S-14 THE RECORD, SUNDAY, JUNE 16, 1965 Tri IIIUII IIUI I. i 1 k- Uth 1 '41 jj 4 us.r event in the Wyckoff Triathlon. swimmers spiasn into ranKlin Lake to take part in the first t. v. a II I the competitors board bicycles rousing of Winchester, Va.

Esrey entered last year's event on the recommendation of a friend in Wyckoff, and he returned again this year. Ironically, Esrey was not awarded his first-place trophy in the 50-55 age category for his impressive time of 1:37.29 because a typographical error had him listed as 31 years old. For the most part, the computerized system worked extremely well, and there were few complaints. Jeff Jasper, the athletic director and girls basketball coach at Pas-cack Valley High School, celebrated his 40th birthday with a sixth-place finish in the 40-44 age group with a time of 1:41.02. Another girls basketball coach, Bob Cavo of Rutherford, finished in 1:48.35, a minute better than his time of last year.

Jodi and Jeanine Porro, two of Ca-vo's players, were on hand to root on their coach, who vowed to get the sisters to try the triathlon next year. Both Porros frowned on the idea. Melissa Crabtree of Ridgewood placed first (1:47:17) in the 19-and- for Wyckoff event is I I Following a half-mile swim, almost 700 entrants. Joan Fahey finished in 1:35.41 to take first place among the women, with Janice Bender of Grahamsville, N.Y., second and Carol Wikfors of Palisades Park third Blomberg, 24, competed in his first triathlon last August and said he expected to finish around the 1:40 mark yesterday. He held a slight lead over Richard Hauptschein of Wysox, after the swim, and kept that advantage throug the rest of the race.

Hauptschein finished 12th. "I've been swimming since I was eight, and I took up running in high school," said Blomberg, a graduate of Ramapo College. "Lately I've been pretty good on the bicycle, too, but I wasn't really expecting to win." This was the first triathlon victory for Blomberg, who plans to enter the U.S. Triathlon Series June 30 in Baltimore. "I've been in 29 triathlons, and four Boston Marathons, and this has been one of the best-run events I've seen," said 51-year-old Jack Esrey jii i iim XtiZ'' til I A -jii.

Bo Esrey, son of Jack Esrey, won the men's 19-and-under followed by Steve Ferry of Westwood. The Oakland husband-and-wife team of Charles Worischeck, 56, and Kathryn Worischeck, 54, also completed the course yesterday.

Former Manchester Regional track star Pierre LeTennier was the first person to cross the finish line. LeTennier joined John Eriksson and Storm Lefelar to win the relay event. Former Olympic cyclist Jackie Simes teamed with Rick Oelkers and Patrick Oelkers to win first prize in the family competition in 1:21:47.3, second overall behind LeTennier's team. Tony Garro, 43, of Tenafly, was 23rd overall, and finished more than four minutes ahead of his nearest competitor in the 40-44 age group. The oldest finisher was 65-year-old Ed Dewey of Brooklyn, whose time of 2:18.04 was better than more than 50 finishers.

The Manchester-High School senior was the first person to cross the finish line. Prep discus record By John Brennan Correspondent FRANKLIN LAKES The awards ceremony at yesterday's Wyckoff Triathlon lasted as long as each of the three events, but that seemed appropriate, considering the task just completed by the 500 athletes who finished the combined swimming, cycling, and running competition. Larry Blomberg of Pequannock captured two of the more than 50 trophies awarded, one for winning the overall individual title and one for winning his age group (20-24). Blomberg finished the course a half-mile swim in Franklin Lake, followed by a 15-mile bicycle ride, and a five-mile run through Franklin Lakes Boro in a time of 1 hour 24 minutes 37.9 seconds.

Blomberg was followed by Keith Mazurek of West Orange Doug Piche of Ringwood and Robert Vendetti of Caldwell (1:27.17) among the men.
