep. Dunn and French defeated Liesl Henderson and Cathy Greene, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Mclnnis and Russo also went the distance, holding off the team of Para Geib and Denise Iavicoli, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (9-11), 6-4. "We accomplished everything we set out to do," said O'Connor.

"The long ride back home seems a lot shorter when you win." The trip home was much longer for the rest of the Bergen County teams competing in the NJSIAA girls tournament. In the Parochial A final, Red Bank Catholic routed Immaculate Heart Academy, 5-0. In Group 4, Ridge-wood knocked off East Brunswick, 4-1, in the semifinal round, but was beaten, 4-1, by highly regarded West Orange in the final. Clifton nearing volley ball title CLIFTON There's still a drought problem in New Jersey, but it has nothing to do with the water.

It's been eight years since the Clifton High School volleyball team has won the Northern New Jersy Interscholastic League Passaic-Essex title, but that may soon come to an end. 1 The Mustangs moved one step closer to their goal yesterday with a 15-5, 15-4 victory over Nutley in an NNJIL match. Clifton was led by Patty Kokawski's six consecutive serves in the final game, while Kris Kosz and afcaJL CARE-FREE CHECKING A personal checking account with a built-in line of credit AMERICAN EXPRESS GOLD CARD Charge card convenience, with a credit line and check-cashing Christa Breen had five kills each in the match. "It's just really incrediable how well we've been playing," said Mustangs' coach Terry Cagna. "We've made tremendous progress since the beginning of the year and I'm very pleased." Clifton has a chance to clinch the title with a victory over Belleville tomorrow.

"It's been a long time coming, but i we'v been working very hard and this team takes nothing for grant-; ed," Cagna said. 1 Clifton has improved from an 11 11 team of a year ago, to a current record of 15-2. Cagna attributes the improvement to two sophomores, Kosz and Olga Zielonka, and junior Christa Breen. I "They have brought back the. speed and aggressiveness that this team was lacking," Cagna said.

"The blend of youth with experience has made this team one to reckon with. But clinching the title is the first on our minds." I In the Bergen-Passaic Scholastic League, Julie Spreen had 10 serves Heather Englehardt had six spikes as Hawthorne defeated Mahwah, 15-7, 15-4, in a King Division match. While continuing to teach at PCT, Corsetto became an assistant coach, first under Mark Corino at Bloom-field College in 1983-84 and then under Jim Catalano last year at NJIT.

"It was an unusual feeling, working for somebody else," he said. "I wanted to coach in college, but sure, I missed being a head coach." Corsetto says he has been up-front in his dealings with Neumann Prep officials. "I want to return to college coaching eventually," he said. "I'm not promising I'll stay at Neumann Prep after this year, but I'm not promising I'll leave either." He will continue studying for his masters degree in administration and supervision at William Paterson where Corsetto had also hoped to coach basketball this year. Former Seton Hall coach Hoddy Ma-hon was hired instead.

"It was tough when I didn't get it," he said. "The type of kid they get there is the city kid, the type of kid I dealt with at Passaic Tech. I felt I could continue the fine job that John Adams did, because we have similar coaching philosophies." At about that time, Corsetto learned that coach Joe Hess was leaving Neumann Prep. He had a pipeline at his disposal, since his nephew, Robbie Corsetto, is a senior on the Wildcat team. Ron Fox Staff Writer Rich Corsetto, who coached Passaic County Tech's boys basketball 'teams to a 201-63 record in 11 years, has been hired to coach at Neumann Prep.

Corsetto was an assistant on the college level the last two years. "It's a small school that hasn't won many games," he said by phone last night from his home in Wayne. "It's a challenge, but I'm ready to take it on. It'll be different because I coached city kids at Tech, and this will be more of a suburban group." Corsetto seems to thrive on challenges. After starring at St.

Bona-venture's High School in Paterson, he led the nation's junior college players with a 38.2 scoring average at Hartford JC in Belair, Md. The 6-foot-3 guard scored 1,295 points at Southern Mississippi, a total that ranks sixth on the school's all-time list, before being drafted and cut by the Pittsburgh Condors of the American Basketball Association. I He did not serve the usual apprenticeship as an assistant coach, moving directly from college to head coach at Passaic Tech, where five straight losing seasons had preceded him. No Corsetto team finished un-dei .500. Corsetto began with a 15-10 season and later won divisional titles all eight years his teams played in the Bufgen-Passaic Scholastic League.
